I don't believe this fan vote is engaging any casual fans, nor is it working very well. The vote is just rehashing tired old arguments that are deeply entrenched in the small figure skating community. Two pages of this thread was deleted yesterday for that reason.

Registering with an email address isn't that big of deal. You had to do that to post here on GS. I can't think of many websites where I can do much of anything without registering in some way. You can use an alternate email address if you don't want to give your main one, I have a 'spam' email account and that's where most of my stuff goes. This would take less than a minute and wouldn't cost you anything. If the voting was as 'tremendous fun' for you as you say, I think you'd find a way to do it.

I doubt that an army of aggressive spammers with sophisticated bots would bombard the website with thousands of fake registrations/emails so they can vote on the TCC site. :sarcasm:

I can only speak for myself, but as I said, while it was very fun to vote, I'd not register by email just to vote. Combining the voting meachanism with a facebook or even golden skate account would appeal to me much more.

The less fans vote, the more weight will even one 'aggressiv spammer bot' with basic programming skill have on the result and looking at the fierce voting agenda between certain countries I wouldn't rule that out. That's why I think that before the final count, to check on suspicious votes (like 500 votes in half an hour from one area) etc.

I don't think I'm the only one who's careful with the information they provide on the internet. Not to mention it's a bother and it'd turn off the more casual fans completely.

Email accounts are free and plentiful, and require no personal information beyond what you give them.

This is not a pointless 'online poll'. It's supposed to be an actual vote that provides real, tangible results. Whether an athlete goes to TCC or determining selections of skaters at the event shouldn't be hinged on a wide-open, anonymous system that can be easily abused by only a handful of button pushers with practically no effort.

Not sure why 'casual' fans keep being brought up. Only the truly dedicated ones will be influencing this vote. The few casual fans who vote once and move on, not so much.

I'm not sure how that would be revealing personal information. You wouldn't be writing the website a letter and signing your name at the bottom?

We already know the TCC site logs IPs (which are traceable directly to you), pinpoints your geographic location from your IP and reports this to all visitors, and puts cookies in your browser to store your choices and track your activity. That's far more invasive to me than giving them a generic email address that I don't use for personal business. YMMV I suppose.

And it certainly is not representative of how all Asians think in this day and age.

For example:

If a child has a non-Asian father (and surname) and an Asian mother, many Asians (including me) absolutely would not consider the child to be 100% non-Asian.

The child is half Asian.

Honestly, I don't trust facebook either but I would have no problem with voting with my Golden skate account, but since not everybody has one I added fb to my suggestion ...

Maybe just adding that thing, where you have to type 5 random letters and numbers to prove you're human would suffice before voting? That wouldn't require emails, accounts etc etc and may be even efficient against voting programms?

I know from a logical stanpoint an email is much less revealing then fb, cookies, IP etc. But still I wouldn't vote if I had to verify with my email ....

The Asians are not that stupid. Ann Patrice McDonough was born in Korea and adopted by the American McDonough family. She has no Scottish blood. She's a Korean American actually - Korean kid adopted by American family. Misha Ge's situation is different. He's not adopted and his father is Chinese Jun Ge. Both their names are totally Chinese.

Think about Patrick Chan. Is he Canadian? Yes. Is he Chinese? Yes. He's a Chinese descendant with Canadian citizenship. He's a Chinese Canadian. Chinese figure skating fans want him to go back to China to worship his ancestors because they believe this can bring him good luck.

Then there's Denis Ten. Is he Kazakh? Yes. Is he Korean? Yes. He's a Korean descendant with Kazakh citizenship. Korean audience cheers for him when he competes in Korea.

Name is not the only determining factor, but it's a very important factor and often gives you first impression. When you look at the names of Keara and Emma Hedican, you wouldn't know if they're half Japanese. But if you do some research and find out their mother is Kristi Yamaguchi, then yes you recognize they're half Japanese. But in Misha Ge's case, his name is Chinese, he speaks Chinese, and if you do some research, then you'll find his father is also Chinese with a Chinese name Jun Ge.

I think you confused what I meant. I never said he's not part of Korean. If someone is 15/16 Chinese and 1/16 Russian or French or whatever, he's still part of Russian or part of French.
