2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

I don't think the U.S. is in terrible shape--we're just waiting for Alysa Liu to become eligible.

But ...putting all eggs in one basket = part of the problem, no?

If the lessons of the recent past aren’t learned - quickly - expect more of the same. Uber-hype, underperformance, teardown, onto the next one.

We might get 2 spot for each 7 JGP. It really depends on Ting & Eunsoo. If Eunsoo ahead of Ting then S.Korea will get 2 spot each JGP. Russia and Japan will be top 2 country. S.Korea and USA battle for 3rd country

Eunsoo is surely better than any of our juniors.

EMMY is currently in 6th and there are 12+ girls left to go.

Looks like the US will only have 1 spot next year. Ugh.

Ting has to finish 12th or higher. I think that is doable. We will find out shortly.

ETA! And Ting did it! She scored a new personal best and finish in the top 10, keeping two spots for US ladies.

Great job Ting! I used to think of her as just a jumping bean but she really has lovely arms and a nice presence on the ice! Wishing her a bright future!

Awesome fight by Ting after the mistake! 7th isn't too shabby either and that's 2 spots for the U.S. next year! Great job Ting!

I have to go and check the scores, but I think this is the highest score from a US lady at JW since Gracie. Plus this was her first time at JW! Really outstanding job!

Congrats to Ting for her 7th place finish and 180 score! She's doing better than some senior ladies in the US. Really great jump technique and her Rippon tanos are as nice as Zagitova's!

She needs some polish for sure, but she's is one to watch. Anyone know if she's planning to stay junior for another season. She's 15, right?

So sorry that Emmy keeps under performing. I love to watch her though, she's got such a mature presentation. If she can get her confidence and jumps solid, she can rank high, as we saw with her JGP bronze. I don't want to see her become another Emily Chan (beautiful skating but can't land jumps).

If shes 15, USFS may encourage her to go senior. But if she stays in juniors, I could see her really doing well.

In any case, I think she has fantastic potential. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

Impressive free program by Ting and she managed to solve combo problem during it. Maybe 7th place is not looking good but US has really promising lady with good technic and nerves.

It may be a good idea to take the top 5 US juniors and give them 1-2 senior international competitions a piece as soon as they're eligible. Your top 5 skaters at nationals fxn as your anchors. Then you fill out your internationals (minus Worlds) with places 6-12 from nationals. I think the focus has been on placements in the competitions in the short term. The short term appearance is of poor placements, but I think the short term sacrifices (in terms of placements) will yield long term gains.

Well, I should have expanded on my thoughts a bit. I also think we have some potential to move up at the senior level and because U.S. skaters seem to develop more slowly and stick around than the Russians, we're not completely dependent on what's now in juniors. Also, my reference to Liu wasn't that she was the only bright hope, more that she's our actual Juniors champion--the best we currently have to offer at that level.

ETA: So, if Alysa and Ting had gone to Worlds--we'd have likely to have had two ladies in the top 10--which would have been a good showing.

I understand Andrews withdrawn and passed spot to Ma, but why didn't they pass it to Kalyan, who is the silver medalist at Jr. Nationals this year?

I wish Ting stayed in Junior for another season. Getting into JGPF and top 5 world finish would be nice! The current state of senior ladies is not so good but Ting with her inconsistency won't get her anywhere. She need the competition experience. Getting her few CS would be wise move from USFSA.

So who is the ladies that going to GP and JGP next season

Senior/GP: Bradie Tennell, Karen Chen, Mirai Nagasu (?), Starr Andrews, Polina(?), Ashley(?)

JGP: Ting Cui, Emmy Ma, Pooja Kalyan(?) , Kaitlyn Nguyen(?), Hanna Harell, another Hannah? I forgot her name.

idk many US junior though.

Polina is going to have a very difficult time getting on the GP. Her seasons best was very low and she has no WR points left. She’d have to compete for the SA spot, which will be competitive.

For juniors, I think it’s going to be interesting seeing who develops over the summer. Last year Ting and Hanna weren’t on the radar until the made an impresssion during the summer. Plus there are girls that are recovering from injury like Kaitlyn and Ashley Lin that I can’t dismiss. So this is my potential list for juniors.

Pooja Kalyan
Hanna Harrell
Ashley Lin
Ting Cui
Beverly Zhu
Emily Zhang

I think we may get a few extra spots from Germany and Chinese Taipei. They have to make their decision soon.

If Ting stays in junior, she definately be competitive with everyone that isn’t a Eteri lady. She’ll have to improve her consistency and spins. But from what I can see she has some amazing talent.

As for seniors, I think the list will be:

Bradie Tennell
Mirai Nagasu
Karen Chen
Mariah Bell
Angela Wang

Potentially Courtney Hicks as well

Starr is probably on the short list for SA. But like a Bradie, she has to earn it by scoring well over the summer. It’s possible that someone like Amber could have a break out season and take it as well.
