2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

and don;t forget Nic:) and Nam :)

Unless Nic's recovery picks up suddenly, I don't see him placing in the top 5.:(

Nic just got 64.0 with a 26.75 TES for his SP in Zagreb, which puts him in 13th place going into the FS. No quad. Popped his 3a, doubled his lutz in the 3Lz-3T combo......lost his chance to make minimum TES for either 4CC or Worlds....

Nam....we'll have to see....really don't want to see him lose national team status. But Elladj with on average more consistent and beautifully skated, but quadless programs this season may outskate him if Elladj can leave his nationals stress demons behind.

When was the last time we had 7 men in CAN to talk about as possible World Team members!

Kaetlyn..... Wow 75.54 SP...her SB, and a clean program that had all the naysayers quiet, and many stunned by her incredibly HUGE jumps!

:points:

And a :dev2: to CBC for not only having a lousy, freeze every 5 second stream from IN available on replay, but also for failing to notice how incredible it is to have a Canadian women sitting second after the SP, and ahead of 3 of the Russian prodigies!

Uhm, not sure why it took so long, but rewatching Virtue/Moir's SD, I just realized that from now through Worlds, every new international season's best is another world record....
:yes2:

I just wanted to say I just watched Kaetlyn's short program at Marselles, and I am very happy for Kaetlyn Osmond. Thank goodness she doesn't have to resort to tanoes and backloading to get that score, ha! well deserved. A mature, sophisticated, and powerful skate.

I'm surprised that everyone had issues with the CBC feed. I watched all the events and didn't have it freeze at all.

Thank you!!! I agree 100%. I know that Tano's are difficult and I'll never blame Med for the huge numbers she garners because she is able to execute them well under pressure. She definitely earns her big numbers. However, as an older fan, I have to say that I prefer kaetlyn's sophisticated and "Showgirl" like, style of skating. I hope they both skate perfectly in the free, and I would REALLY love to see Kaetlyn skate light's out and take this event. Hopefully she doesn't feel the pressure but, she and Patrick have become the hope for the all North American Fans. At least when it comes to singles. Go Kaetlyn....:cheer2:

mmrice, you are a much better person than I to give hopscotch girl that much credit, haha. That's why you are the most awesomest person on this board, and I am not :) I agree with you, it would be a change and wonderful to see a Canadian lady skater on the podium. I'd LOVE TO SEE HER TAKE IT ALL THE WAY! **evil grin** **cheering way down south of the border here in Texas** hahahahaha.

i just thought that was especially nice of you to say this mrrice. On this forum, we often feel excluded or belittled... small country... but getting support from fans south of the big great north, is appreciated... maybe you shouldn't move to canada after all :) we need you in the USA :) to send us some support :)

ETA my thanks apply to you as well Topaz

Here's Skate Canada's press release at the end of the second day of the GPF...

https://skatecanada.ca/2016/12/duhamel-and-radford-win-bronze-world-record-for-virtue-and-moir/

And here's the CBC story http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/figureskating/duhamel-radford-bronze-1.3890083

Maybe I'm being to much of a "glass half empty" on the coverage, but to me the story should be along the lines of

"Canada continues to show its strength in ice dance, pairs and men's disciplines, and is Kaetlyn Osmond is poised to make a breakthrough for Canada in ladies."

Or perhaps everyone is holding back to avoid putting too much of the pressure of our hopes on Kaetlyn. She's already shown again and again that she is the one to break the ceiling...Perhaps it's time to give her our maximum energy...

:cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer: .........

Perhaps TGee...I was surprised even reading PJ's Kwong's twitter today and the lack of reference re Kaetlyn, but mentions of both Med and Pogo. Hmm, didn't Kaetlyn set a new Canadian SP record last evening, and isn't PJ reporting for CBC on this trip? BTW, lots of umm, ...updates on Hanyu and Pooh bear, as I am sure all were losing sleep. :scratch2:

Perhaps PJ should check out the beach like the ISU members have.

Who thinks osmond can stay on the podium?! Ahh so anxious!
And yes why isn't she getting much media coverage? That may also be a good thing though.

Golden Spin 2016 Canadian men's results update...

Keegan Messing - 223.30, ended up with a bronze....I believe that it is his first Challenge podium finish!...:hap57:

Roman Sadowsky -217.94, finished 6th.... and with a FS TES of 68.28, he now has the senior TES minimums for 4CC and Worlds...Good showing for his first senior international outing. :agree:

Nicholas Nadeau - 193.75, finished 11th, but there were withdrawals after the SP...:(

Overall, this event achieved what we had all hoped in giving more Canadian seniors international competition experience.

So sorry that Nic is not sufficiently recovered to be competitive at his potential at this point. Hope that he and his coaching team can take the positive lessons from Kaetlyn Osmond and Kevin Reynolds in terms of a long horizon vision for recovery....

Nadeau didn't get the TES minimums for Worlds, but he did get them for 4CC. If he wants to go to JW, he would have to go to a Junior event and get those TES minimums.

Thanks...Somehow I thought he'd missed the minimum SP TES for 4CC, but see now his 26.75 is greater than the 25.0 requirement..

And good point about the Junior Worlds...I do think that it could be a good option if he isn't recovered enough for a strong senior placement at nationals.

Either way, there are ISU international events remaining early in the New Year. Perhaps his province may be willing to fund it. I believe that he has an athletic bursary from Quebec.

Absolutely don't want to start a cross thread discussion, but do want to observe that there is something darn odd about how Canadians don't seem to expect much from our women in singles...

I was grumbling about the lack of attention to Kaetlyn Osmond in CBC's coverage this weekend below. And now we see that US commentators have given her more attention, at least in terms of tweets and observations, than Canadian ones.

No one can argue that ladies has been the discipline where Canada has relatively underperformed, and that given the large numbers of girls that take up skating, we have not made the most of our female talent pool. But does that mean that there isn't a sports story to be told ...???
