2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

When u get on the list, does that mean you're a Team USA member? How do u get kicked off the list?

Very curious.😀

Skater get on the list by scoring high and/or at a monitored competition. For instance, Alexia was put on the ISP at the US Challenge Skate in 2015. She was the only novice competing with triple triples at the time. The watched her during a practice session, looking closely at her jumps and spins and added her after she won that competition. The same for Ashley Kim who was added last year after scoring well at skate Detroit.

You get moved off the list for various reasons. If you can't attend nationals or have had a bad season as junior you can get pushed off the list. Skaters like Polina are still on the list because of her history and because she has a GP. They cut more slack to seniors than they do for juniors.

This is what I've observed over the years.

How old is Starr Andrews?? From what I understand she is planning to remain a junior. I remember seeing Sarah Hughes in 1999 and she was just a baby....I saw her in Finland and she still had braces and was...."Coltish." Is there a chance that Starr could make the Olympic Team?

She just turned 16 in June. She did a season as a domestic junior for only one year and has only two junior competitions. Point wise it wasn't good enough to get her on the GP. Juniors often stay junior internationally to gain more points and credentials before going senior. Yes it's possible that she could make the team. But the field is more competitive than when Polina made the team.

Is Starr planning to remain a Junior? When I saw Sarah in 1999, I think she was maybe.....13. I honestly don't remember but, she was very young and certainly younger than Starr is now. Here's Sarah performing at Worlds in 2000. You can here the commentator say that she is indeed just 14 years old. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30oMzkGPA9c

She's going to compete as a junior this year. She said in her interview that she would compete as a senior if USFS assigns her somewhere. For instance a challenger series or 4CC. She is an older junior, but she's the same age as Gracie when she won jr national and 2nd at jr worlds.

Does Gracie have a page that gives us updates? It appears that she is working hard on her fitness and that's great to hear. It's her jumps that have me worried. She was great in 2016 and I hope she can get back to that level.

No. She doesn't. Let's hope competes in a summer competition soon. Otherwise the first we'll see of her is probably the CS.

I believe that Gracie is also doing a Sun Valley show on August 26th (so maybe we'll see if she attempts any triples). I think that the photo from Gracie in Colorado was from when she was there a few weeks ago, she also had footage of her and Jason running up steps on her Instagram Live around that time.

It's great that she is working on her fitness, though I hope she also doesn't feel the need to "prove" to people that she is working out by posting these photos and videos, etc., because she doesn't owe people anything. Also, her problem last year didn't seem to be her fitness, and that seemed to have been more of an issue that crept up in the off season. Hopefully she is able to find joy in her new training environment and shut out all of the social media/etc. voices and skate for herself this season.

Well, she did say that it was an issue at the beginning of last season IIRC, because she'd felt she needed a bit of a break the last offseason to deal with her disappointment from Worlds. Though I don't think that was the main issue.

True, she also said last year that she was riding the bike more vs running a lot (compared to other seasons), etc. I guess that I should have phrased it differently. I don't recall seeing Gracie in the shape she was on SOI, where she wasn't attempting triples. It made me think that she had some sort of undisclosed injury going on.

But it's all speculation on my part, like most of the message board commentary is. In truth, we have no idea what is going on in a skater's life (both physical and mental) that contributes to their performances. I wish Gracie the best, it would be great to see a comeback.

I think Wagner, as the only U.S. lady in the past 10 years to land on the world podium and only U.S. lady in the past 14 years to land on the podium of the GPF (besides Alyssa Czisny) is essentially guaranteed an Olympic spot. I literally think she would have to place out of the Top 10 in both her GP events and at nationals for them not to give her a spot.

I think this is the post princessalica meant

Thanks SnowWhite......I think I've seen that hill before. I remember seeing Agnes Zawadski run that hill in a fluff piece. Gracie looks great in that picture. She looks happy and fit.

She'll have to earn the spot by skating great this season. I'd say she's been, overall, the #1 US woman this Olympic cycle. However, this past season was probably her worst since 2010-11. If that is foreshadowing a downward trend for the upcoming season, I don't think she will make it.

Ashley is a question mark for me .... even without getting underrotations in her sp at worlds last season, she still didn't hit the 70 mark.
The layback is no longer required, right? Maybe she can chuck that out completely, or put a layback feature in a combination spin?
I hope she starts doing the spread-eagle- into- triple-loop that she used to do years ago.
