2017 Worlds Men pre-event thread

News from an article on the Nathan Fan Fest thread is that Nathan now has a 4Loop. Only done in practice, of course.

Theoretically, he could be the first skater to deliver all the quads (except 4A) in a free program.

Even more theoretically, the only triple in his program could be the back-end of a combo. Except 3A.

Think of it. The easiest jumping passes in his entire competition could be 3A, delivered once in the SP and once in the FP.

Question: an axel take-off jump is still a FP requirement, isn't it?

Aren't loops bad for the hips? Hope Nathan is being careful. It's nice to have it if he needs it for next season, but it doesn't seem worth the risk at the moment.

OK, I expect this to get no traction, but I am going to try a little derailment....;)

I do not give the *tiniest* of rat's patooties about the following:

How many quads someone puts in their program, just to put a quad in their program; what quads they are, whether they can repeat them; what the BV for the program is with 58 gazillion quads, whether it's calculated using the Fahrenheit or Centigrade scale, etc.,

What I *do* care about and what I *am* looking forward to:

Can Jason replicate that lovely, masterful Piano LP from SA that had the gate attendant crying with tears of appreciation?

Can Deniss V. continue those gorgeous, beautiful spins that he learned at the skates of the master, and keep his program together?

Can Misha overcome his injuries to show us what ballet on ice *really* looks like? Will it really be the last time we see Misha in a comp?

Can Julian Yee keep channeling James Brown, and maybe improve some of those spins?

And similar questions......

Looking forward to the gorgeous balleticism of Nathan's SP.

Jason's LP . I'm so glad we finally get to see it at Worlds.

Javi bringing out allllll the Elvis. If he can repeat the performance quality of his LP last year I will die happy.

Give me a gorgeous 3A, Han Yan! (Jumps can be exquisite and beautiful, too).

The worst part is, I went to all that trouble to memorize the base values for all the triple jumps. How quaint. Now I will have to start all over.

Jackie Wong retweeted something saying it seemed like Han Yan withdrew. I haven't checked the entries yet.

You know, it seems like you're just going thread-to-thread and telling me that skaters I love won't be competing because I'm a dummy and don't pay attention to these things ;).

Han Yan has a bony Bankart lesion, that was the latest I saw. He had three shoulder dislocations in a matter of days and then there was that comment like, he needs surgery, chronic condition but Worlds etc. Now it looks like he may withdraw but he's still on the entries list.
Sui commented on the original post that they'll visit him in the hospital after they come back, so that may further indicate he's out, but until we see an official WD, we have to wait I guess.

I also love Hanee's 3A, because when Haneeee is on, he integrates and skates whole programs with verve. Poor guy can't catch a break.:ohwell:

I love me some Javi, my fave of the "medalist contenders", but I can't get over Elvis. I can't stand Elvis, and even Javi can't sell it to me:no: I'm shallow that way;) (and completely bummed that another fave, Nic Nadeau, who also has a gorgeous 3A, may stick with Elvis next year. At least the Elvis's got spread out between JW and seniors....)

Thank you for playing.

What is this simulation? There are no jumps involved?

It was in Oakville with mostly Cricket Club skaters (and Julian Yee). There were no restrictions on jumping. All the other skaters did all their elements. Except Javier.

I hope you enjoy the championship, and that your favorite skaters do their best programs.

I saw one jumping pass unused, one fall, many pops.

I think Javi has gotten rusty after European Championships.

What is so special about this practice that it is called a simulation. It looked like a normal run-through.

Are there any special extra stuff like multiple angle camera capture? Electrode sensors on heart rate during the performance to see if skater gets abnormally anxious before doing certain elements?

Patrick talked about the simulations he does with Marina

Back in Canton, Nathan and I do a lot of simulations, and this, I think, helps me a lot! Marina picks four or five skaters, and we act like during a competition. It takes two days a week: we start with the short program run-through on Thursday, and we go on Friday with the long programs. Sometimes there is even an audience, and this makes us feel positively uncomfortable, since it’s not our normal training schedule, it’s more like during competitions.

When we do run-throughs during practice, it’s easier: you take your time, you warm up very well, and when you feel good, you start, so to get the perfect situation. Simulation is not that comfortable: you have just five minutes of warm-up and then you have to clear the ice and then when it’s your turn you immediately enter and have to start the run-through. Waiting for our turn makes us all a lot more nervous, also excited, and we feel the pressure to be on the ice alone with people watching. This way, the body gets used to move in that uncomfortable situation, like during a real competition. It’s very important to stay focused on getting a feel of your body and the crucial is to try to control every part of it.

For one, it's in a public setting. Cricket Club is a private club so they don't get the kind of audience cheering and gasping as they do in public. The other was that there were set warm ups. Two groups, though they were mixed. All the coaches were in attendance. Tracy Wilson, Brian Orser, Ghislain Briand, Joey Russell, Michelle Leigh, Doug Leigh, and Michael Hopfes. There was a camera showing the skaters on the jumbotron, but I'm not sure if it was also recording. After everyone had done their programs there was some free time where skaters asked to have bits of their music replayed or to play music from a different program. They had consultations with their coaches to figure things out. They worked on things that may have went wrong during the simulation run through, or an element they missed at their last competition.

I'll go with 66.83 (though I do think it could be lower than that )

What are you doing there people? Are you lying on the couch eating chips watching reruns of Oprah while waiting for Worlds to begin.
Put on your deduction caps and estimate what is the lowest SP to qualify for the FS.
