2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

According to Jackie Wong's practice reports, the quads were a struggle for both Sasha and Anna today. Unfortunately, lots of falls :(

I think it is the jetlag. Jackie Wong posted all the run throughs for every skater and nearly everyone even the consistent Miyahara had not so great practices. They all probably still suffer from the time difference. Also quads are always risky. From the looks of it even the male skaters fell on or underrotated 90% of their quads today

You all keep forgetting the obvious thing - quads are harder to land for ladies consistently since they lacks men's muscle power. I know that one get used to good things quickly - but ladies quads are still not common occurrence. They are still a miracle. Who knows how much they are falling usually at their everyday practices at home? Maybe it's typical falls ratio for quad jumps and relatively high successful attempts ratio at competitions was just streak of luck - who knows? :slink:
Also, to jump quads they need to be warmed up properly - for which they can had not enough time. I hope they have second practice rink there and let skaters to practice additional time if they want. To warm up and train quads properly before competition is important. I am sure they will be much better at next practice though - jetlag is an issue whether you want to admit it or not.

No, Chen and Shoma were much more consistent. And UR is still better than a fall. On other hand falls are 100 times better than a pop. It's a remarkable trait Eteri ladies are having - courage to always rotate the jump with almost zero pops in their whole skating career :agree:

Cheering for Liza Tukt to solidify herself as Russia's #1, similar to her amazing 2014-2015 season! It's appalling how some skaters outscore her on the jump GOES, especially on her 3Lz, which GS voted as the best of the ladies. However, she has been gaining momentum and the judges have started opening up their eyes and the TP are actually calling URs for fellow competitors, even those with reputation. I'm predicting a Top 2 finish for her at GPF and the top lady heading into Nationals.

That's how the scoring system works. Indeed, it was criticized when they introduced the +5/-5 system, but they're rating how the rules allow them to. A jump that's literally the best jump in the sport and a jump that's "kind of good" both deserve just the +1 GOE. There is no benefit to having a jump better than one just barely good enough to get the bullet point.

Only 2 of the 6 bullet points are strictly about how good the jump actually is.

Why dont Liza just ditch the 2nd 2A and put 3F and put 3 jum combo in 3S-2T-2Lo? she used to do that combo few times in her program, instead of 3S-2A sequence

With the SEQ, you don't go straight into the combo - you put your foot down first and then go into an axel. +SEQ can only be with an axel at the end, and it gets 80% of the total BV.
someone else can probably explain the actual part about the free foot better than me though, sorry
No worries. Thanks, Spirals! That helped a lot. Ugh, Liza trolling me with upgrades that aren't really upgrades.

Granted, I looked like the confused math lady meme earlier trying to figure out how a 3S-2A could even work without a step in between, so that's how fried I am at the moment [emoji28]

Comparison of Liza's jump layouts:

Old Layout
8.00 3A
10.1 3Lz+3T
5.90 3Lz
7.50 2A+3T
----------
5.39 3Lo
4.73 3S
6.93 2A+2T+2Lo

Total Jump BV = 48.55

New Layout
8.00 3A
10.1 3Lz+3T
5.30 3F
6.08 3S+2A+SEQ
----------
8.25 2A+3T
6.49 3Lz
5.39 3Lo

Total Jump BV = 49.61

The BV difference is 1.06. If she does 2A+2T+2Lo in place of 3S+2A+SEQ, her total jump BV goes up to 49.83. If she does 3S+2T+2Lo instead, her BV goes up to 50.83. But if she can put in 2A+1Eu+3S instead:

Potential Layout
8.00 3A
10.1 3Lz+3T
5.30 3F
8.10 2A+1Eu+3S
----------
8.25 2A+3T
6.49 3Lz
5.39 3Lo

Total Jump BV = 51.63

The BV difference would be 3.08. Just for comparison, Rika's total jump BV is 52.65. The above may be a good choice if Liza doesn't want to put a second 3A or second 3F.

It's definitely hard but I wish I could watch the competition live instead of just waking up to results.
Do you guys think there'll be a live stream for Russian nationals? I'd love to watch that live too.

I'm confused...what happened to Alina?

Nothing happened to Alina, she's winning left, right and center and will probably slay here at the gpf too ^_^

On another note: the hoodies that they have this year look so warm and cosy and soft I want one :D

Nothing. Alina is Russian #1 without any question whatsoever and she‘ll solidify this status with a gold medal at the GPF. ;)

It‘s just hard to accept for some. I mean, I love Liza, too and I‘m SO happy for her to make such a successful comeback this late in her career but I don‘t believe she will overtake the Olympic Champion who‘s been winning everything this season so far and is doing great. And does she have to, really? I don’t think it makes her anything less of a skater. I will cheer for all the ladies and hope everything will do their absolute best.

As a side note, their quad success rate is around 30-40% in competition.
I wouldn't worry, they will go out and skate as clean as they can.

Last but not least, their strength is not in quads, but in the rest of the layout, which has crazy high BV and that they can skate clean-ish regardless mistakes

“I did not leave Tutberidze, but in general from figure skating”

Interview of Nastya Tarakanova

- We tried all quads and found the best one for me: quadruple loop (4Lo). Only need to stop UR it.
- 4T also goes well but I don't know when and where those quads to be shown.

- Yes, I left ET group. With no other reason I left the skating totally. But I was feeling empty and decided to come back. I talked to Serafima Sakhanoitch and she told me about Pluschenko's Academy.

(long interview with many details of her life in and out of sport)

P.S. 4Lo is still not landed in competition by any female skater. Who will be the first?

Ayyyyyyyyy just calculated time difference and decided that it's worth it to wake up early to watch the Senior Ladies SP (Junior is really too early for me) and then go to sleep late to watch the FS from both seniors and juniors. Anyone else who might wanna keep me company in the late/early dark winter hours? :D

Too lazy for a proper translation....

She was frustrated that she skated clean, but got low scores and bad placements. She didn't knew why she was even doing it, since for her it is either first or nothing. Then, at rusnats, she skated clean and was not even top 6th, and was nearly out of russian team.
In summer, she quit FS, simply gave up skating.

She chose Plushenko after talking to Sima Sakhanovich.

Also, she has a youtube blog. Right now, she uses her phone to film it, but her dad said they would buy her something if she gets 1k subscribers. Just saying

Summer here, but will watch for sure =)

if for some reason Trusova and Shcherbakova miss their quads in competition, could we see Kostornaia pull off a win?
