2016-17 State of Russian Ladies skating

Today was a show in Moscow:

Sotskova presented a new EX. I enjoy her skating even more now - so much grace! But boy, she is so tall!

Yulia is in a very good shape - much better than she looked last September. There is just a piece of her EX - people say she did one clean 3T. If her jumps are truly back I hope she storms SA. She is as good as never before now!

Adelina, alas, seems to be out of shape both physically and mentally. I am sort of close to stop my denial: it looks like she will be never back.

That's unfortunate for Adelina. :( I'm having flashbacks to Sarah Hughes after her Olympic win.

Killer spread eagle, though.

1. After watching this and her training clips from latest Sharov's interview, I'm no longer rolling my eyes at people predicting Sotskova pulling off a "Med", "Rad" or "Lip" in her first competitive season. It gets tougher with every year, but may happen - the girl is clearly in form.

2. You wonderful, tough, ambitious girl, Julia Lipnitskaya. How on mother earth did you manage to get into such shape? :reye:
I hope you can jump those 3-3s. Because if you can... :)

3. My short personal rant on Adelina Sotnikova: I might have some sight problems or am completely ignorant regarding athleticism in figure skating, otherwise I can't understand why this girl is not progressing. She has monster vertical leap, great naturally sporty body and innate musicality. Few pounds less should not be problem for top skater, used to sacrifices and tough regime through her whole life, supported by beloved coach, best CSKA staff and facilities. It have to be either motivational problems or she deliberately went on with her life, keeping that fact to herself.

Anyway, good luck dear ladies! :cheer2:

It's probably a motivational issue with Sotnikova. She has already won the biggest prize out their (regardless of whether people disagree with the result). When you get that type of prize and get the rewards that come with it, not so easy to surrender yourself over to the hardcore training. This is likely on of the reasons you don't generally see repeat OGM in figure skating.

Adelina did one clean 3T too and skated very well. I see that you just want to see the return of Yulia than Adelina. How did you know that Yulia became better than ever before? I didn't see it in this video from the show. Let's see what happens in the season, and then we'll talk.

Except....is Adelina competing? Where? I'd love to see it but she's skipping the GP for the second straight season isn't she.

FWIW: I think most people want to see both do well.

She didn't skip it entirely last year - she did do Rostelecom.

How'd I forget. She said she didn't want to do GPF, not the season. :bang:

I can't find a full video of her at Magic On Ice. Anyone seen it?

ETA........
Found one.....

I have only one question. Why the break in the middle of the song? Was that to give the guitar solo dude his moment?

I suspect Adelina is not training as intensely as she would have been prior to her Olympic win. And really, why would she? Her career as a skater is extremely different now from what it was three years ago. She's not doing any GPs, she's getting tons of invites to perform in shows, she's basically a national hero. So naturally she's not going to be "in shape"; and by "in shape", of course I refer to the fitness level needed to be an elite competitive athlete.

I feel bad for her because I often wonder if she's just trying to prove the naysayers wrong instead of doing what she truly wants to do with her skating career. With all the negativity she's dealt with since winning Olympic gold at 17, its honestly amazing that she hasn't had a complete mental breakdown. Testament to how strong she really is, I think.

I was there yesterday. Adelina fell hard from the first jump (2A). She was really in bad shape.
She skated at high speed but this is due to a lot of running steps

The songs were too long. The perfomances by VM and TM also were breaken. It was strange. Nothing happened.

At least she skated with speed. On videos of earlier performances, she looked slow too =(

Well, in general, I´m sad about Ade. She is a gorgeous skater, and i´m sad she doesn´t look like she is coming back. She wasnt a model of consistency prior to Olympics, but she could rock when she was on. Now her jumps seem always off.
Considering the depth of russian field currently, I dont think she stands a chance, unless she has the mental strength of Yuko Kavaguti, for example.

There are quite a lot of skaters who won medals in more than one Olympics. Besides Adelina never won a World medal - that should have been a great motivation. I recall Adelina actually saying herself shortly after Sochi that she would want to win everything there to win...
I think it is more to do with what I call a curse of a 'chance' OGM, same happened to Sarah.

Adelina -> at this point i don't even know if Buyanova still cares about her. She needs to recover quickly doing a lot of challenge events like Golden Spin, Cup of Nice,... if she wants to get a medal at RN. (but likely she won't)

Yulia is always a question mark: Will she get back on track at SA? Unlikely, at this point we need the old yulia of the 2013-2014 season because she doesn't have a reputation anymore (her ranking position is low now) and at least in the US she will face some big names like Ashley, Gracie and Mao.

I think she could get a medal at the Rostelecom Cup but she will need the gold if she places 4th at SA.

Masha is on form: i feel her artistry is improving under buyanova's coaching and she worked with Rafael Arutunyan's staff in the past so she has a solid foundation.

Since Adelina is skipping the GP, I'd not expect her to do any Senior Bs at this early time period either - what's the point? If her goal is Russian Nationals, then doing a Senior B closer in time to that - some time in December - would be the more likely option.

Considering her current form, she should do all training and competing she could get if she wants to stand a chance.
Russian Fed supported her, but i don´t think they will for a long time, because they got so many talented skaters and they will dump her as soon as its clear other have more medal potential in the next Olympics.

Russian Nationals is in three months. If she isn't doing any competition of any significance - i e the GP - any time soon, then what matter her current shape? What good would it do her to be in peak condition now? The question really is, will she be able to work herself into shape come December? Or is it her intention to sit out this whole season? Has she said anything at all about her plans?

I may be Yulia uber at times but I always supported Adelina saying that there were just haters who started to say she would never compete again internationally right after Sochi. Adelina skated beautifully last season but her jumps were not there. Yulia was out of shape as well. Now I see Yulia poised, confident and I would say "muscled" quite unlike last season's test skate when she was hmmmm.... somewhat overwheight. Adelina, well, it is good that she nailed a 3T. But her axel which is shown on the video is plain scary and it looks like she gained some kilos which is hardly the good news. Hope I am wrong and she will show all the sceptics what she is worth this season.
