2016 Team Challenge Cup - Gen Info/Pre-chat

Omg the difference between So Youn and Rika was only around 10k the last time I checked, and now it's 50k. OMG!

This fan voting thing doesn't seem to be working out. Next time they should just have the "Captain's pick" be someone picked by the captain. The rule would be that the Captain's pick would have to be from a different country than the other two team members. (Team North America would most likely have a couple of Mexican skaters, or maybe Peurto Rican.) IMHO this would make a cooler and more representative competition, even if some skaters were stronger than others.

I look forward the most to ice dance. Weaver & Poje and Chock& Bates versus Papadakis & Cizeron and Cappellini & Lanotte.

I just went to look at updates and saw that Liam Firrus has "WD" from the voting.....so I'm not sure if that means that it'll only be between Max and Adam for the voting.

Re Liam:

It still is possible to vote for Liam. I have done so myself (after the "Withdrawn" notation was added), and it is easy to see that his vote count continues to go up and up.

The "Withdrawn" notation was added on Friday, very soon after the announcement from Skate Canada that Liam "decided" to withdraw from Worlds.

IMO, it's not clear exactly what the "Withdrawn" notation means. It could mean that Liam was deemed ineligible for TCC b/c of his withdrawal from Worlds. Which is not the same thing as Liam voluntarily withdrawing from the TCC voting.

Sadly, I do think that the TCC slot would not be given to Liam, even if he were to win the voting. (At the moment, it is looking unlikely that he will win the voting. But I am pleased that he was and is getting a more than respectable number of votes, both before and after his withdrawal from Worlds. I hope he is aware that fans from many countries are voting for him.)

Unrelated comment:

Don't want to jinx Boyang, but I am loving the prospect of Shoma and he having a chance to bond as fellow members of Team Asia. Perfect opportunity for a nice bromance. IIRC, they both have said previously that they would like to become better friends?

This fan voting thing doesn't seem to be working out. ....

I know you're talking about other issues ... but on a shallower level, it bugs me that the legend for color coding of the maps is wrong for the North American men. The legend says that green = Liam and purple = Adam, when the actual coloring of the maps is the other way around. :bang:

OK, but seriously. Who put up the "withdrawn" sign without saying what it means, whether you can still vote for him, whether your vote will count if you do, and whether he will skate if elected?

I am going to write to Kristi and tell her to assert her authority as Team captain to straighten this all out! (Me and Kristi go way back. I have an autographed copy of Dream Big, Little Pig.)

At this point, I envy you. Honestly, I'm more interested in seeing the Captains, not the current skaters from WTC. That doesn't mean I don't love the current skaters, but we can see them in competition during the season, but the Captains are not except few ice shows.

i am glad Angelina is winning, her skating is very enjoyable. Dont worry about Elena and Evgenia, they will be invited to events at Japan for sure.

More than 78% of worldwide votes for Misha Ge come from Japan. Would you call that a farce?

[Showing my work for MM ;) or anyone else:

When I looked a few min. ago, Misha had 46,114 votes total.

And he had 55% of Japan's 65,456 votes = 36,001 votes.

36,001/46,114 = 78%.]

Misha Ge is very popular in Japan so no, I don't think it's a farce.

Don't know (or care) about the ladies, but as for Misha: we've seen the other guys skate a million times. Not Misha, who can't catch a break this year (according to his Twitter, poor guy doesn't even have his SP costume two weeks before worlds:sad46:) And let's face it, Misha is the definition of a "fan favorite". His votes seem perfectly normal.

I think it would be a shame if a fan fest format (say that three times:laugh:) were abandoned due to theories, fears, suspicions and throwing shade.

yea, we all get to express our opinions, but I gave up on the X Files a long time ago.

Please stick to discussions about the Team Challenge Cup that is happening in April in Spokane.

I voted for Misha Ge. I haven't seen him skate yet this year and I've seen the others from Asia.

To be fair, there are some suspicious voting patterns within the US as well. For example, for the European ladies, most states have votes in the hundreds, and the votes are divided somewhat evenly among at least two of the skaters. However, the states with the most votes BY FAR are California, Nevada, and Illinois, and they have VERY uneven voting results.

In California (4899 votes), 81% of the votes are for Radionova and 15% for Medvedeva.
In Nevada (2450 votes), 99% of the votes are for Medvedeva (0% for the others).
In Illinois (1771 votes), 93% of the votes are for Medvedeva and 5% for Radionova.

I think the fan vote is a good idea, in principle, but maybe the organizers should do something to limit vote tampering. Maybe like requiring a working email address for each vote, or something... :slink:

Yeah, registering an account with a confirmation email would have been the bare minimum here, I think.

I took a look at the website's source code just now. Turns out you can pop-out each category and vote exclusively on those three skaters. Use your browsers private mode (Chrome incognito mode Shift+Ctrl+N) and you can vote unlimited times, takes me literally 1 second per vote.

The website only mentions 'automated voting' as being subject to deletion, so I suppose that means manual point-and-click is still within the rules, as long as an actual human being is spending their own time doing these things. Still, that's easily hundreds of votes within minutes, all manually achieved, within 3 quick mouse clicks.

I never enter my email in such things so I wouldnt vote at all if it was required:slink:

I think an emali registration would be a hurdle for a lot of casual skating fans (or family members of die-hard skating fans) to vote, but won't stop programms to automatically vote. Don't ask me how it exactly works, because I have no clue, but I know it's pretty easy to write/download a programms that will regerate new fake email accounts each time you vote.

I think adding an IP filter is sufficient, so that every normal person just can vote once. Then, right before the final count, delete the fishy looking votes...
or require people to vote per facebook/google/instagramm/twitter account.

But as sugarpova said, while I had tremendous fun voting and following the results, I would never register per email just to vote for this event. The point of the whole fan poll thing is to engage fans even casual ones, which is actually working out pretty well right now and wouldn't if an email registration was required.

I don't believe this fan vote is engaging any casual fans, nor is it working very well. The vote is just rehashing tired old arguments that are deeply entrenched in the small figure skating community. Two pages of this thread was deleted yesterday for that reason.

Registering with an email address isn't that big of deal. You had to do that to post here on GS. I can't think of many websites where I can do much of anything without registering in some way. You can use an alternate email address if you don't want to give your main one, I have a 'spam' email account and that's where most of my stuff goes. This would take less than a minute and wouldn't cost you anything. If the voting was as 'tremendous fun' for you as you say, I think you'd find a way to do it.

I doubt that an army of aggressive spammers with sophisticated bots would bombard the website with thousands of fake registrations/emails so they can vote on the TCC site. :sarcasm:

Actually, it is a big deal and a big restriction. I would never provide my email for something like an online poll, even one of my lesser important emails. I don't think I'm the only one who's careful with the information they provide on the internet. Not to mention it's a bother and it'd turn off the more casual fans completely.
