Amelia can represent Poland! I don't want to see Larkin Austman next Olympics , she can't jump to save her life and qualify.
What is "next generation"? it just going to hold them back, while representing another country would give them opportunity to go to Olympics

I wish Aurora represented Romania so she could start prepare for the Olympics 2022

Amelia can represent Poland!

TBH i don't want our skaters, to use our tax money in the next gen program and get out to represent another country... I believe Aurora and Amelia have all the talent in the world to be able to make it for Canada.

Let's double check that Reese Rose only has one citizenship.... before someone suggests she represents Ireland or New Zealand :laugh2:

Hi blue-ice,

I think we'll have to disagree on being the best skater she can be vs. getting a berth to a low expectations Olympic berth.

Really, NextGen is the wind beneath their wings, not holding them back.

NextGen is a newish major federal sports funding program in Canada...provides bursaries, seminars, sports science, travel costs for international events etc.

It's intended to support young athletes who are on the development track for future World and Olympic podiums.

It's separate from national team funding for the top ranked seniors.

Skate Canada was one of the first sports federations in Canada to get its act together to access NextGen resources.

Skaters are qualified based on their total score and having key elements. The fewer years left before they have to turn senior, the tougher the requirements.

So, Aurora, Amelia and 9 other qualified young women are supported by Sport Canada, Skate Canada and private donations through Next Gen. (There's an arms-length entity called Own the podium that manages and brings together matching funds.)

And for Aurora, Amelia and other Ontario skaters, their provincial bursaries are awarded based on qualifying for NextGen.

Getting government funding this early is exceptional in North America... and it's hoped NextGen will support better and earlier development of elite skaters.

Here's a link to Skate Canada's NextGen page:

And whatever you may think of Larkyn, she earned her Olympic berth at the qualifier at Nationals...

If you disagree with the approach of sending the top qualifying seniors to the Olympics, I recommend you google Tracey Wainman. She was promoted ahead to Worlds very young and then lost all her jumps at peak growth and puberty. She made an amazing comeback years later.

Tracey is now head coach at YRSA, and is a strong proponent of keeping skaters out of seniors and on the JGP circuit until they are finished growing.

I don't follow. The next Olympics is in four years. Why wouldn't any of the people you name be able to go to the Olympics for Canada in four years?

Unrelatedly, Marjorie posted a clip of Lajoie/Lagha's free dance for this season. Nice dance lift.

great lift... i dislike the warsaw concerto very much... too bad... but it's dramatic so it may be good for them to capture judges attention

Tracey's an interesting case. It's a story full of what-ifs and unknowns. I am a bit surprised that she believes in holding skaters back on the JGP, as I thought she had said that had she been held back, she may never have had the chance to go to Worlds,so from that perspective, she was grateful she got to go. But given her experiences, it's understandable. But I do think you need to take the opportunity when it arises. Otherwise, you might end up like Liam Firus, and give up the only World ticket you get (and, unfortunately, for naught).

What Tracey has said is that in her day, there were almost not international opportunities for Canadian skaters other than Worlds.

So, her early experience at Worlds at 12 years old was crucial for her.

But now she welcomes that there is a Junior circuit that can build international experience before peak growth and the switch to Seniors...

One could argue that it didn't work out as she hoped for Roman, but moving Nam to seniors success early, and then having it fall apart with his growth didn't work either...

TGee I expect a full report from Minto. Especially the junior men's event. You know we're all hyped for that.

Actually the junior dance event is so intriguing. A lot of musical chairs means old partners squaring off against each other in a huge field. But Lajoie/Lagha won't be there with their Warsaw Concerto FD. Disappointing. They will be at Championnats instead. As will Alaine Chartrand!

4everchan will you be able to crawl across town for CQE?

we are hoping to get there indeed Mango ;)

It's a tough balancing act for sure. It may work for some and not others. Personally, I'd rather take early seniors success than risk no senior success at all. Fortunately both Roman and Nam are still young and full of talent.

I'm afraid I don't really see the hype around Amelia Orzel. She can barely land her triples (awful technique, very low, and nearly no height, usually close to UR) and doesn't have a 3-3. People like to talk about bad posture and I feel like hers is worse than Konstantinova's. And she's still in novices at 14 years old? That means she has only one year left if she must stay there. I can't see her being competitive without reworking her technique and gaining a 3-3. But I hope she can prove me wrong, because her W.E. was pretty good.

I went on YouTube to look at her programs. Did she have a growth spurt? Cause it seems some of the posture/positioning quirks seems more like her getting used to being taller and not quite knowing what to do with her (new?) long limbs. But I feel like she potentially, with some training and practice, really show some beautiful lines.

As for her jumping technique, it seems like she grounds her non-jumping knee into the ice a bit and it prevents her from really getting that spring her jumps. I will say she had a nice lutz edge!

By chance will she get to get some coaching with Lee Barkell and the rest of Team TCC like Conrad?

And it seems that she is working on a 3-3! https://www.instagram.com/p/BkJMmlclRRN/?hl=en&taken-by=ameliaorzel

Currently she's still at YRSA and hasn't been at TCC for summer training or anything (afaik). But if it works for Conrad, I wouldn't be surprised if she did in the future.

Thanks for the info! I hope both Orzels have a great season!
