Again, I don’t think the judges are sending Ashley any message other than rotate your jumps and have fewer crossovers in your programs. We have one data point to work with so far. Everyone is just projecting their own feelings (because they’re tired of Ashley, don’t like her, like others more, dislike her using an old program) onto the black box that is PCS.

Looking back at her program, I don't think the judges had it out for her. There are parts of the program in which she is dancing more than skating, notably before the 2A and between the 2A and the 3Lo. She also got a L4 on her final layback, which I think means she was given credit for an illusion entrance. That was a generous call, as her body remained almost parallel to the ice. She seems optimistic about the LP, and I am very excited to see her interpretation of that music. The program looks to offer her a chance to show off her artistic range in a way that her whimsical SP doesn't.

I haven't given up hope on a ladies medal. I think if we send Amber Glenn, have her change her programs to match Sotskova's, and then trick Maria into skating in Amber's place, there is a possibility of a medal.

Seriously, if there's a splatfest at top and Bradie skates clean, she could get a surprise bronze--it's the weirdness that is the Olympics after all. (Hello Sarah Hughes). Bradie does have the technical difficulty to get the scores.

I’m not sure one can pull out the race card when Mirai and Karen are so inconsistent and Ashley is the only world medalist/has been the fed standard-bearer for more than two quads now.

Maybe so, but it will come up. It did the last time, and there was a much better case for having her replace someone than there is now.

And sorry to the max fans on this forum, but he’s not going. Not unless he finishes top 2, which is unlikely. Adam and Jason’s PCS advantage on him is probably 15 points across both segments. And Adam is far more consistent. But that’s for another thread.

If Max beats Jason and/or Adam but they send Jason and/or Adam anyway, what's the purpose of even having the nationals? I am a Max fan, and if he has a good day, he should be the one going. He's very inconsistent, but once in a while he's inconsistent for good. I'll believe it when I see it, though. Most likely it will be the three guys in the GPF.

I know...it's bad. I'll show myself out now. But hey, if she wins tomorrow, who knows? Maybe this could be a marketing opportunity that's too good to ignore...lol. They are an official sponsor right?

If you have a Grand Prix Finale medal, you should be able to get to bump someone if you have a bad day. I agreed with the decision to put Ashley on the team 4 years ago. She was a medal contender (to some extent) then. If Nathan has a cold or pulls a muscle and skates badly this weekend or (God forbid) has to pull out, he should still be put on the team. Making the GPF isn't enough, so if Max and Vincent outskate Jason and Adam, they should be the other two men.

The "ladies" should be top 3. Period. Also, I believe that if they put Ashley on the team (again) over a better skating Asian, there will be serious charges of discrimination raised in the media or even a lawsuit.

Seriously? I mean, you have looked at the rest of the team, right? Nathan Chen, the ShibSibs, Madison Chock--all extremely likely to go.

Fifth in ranking, but in terms of points, Ashley, Mariah, Angela and Karen are all close to one another. Polina about two points below the cluster and Bradie and Mirai are within a point of one another, but with a five-point cushion.

In other words, lots of room for movement.

Also, the skaters in contention will be skating back to back this time, which will make it easier for the judges to keep their PCS consistent across top skaters. They didn’t have this luxury in the short.

OMG !!! so much for posting this! It's fabulous ... so much fun seeing them belt out and let go of the nationals tension/nerves.

So fun watching Ashley Cain, who performed full out every single time!

i think the only way she would be sent being out of the top three is if she's 4th and angela is 3rd. any lower and there's no way. i wouldn't necessarily refer to it as being "body of work" because that's slim pickins this season, but she knows how to compete under pressure and has a better international reputation. i just don't think angela has the necessary experience to be put on an olympic stage...she's never even competed at a world championship before and has only competed at 2 GP events her entire career, which were very low finishes and wouldn't count in a recent body of work. i don't think she'd even break top 10 or 12 at the olympics, where ashley can absolutely do that or better. i just don't think it would be a wise move by USFSA.

now if the argument ends up being something like wang vs bell for the 3rd spot (if ashley and karen bomb and finish lower than 4th and 5th), that may be a bit different.

Are you just being optimistic or are you actually serious? Because that's a pretty naive point of view - it is just as likely that Kaori/Satoko and one/two of the Russians skate 100% clean, leaving Bradie with a 5th place at best (don't forget Carolina's PCS!). Even that is a stretch.

For those of us who WEREN'T following FS closely at the time, though, *raises hand* it was a huge shocker and she (Hughes) seemed to come out of nowhere.

The only thing I've seen since within the same league was Meissner's Worlds win in 2006, and in many ways, that was an even bigger stunner as there was no real precedent, even as a close follower of skating at the time!
