2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Russian coaches don't get paid for results, they are paid a salary. Otherwise the great majority of coaches who do not train regional/national team members would get no money whatsoever. They get extra money from successful students, it's true.
Russian coach usually gets 50-70% of athlete's bonus paid by ministry of sport. And first coach also gets some money for Olympics medalists. Russian coach dreams to have OGM. If OGM leaves his coach for foreign one it could be hurting for training system and hierarchy, it could kill coaches motivation.

I mean if you really think about it, having a champion athlete is actually contributing to the economy. I presume Russia taxes her endorsements, prize money, and money earned at shows (at home and abroad)? In this way it may actually be in the country’s financial interest to pay for foreign training if it provides a better opportunity to win prize money and gain endorsements. Also, the foreign exposure may create more business opportunities. Look how popular Zhenya is in Japan. I’m not sure this will translate to Canadian/US popularity but it can’t hurt.

I think their reluctance with funding her is that at this time Orser is an unproven entity in terms of training Russian figure skating champions. However if he and Zhenya are able to outperform Eteri’s girls in the upcoming years you’ll see a lot more kids undergoing foreign training. But I’m not sure how likely that is.

RusFed just hasn't enough money and they have to dismiss a few training groups in regions to compensate Orser's payments. But there could be specific funding from Ministry of Sport or sponsors to pay for Medvedeva. I doubt that other athletes will be allowed to go overseas because it could kill Russian coaching system. And tbh Fed is not interested to pay a lot of money for old athlete when there are decent Russian coaches and young, cheap, effective skaters. Zhenya is a rare exception. I think, maybe someone in Ministry wants to reward her for Lausanne.

not sure, because well, its not like lausanne was a big deal.
Also, looking at how fed is going, they dont seem eager to pay at all, demanding a training plan to then decide if they will pay and so on.

Russian athletes potentially being banned completely from Pyeongchang is no big deal?
The doping scandal was all over the news in multiple countries at the time.

Also, I was under the impression all athletes on the national team had to submit a training plan. T/M have to as well, it was mentioned in that statement when they announced they were gonna be coached by Trankov.

So confused — if skaters are barely getting any winnings how do they afford all the Louis Vuitton’s, Burberry, etc ?? I doubt all them have rich parents

I wonder if Zagitova would want to train next year abroad, will the RusFed allow her? i suppose that they will.

Yep, the thing is - they are with their coaches and so on, so that is easy.
I mean, can Medvedeva and Orser actually come up with a training plan before she even arrives there? Can Orser come up with something for a skater he never coached before in short time?
What would be the timeline to write this plan? Med goes to Canada in the middle of june.

You say it like Medvedeva was only reason to prevent it but even some top skaters were banned with no explanation https://pre00.deviantart.net/aa82/th/pre/i/2010/208/e/4/usagi_because_i_can_by_kaoru_hitachiin_s.jpg

Yep i mean, tons of athletes were banned for no reason.
Then, lots of stuff that CAS changed later after the Olys too.
Then, consider the number of medals russia won at this Olympics.
Then, consider that many russians wanted Russia to not compete at all (including important people), and after the Olympics were like "yeah, I told you".

It was not like she suddenly saved russian olympics.

I mean bonuses paid for coach apart from athlete's prize money. I don't know how much Fed and coaches have in prize money.

Not sure where to put it, but rumors are that a bunch of Medvedeva's fans basically bullied Diana (Eteri's daughter) on instagram.

Dude, and this is why I don't want "idols" in figure skating. It would be much better if the skaters had short careers and would be "replaced" every year.

Well they sure aren't real fans if they're resorting to bullying her former coach's daughter, who she was probably relatively close with (not as much as others like Alina, but come on, they trained together for years)
