Kaetlyn won't be back for Nationals or Worlds.

This is a very disappointing bummer. She's young, healthy, and still has plenty of room to develop as an artist and competitor. I wonder if she would be taking the season off if she hadn't won Worlds? Anyway, it's just a pet peeve of mine when the defending World champ isn't interested in defending their championship.

A bit of a bummer but not totally unexpected as she worked very hard to come back from multiple potentially career-ending injuries to get onto the Olympic podium and top of the Worlds podium. The post-Olympic year is a good time to reflect. I think it is likely that she would find Worlds in Montreal a motivator to return next season.

as I am seeing the half full glass most of the times ;) after the 5 minute devastation, i thought this about the Osmond break :

well... if I were Alicia Pineault or anyone who is in the pack for perhaps a bronze at Nationals... I would do everything in my power to have the best ever year of my career!!!! this opportunity may aspire a few of our 2nd tier ladies upwards as it's a chance in a lifetime to be on the world team! Some of the older juniors like Aurora and Sarah-Maude may also decide to go full-time senior after JGP...

Go girls!!! You can do it... there are pretty much 2 spots up for grabs for worlds...for anyone who is able to land their jumps when it will count !

In other words, this perhaps ONE YEAR BREAK, may pull up the level of more than one of these skaters who will be fighting for the spots.. it could increase the depth in the field....

Everybody will want to compete at home worlds in 2020... and it's time to make a push!

I am sad as hell as I think Kaetlyn could have still kept a bit of competitions this year. While I understand her, I don't support this decision. I guess she thinks of retiring with a big victory is the best thing she can do. I also think had she continued she could still win competitions, but world titles, not at all sure. For that you need full commitment, and it's hard to find motivation.
I think this opens the door to Alaine, Gabby and the juniors. In my mind, both Aurora and Amelia are better than most seniors, at least on paper. Amelia looks more consistent right now, but she is still maybe too young. Anyway, her Lutz is AMAZING, and so are most jumps (though she got a couple URs during this summer skate).

I understand when young skaters retire after OGM (since a LOT changes in the competitive landscape over 4 years and it's unlikely you'll repeat OGM unless you're a true GOAT), but after WGM? Isn't there something special about trying to defend your title and become a multiple time Worlds winner? Instead of trying to capitalize on her Worlds win by continuing to compete and beat her competition, it's like Kaetlyn is saying "well, I'll never beat Alina and/or Evgenia again so I won't try to win Worlds again." It's just disappointing, like if Mao had retired after 2010 or Michelle after 1998.

Kaetlyn said that the 2018 Olympics were her focus these past years. It was a dream Olympics for her followed by a surprisingly dream Worlds. If she's discerning a sense of completeness and being fulfilled in her career, then good for her. More medals don't always bring more happiness and fulfillment.

I think that in Kaetlyn's case we need to keep in mind that she is as skater pushing through fear and anxiety related to her traumatic ankle/leg break.

She's been quite frank this past season that whatever the public front, she is in constant fear of a career ending injury.

Her interview with the CBC before the Olympics really underscored the psychological work she is still doing about that.

Realistically what more does she have to accomplish.

She has a team OGM, OBM, WGM, WSM.

She has nothing to prove and she’s fulfilled her goals.

She’s also 22/23 I completely understand wanting to start a new chapter.

We don't know what her goals are, but we do know her current romantic interest Trennt Michaud is a pairs skater.

Trennt and his partner Evelyn Walsh will be competing as seniors this year.

One doesn't get the sense that Kaetlyn is thinking about being far from skating, but what next and how to make healthy psychological choices seem at the forefront for her now.

I am sad that I won't see Kaetlyn competing this season. But am I sad for her taking a year-long break? Absolutely not.
I think that the fact that so many people express disappointment/sadness over Kaetlyn skipping a season shows how profound her presence became in the past two seasons when she went back after serious injury - she was able to maintain technical solidity with performance ability, develop both in her own stride at the same time. She may even not expect that return to competitive skating will cause such effect and be as successful as we saw it - due to that I am not surprised that she decided to take more time with herself, not necessarily pushing the decision of continous competing. Forcefulness and pushing herself against her own feelings could be the worst thing to do. I think that stepping aside in the moment she is now could give her a good perspective to look at the field and see if she's still hungry for that; also - this time taken and thought put into some other activities, chances may help her decide where to push herself further - and if it won't be competitive skating, I believe that this decision will be conscious and taken out of her own will, not caused by another injury for example. In a year time, she still will know how to skate and how to perform, it won't get away - the thing is if she will want to do it and push herself physically and mentally in that area.

I just hope that she will be happy and satisfied in whatever she will pursue - she is still young and earned this 'luxury' of taking her time to decide on future as an athlete (as already accomplished one); for me, this is not problematic crossroads (like it could be after her injury, debating on return, having doubt etc.), but taking a bit of a break on the road - she really went on full speed for past two seasons and I cannot blame her wanting to slow things down.

I guess apropos of Kaetlyn taking at least the year off, since that means Ravi has more time to spend elsewhere, it's been widely discussed over on FS Universe that Aurora is supposedly training fulltime with him now. It's not updated on her ISU bio or anything like that, so it's partly based on longtime posters there who say they've heard about it from their own acquaintances. I hadn't brought it up thus far because you never know how much credence to give stuff like that. However, there's a not-insignificant amount of potentially corroborating evidence at this point, between Aurora doing nothing but western summer competitions (including most recently the BC Skate despite having previously registered for the GTSA), and the Ice Palace's Facebook listed her as one of "our" skaters in a post a few weeks ago.

If true, it's a good move for her.

I do not think Kaetlyn has something to prove. 3 olympic medals, two world medals, ending up being on top of the world.... And that, all after the injury she sustained?

Defending a world title is not something that defines a career, unless it is one's first notable achievement. Kaetlyn came back after an olympic team medal. She then had to regain momentum. For me, the future does not mean much in terms of what other achievements she would make. She has reached her goals. On top of that, some analysts consider her the ultimate best skater in the world right now and even last year. No matter whobthe competitors are, she is seen by some as the ultimate skater. So wonderful that events unfolded the way they did and that she was rewarded. Power and grace. Class act. Kaetlyn doesn't need to prove anything and of she comes back, i hope it is because she feels like training and competing. Not because some people think she needa to beat other skaters. Especially in that sport.

Hi folks,

Just a reminder

As we kick off with the JGP, please refrain from using the "State of (national)" and Fan Fest threads to discuss competitions. As always, keep competition chat in the Competition forums.

Should we find that folks are discussing competition info in these threads, they will be closed until after the competition.

To clarify, we are simply asking that posters don't use these threads as a replacement for competition threads.

You can discuss a skater's performance and the overall results of a skater. Comment's like this are ok: "So-and-so got the bronze -- yay!" or "Trusova makes history with the first quad combo in competition" in the Edge. If someone wants to put that so-and-so landed a triple Axel in the respective FF, that is no problem.

However, there are folks who will inevitably try to use the national threads as a replacement for the competition threads, and that is what we want to avoid.

The pleasure of the competition threads is the feeling of sitting around the sports bar with your buddies all watching the action together and discussing play-by-plays and elements in depth.. Many people are actually watching on various platforms and like to make comments such as, "Did you see that? She fell on her triple flip in the warm-up?" Or, "What kind of a silly costume is that?"

Thanks for explaining the pleasure of competition threads.

Even though Gogolev may have been nervous, he was tough as nails today, nailing his short program on his JGP debut. He is first after the SP,

Yes, Ted Barton noted that he was a bit tight on his final triple.

This suggests he was feeling a bit of stress.

While the audience isn't as large as at senior nationals, this is his ISU debut beyond a small advanced novice event two seasons ago.

So, it's great to see him deliver a clean skate that is representative of the quality of his skating.
