2017 Worlds Helsinki Info and Chat

And Finland is very expensive for us Central Europeans :)
On the WC2017 FAQ it seems to only bottles are not allowed in the arena, but food is permitted. I think I'll give it a try on the first day, I will bring biscuits/chocolate and see if the security stuff lets them it.

St Louis Nationals some years ago security chased my 80-year-old mother down the concourse because she dared to sneak in a sticky bun from breakfast. Boston Worlds last year I managed to discreetly bring some food in, as I have at most Nationals. At Helsinki I'm going bring some plastic baggies to bring in my leftover breakfast and an empty plastic bottle to refill. We'll see. Between the flight and the hotel cost, it's already very, very expensive to be there.

So no thermo with hot cocoa :drama:

Well... Thermoses aren't forbidden, are they? Only bottles. Lol. I was planning to take the love of my life with me - my thermo mug to have self-made coffee with me since I generally dislike what can be bought - but I'll have to rethink.

The reason for forbidding bottles might be for security reasons rather than forcing people to buy arena drinks. Water-filled bottles can be pretty dangerous projectiles, that's why they're often forbidden during mass events. At stadium concerts, for example, I was allowed to bring in a bottle of drink... as long as I left the cap with the security. At one smaller indoor (heavy metal) concert the bartender wouldn't even sell me a bottle of drink with a cap. (I learned to cheat and started taking a spare cap with me.)

I borrowed 2 massive umbrellas from my hotel in Boston last year, which the hotel told me I could dump if necessary. But they survived security, and were returned to the hotel.

Jaana - Do you know how the food is at this arena? Is it pretty decent? Most arena food prices are pretty outrageous, are these exceptionally outrageous? For example at U.S. Nats, a bratwurst w/ BarBQ was $9.50 USD. A bottle of Diet Pepsi was $4.50 or $5 USD. Thx in advance for any help you can give.

So sorry, but I have not been on the arena for years and I do not notice any price lists on their website. In 1999 Worlds I was there for only men and pairs event, and did not think the food, wine or hot dogs were nothing exceptional in price (along the Finnish standards...). I did not bring any food along in that time and now I will just really enjoy eating junk food mostly that I normally have to avoid, LOL. In that time there was also a restaurant where one could get normal food and I did not notice that it was over-priced in any way. Hopefully somebody on this forum has been in the arena recently?

They are really making an effort with the food. I mean it looks like it's going to be amazing (fresh fruit, healthy options etc), but obviously it's also going to cost an arm and a leg. They have curated a special menu for figure skating fans (read women 45-65 years of age), so it's going to be different from what is usually served at the Arena.

High speed pursuit drama?! Were they able to catch her?

I've been at Jokerit ice-hockey games at Hartwall Arena in October / November. At least the Hesburger burger meals aren't that expensive. They have "street food" there as well and at least they used to have Valio milkshake bar or something like that. And pizza slices. I think that Coke / Pepsi etc are quite expensive and so is candy... but normal coffee / tea isn't that expensive.

Is that really the demographic? I've been a fan all my life, but I couldn't afford to go to events like this before hitting said age group!

Apparently - that's what they said at the volunteers' meeting last week anyway ;)

It's all relative, though ;)

:roll9: if I bring a note from my doctor saying that I still need all my limbs, you think they'd allow me to bring my own food?

Dunno, but thermo flasks look like bottles...you think they will be allowed? I was planning to bring one in my bag, but now I have some doubts. Maybe if it's a thermo mug will be easyer?

Sounds like Boston. We went to 2014 Nats and found the food choices pretty poor. Then in 2016 for Worlds, we were shocked to see fruit cups, salad, mac and cheese, soup, icecreams, and even a choice of gluten free items...I guess all we can do is hope! Thank you to all for your input...By the way, KC Nats was the first event where I ever had the bottle cap taken away from me after I purchased a bottle of water. Was surprised to be told that they had problems in the past with bottles being thrown. Definitely had to be at hockey games and not figure skating events! (at least I would hope so!)

ETA - I have always put my food items in my coat pockets and have never had any trouble -- sandwiches, candy, etc.

Could you tell me ca how much a coffee or a pizza slice cost there?

They did! But they had to chase her. When the incriminating sticky bun was discovered she thought she could move off and disappear into the crowd. They went after her down the concourse and were pretty serious when they nabbed her.

I can't remember Boston prices, but at KC at U.S. Nats a few weeks ago, a hot dog (which was kind of a specialty hot dog topped with cheese and bar-b-q) was $9.50. Think a regular hot dog was $7.50 USD. Not a coffee drinker, but pretty sure bottles of Pepsi and water were $5. My friend bought popcorn, and I think it was $7 (it was a BIG container). I'm just glad they take credit cards at Hartwall which will hopefully make my life easier and I won't run out of Euros and have to change more money.
