2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I can't imagine Evghenia with another coaching team. Eteri has been with her for so long! I wonder if it's not some sort of temporary arrangement? Time will tell....

Honestly I belong to the minority who don't see and Brian as a good fit... sigh. And so many are already talking as if she having Brian as a coach is a sure thing as this point. But you're right, we can only wait and see, and hopefully not for too long.

I agree that Orser is not a good fit.
I mean, just look at rusnat, which is about 100% internal politics and +10PCs bonus for influential coach. And nationals are the most important comp of the year for russian ladies. And Orser is nobody for russian fed and i got to wonder if they will prop his student above someone from Buyanova, lets say.

Well, in russian soccer or hockey foreign coaches are rather common thing - so.. it's not that russian sport is this closed and nationalistic. Maybe for figure skating it's still unusual though.. nevertheless I don't think it really matters for RusFed which coach provides medals - as long as he provides them.

Btw, Alena refused to comment about possible leaving of Zhenya and Polina - she said she don't answer such questions until they state them officially.

The kids like Alena and Sasha and Anna and Darya there at Sambo 70 have to be in shock that Zhenya their undisputed leader is leaving them. And Polina may be leaving too. Eteri must be heartbroken. But she has so many good ones 15 and under including the OGM.

Those coaches are usually invited to work in Russia though.

As for russian nationals, it is not about being closed and nationalistic, its about internal politic games. See how sotskova was propped at last nationals for example. See Konstantinova getting insane scores in russia only. Those are internal politics between coaches and rusfed. Now, Orser cannot do those games, which means that if medvedeva moves to Orser, she will have much less internal support - and trust me, those folks could even just screw her simply to show that russian coaches are better than those random foreign guys.

Yes, but we are talking about Evgenia Medvedeva here... She'll be fine as long as she delivers...

Yep. Evgenia was sent to talk to IOC. She can do her own internal political games.

I disagree. She was sent to IOC, yes, but that has nothing to do with her own weight in rusfed politics.
"As long as she delivers"... No guarantee here. We have seen this season that rusfed puts their own politics above anything else, including spots or medals (see them proppring Konstantinova because whatever, despite having like 3+ seniors who performed better than her internationally, and only lost to her at rusnats because of the insane PCs she got there). Medvedeva is already not unbeatable.

Well, be an Eteri girl didn't help Polina to make the world team. So, following your logic, RusFed could take Med out even if she stays with Eteri.
I believe Med knows this and she wants to improve and, somehow, find a way to stay on top. That's why she's going to Orser.

When we talk about the state of Russian ladies skating I have to say I am not overly confident that these amazing juniors including Trusova will make it to seniors with their big tricks. It is a crap shoot if they survive puberty. So Trusova with her quads well it is over a year before we will see her at major Senior events - a lot can change in respect to her body.

Same with Zagitova. The Japanese ladies seem to be more consistent and their body types are less vulnerable to puberty. So Russia has talent but will it survive juniors and if they make it how long can they survive in seniors. If Sotnikova, Radinova, Liza and Yulia and maybe Pogo are finished it means by 20 or even 18 or 19 its over.

(and its not even confirmed she is going to orser but well).
Again, Orser has 0 influence with rusfed, less than Eteri. So imho, if medvedeva choses to train outside russia, next year at nationals she will be behind trusova and kostornaia.

@Skater Boy
On japanese ladies consistency - only consistent one is Satoko. Wakaba and Marin make much more mistakes than Alina, for example, and Rika is less consistent than Trusova and Kostornaia. Some skaters are just inconsistent to start with, puberty or no puberty.

I'm not sure Orser will necessarily help Evghenia go in the right direction. I've never been a fan of the artistic side of any of his athletes.

Well, if Kostornaia and Trusova were going to do their 3A-quad-game, then she‘d probably have been behind them anyway. It‘s not exactly likely she can surpass 90 TES only by PCS, just saying. I think she knows this. But she‘s thinking long term. She wants to stay competitive and she knows about her technical problems (e.g the infamous lutz edge) and she intends to change them. And besides, nothing can change the fact that she‘s two time European and World Champion and two time Silver Medalist at the OG. She‘s famous not only in Russia but all over the world. And imho, this shouldn‘t be played down by Rusfed just because she‘s changed coach. It‘s not like she changed country or something! She was their star for two years straight! So if they want to punish an already established skater who‘s survived puberty and more or less sure to deliver (one must remember that she showed three clean skates at the OG while injured) for looking for new perspectives and put other young, not really established skaters above her who still have that puberty monster hanging over them, then so be it. Honestly.
