2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I do think that Daria has a better chance of moving up now that Polina and Evgenia left since Eteri knows she needs another senior alongside Alina
I agree, I never want to see Alina so upset and sad again

Daria... I feel bad now because I totally forget about her all the time. But I don‘t think that it‘s very likely she‘ll get a major spot anyway. Zhenya‘s still officially Sambo, Alina too obviously and they never gave three spots to all Sambo girls. I personally hope for Radio because I just like her as a skater but that‘s ... far from likely, actually. I‘d say it‘s either Maria or Polina or Gubanova.

You're right, politics will play a huge role I fear. But hopefully they're done putting Masha on the team after seeing her fail the second half of the season a second time. And Radionova is visibly struggling  so I think if it had to be a Buyanova girl, I'd pick Polina, or Gubanova. I just really want Dasha on the team, or Polina if it couldn't be her.

I'm interested in seeing how Team Tutberidze does now that skater that they all look up to won't be there...

I‘m not a great fan of Masha either and her programs are always so... bland, I believe but just for understanding: Why do people always say she failed Olympics and Worlds? If I recall correctly she was somewhere around 8th in both events. That‘s obviously not great for a Russian skater but compared to... say... Konstantinova that‘s not that bad ?? It‘s not like she was ever in position to medal at worlds or olympics or was she?

I‘m going for Polina, really. Love her jumps. I don‘t know that much about Dasha. Is she this good? Maybe I‘m gonna watch a few skates of her to get an impression. :)

They should do fine. It‘s not like they don‘t have an Olympic Gold Medal in their team... or a junior world champion... or a junior silver medalist. Or... I guess you get it. But yeah, I‘ve already said it: For Alina, it‘s going to be tough. Sasha and Anna and Alena? Not so much. They‘ll have Alina to look up to.

Ksenia Melkumova new SP

I got such flutters watching this. I can't even recall the last time. Yes, skating skills...

Who is this? Which group does she train in? She‘s really good. Personally, I love her spins. So many talented skaters everywhere, it‘s almost insane. Wonder which one‘s will be on top 2022. I can‘t even make guesses right now because there are just too many. Personally, I‘m hoping for a Russian gold medal in team skating with Alina and Evgenia in the team and a Russian podium sweep for the single skating :D with... let‘s say... Anna (1), Alena (2), Sasha (3) Yes, I know, that‘s NOT going to happen at all. Just my wishful thinking.

Well... the main competitors for that third medal have had history with not skating clean so if she could have replicated some of her best performances she stood a reasonable chance. Albeit the less prestigious way of seeing your competition do themselves in.

Masha has had really dynamic programs over her career so I’m not surprised she is hit or miss with some people but she’s had several programs that were far from bland. Her best programs were as s junior but I’d say the same of Zhenya too

Well about Masha for me it's not about placements but about how she skated -- not so well, making mistakes in nearly everything and placing 4th at Euros.. FOURTH... there's literally no way to place lower if you're Russian...

I love Polina and Daria. I think Dasha's really good but a lot of people think she's bland and doesn't have much personality. Personally, I think it's those garbage programs of hers, and I want her to do some salsa maybe -- she's got a really fun and sassy personality and I want to see it on the ice which should help her get the PCS she needs. Her jumps: Absolutely magnificent :)

Well, I‘d say Kostner, Osmond and Miyahara were all more likely to get that OBM sooo... I don‘t get how people blame her for that. Maybe one of them would falter (Caro, presumably, FS is never her strong point sadly these days), maybe a second one, too. But all three? That‘s not very likely. Worlds.. with Evgenia out, maybe.

I didn‘t follow Maria as a junior so I don‘t know her programs from then but I can just say that this season they were boring compared to Alina‘s and Evgenia‘s which all had a solid, recognizable and iconic theme. Alina‘s balletic programs in her tutus... Zhenya‘s Anna Karenina... you‘d remember them. With Maria, though? They were okay, Swan Lake and what was the second one again? But not something people see one time and remember. And that‘s something you need for an Olympic Season, especially if you‘re Russian #3 after the likes of Med and Zagi which makes you already pretty prone to being completely and utterly overlooked. She would have needed something unique to stand out.

And I just rewatched Zhenya‘s old junior programs and it‘s funny because I just find her new ones sooo much better. But I guess that‘s because I‘m a really, really, really big fan of the miming. (Oops :D)

I think main issue with Maria are her URs, which she gets a lot. She is around 8th at Worlds, and that looks like her maximum (since her URs do not seem to get better over 2 last seasons).
So tbh, I can easily see Tsurskaya or Gubanova replacing her, as they have a similar scoring potantial.

I never miss a chance to spam this program out there :)

Watching this on livestream was the first time I really watched Masha and I loved it and I can become quite loyal. It’s very original skating IMO which was her calling card back then. Her R&J was from a modern day movie and nothing like traditional R&J programs or music. Heck she’s even done a Santana program :)

She has several issues honestly. She needs to use the tano more tastefully and not on every jump. I think it helped extend her spine though which seemed to help eliminate some of the UR issues. It seemed to be a solution to the UR problem but I think it hurt her PCS too. Take notes Dasha ;) REAL TALK: Tarakanova is the perfect example of how to spread out the arm variations. Different jumps in different situations spread throughout different programs.

Also...Masha has nice character and can perform so the programs need to better reflect that but it sounds like she’s going in that direction. We’ll know for certain at Russian Nationals though where she fits in. She’s stretched her patience with the judges far enough. I’d have given Gubanova and Kostornaya 2nd and 3rd place last year if I were on that judging panel. :)

I’m curious about Polina but I suspect they’ll give her boring programs this year. It’s just a gut feeling I have. :hopelessness:

Just when I thought I couldn't love Nastya Tarakanova more, I rewatched her junior nationals free skate and the look of pride and joy she had for a split second when she added the combo onto the flip was so precious ahhh

Yes, I know, everybody was thinking of a Russian podium sweep and instead Caro sneaked in and took 3rd😂😂 Must be terrible, though, seeing your copatriots on a podium realising that if you had just been a little better (one place to be correct) you could stand there with them. I feel sad for her, but well. I feel sad for a lot of overlooked skaters.

I love Polina! Her jumps are just gorgeous. If anyone ever dares to say again that Russian ladies don‘t have any technique just show them some of Tuktamysheva or Tsurskaya‘s jumps. They‘re textbook, really. Daria‘s... I‘ve watched a few programs of hers and maybe it‘s because of them (they‘re very... well, a bit boring) and she didn‘t really stand out to me... :/ Maybe she could, if she had interesting programs but now? Polina looks better to my mind and she didn‘t have that great programs either. I do hope they both get nice ones so that they can finally show their potential.

I agree that her tanos are a bit... used too often. But that‘s not really her fault, she doesn‘t make her own programs after all.

Personally, I‘m not too fond of her so I really hope Polina‘ll get the third spot this year. She‘s just a sentimental favourite of mine. Please don‘t give her bland programs, pleaaaase. But yeah, I understand where your feeling is coming from. I think this is not very unlikely, sadly. :(

Interesting program, I have to admit this. But well, I can‘t help but say that I still don‘t feel anything while watching her skate. But that‘s just personal taste, I guess and has nothing to do with her quality as a skater.

Zhenya‘s program seems to have a pretty interesting theme but it‘s not a personal favourite after watching it. The change from the melancholic music to the upbeat, happy one is just too... sudden ? For my taste at least.
