But poor Gracie, she gets insult to injury. On p.17 she is called Ashley Wagner ... :laugh:

She has such a gorgeous slim and athletic body, good height and quick rotation on her jumps, but somehow she just can't stay on her feet. I love watching her and always wonder what's her problem.
Technique? Problem with inner ear balance aparatus? Psychological matters? :scratch2:

I saw some observations in the Skate Canada thread that Evgenia appeared slower than some of the other competitors, including Liza. I understand of course that there are different ways of generating and maintaining speed, some more difficult and impressive than others, but I was always under the impression that out of the top women, Liza is not particularly fast so that surprised me! (This is not meant to disparage her; I like Liza a lot! :)) Since things like ice coverage and speed are not always immediately apparent or easy to compare on video, I wondered if anyone here who has seen the Russian women live had an assessment of their relative speeds (and/or overall skating skills)?
 
Medvedeva was never that fast, in terms of skating skills and speed

Pogorilaya, Sotnikova, Tsurskaya, Gubanova and Radionova are the fastest with good skating skills.

I remember back in 2013 the biggest complaint lodged against Zhenya was how slow she appeared. TBH I only notice it when she lands her jumps and then transitions directly out of them. I think she just has a fairly long set up into jumps and then uses up a lot of momentum to rotate causing a noticeable decrease in speed. It's one of the reasons I've been so critical of her spread eagles out of jumps. It's hard to get on a nice curve and use quality edgework when going slow. Just my observation though.

and maintaining speed does not disrupt the look on the programs and gives better flow, amongst the juniors I have high hopes for Tsurskaya - very good speed, edges and skating skills and Gubanova - Sotnikova level skating skills (*but needs to fix her jump technique).
 
As far as i remember Evgenia started to slow down her SP when they have backloaded the program, in fact in the long program she is usually a bit faster.

But hey she was beautiful yesterday! :love:

I never understood fascination with linear speed in figure skating, let alone equating speed with skating skills. This is not short track. In figure skating how you accelerate, the visible effortlessness, being able to conceal acceleration in steps and turns are much more important than maximum speed.

Seriously, this girl is special. You may discuss Averbukh's idea and taste, but now that she put her heart into it, with this beautiful costume on and white boots, with that final look of those amazing teary eyes, you just got to give it to her. Striking performance. :love:
 
Great start for Evgenia!

4th place for Liza, little disappointing, she has to win in China. (looking at the lineup she can, but it will be tough)
