Re Gabby’s Carmen v her Dalila: I have the same issue with the Carmen that Seren does: the (vocal) sound is just grating. The Dalila probably has worse pronunciation (at least to my non-Francophone ears) but her voice is simply easier to listen to. I grew up listening to and singing popular music and musical theater as well as opera, and it’s not the fact that the Carmen is non traditional that bothers me - it’s just the choices that particular singer made. My guess is that by using that version in an Olympic year, they hoped people would say sure, Carmen’s a warhorse, but this is fresh and new. Which is a great idea. It just doesn’t work for me.
 
I'm becoming quite the Soucisse / Firus fan. I like their new SD and think they'll do well with it! But I noticed they withdrew from the FD (can't remember name). Anyobe know why? I'm hoping no injuries.

It's likely that the FD wasn't ready, but that they wanted to debut their RD and get feedback.

They can't register for just the RD, so it's in the way of a planned withdrawal.

It's not unusual for national team members to do this during national summer series competitions in Canada.

As national team members, they don't have to do the series to receive international assignments, as they will have to attend high performance camp in early September.

But the summer series is a good way to get their competition rhythm back. And the senior judging panels have at least 1 or 2 ISU world or Olympic level officials.
 
I was really sad to realize Gabby is keeping the same SP music. I love Carmen, and I was OK with what Aurora used for the SP. But with Gabby, I have to lower the volume to the minimum when the screechy voice starts to sing.

From an interview Carolane gave to a French-language publication, it sounded like they did originally intend to skate the free.

Supposedly they had some kind of injury that delayed their training process, so I'm guessing they just decided during the event not to push too hard.

In the frenzied chaos of an imminent cross-country move, I've been recently deprived of the watching of and general engaging with the skating. So I want to give a big THANK YOU to all who have shared updates, thoughts, and insights on the Summer Series both here and in the Summer Comps threads. In brief moments of calm, it's given me a chance to feel reasonably in the loop of what's shaking with our Canadian skaters extraordinaire, and I'm grateful.

I'd like to show my gratitude in a most Canadian way through the giving of moose and hunky lumberjacks, but that doesn't seem terribly practical (or legal?), so please accept much Happy Emoji as a token of thanks:

So, it sounds as though the injury is behind them, but their progress on the FD is not as far along as originally planned.

Given that those entries went in months ago, they can only set the summer events as targets for debuts...

Gabby didn't look very good. Underrottions, pops,questionablecostumes, she looked a little heavier than last year. It is early though.

yup... much skinnier.... i agree

but i would see that she was super fast in the SP too.. so i don't know if she lost much power... maybe mass but not necessarily power or speed

Kaetlyn won't be back for Nationals or Worlds.

This is a very disappointing bummer. She's young, healthy, and still has plenty of room to develop as an artist and competitor. I wonder if she would be taking the season off if she hadn't won Worlds? Anyway, it's just a pet peeve of mine when the defending World champ isn't interested in defending their championship.

While this is a bummer is means that Alaine better get back in shape.

It would be awful if she didn’t make the worlds team to Larkyn and maybe Veronik.

I suspect not, since she was explicitly talking about getting ready for new competition for a while. By her own admission she never expected to win.

I’d been expecting she wouldn’t be back for the rest of this season for a bit (though hoping otherwise) just because the logistics seemed more and more complicated the more I thought about it. If she wasn’t doing the tour, it would be a different story, but it would be really strenuous to go to be ready for Nationals after finishing the tour in December.

The last quad was a lot of big challenges, and I can readily see why she might decide that the one-two punch of Pyeongchang and Milan was a high that was unlikely to be repeated and it’d be more satisfying to leave off there and take it easy.

But the tenor of the release makes it sound like she still doesn’t know whether she feels like there’s sufficient motivation to continue, so probably that’ll be decided by how she feels in the spring. And, perhaps, how she feels about seeing the competitions carry on without her.
