2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Same here. I expected the line-up for the first JGP to be someone who actually earned it. Someone who proved themselves last season.
What is your definition of "actually earning it"?

In that case, Alina Zagitova surely did not earn her appearance in the first JGP event in 2016. And hence, not only is there history of a skater "not earning" her appearance the season before yet still getting selected, but also of it working out pretty well.

If I remember correctly Gulyakova was training a 3A last off-season but she had a growth spurt during the summer and was focused more on keeping consistent and holding onto her other jumps. Still she’s with Mishin now so maybe that 3A will make an appearance after all!

Guliakova switched to mishin??!?! Cool, maybe his influence can help her get noticed.

Random, but I find Anna Tarusina’s 3Loop-3Toe combo refreshing and interesting.

Well, Mishin is known for teaching jumps well so maybe we‘ll see another 3A girl next season! :cheer:

The only "earned" in junior grand prix is when a skater wins gold on their first JGP and then the second JGP is earned indeed.

Hmm, it's interesting. If it's true that South Korea send You Young there and Japan indeed sends Yuhana Yokoi, this should pretty much be the most difficult JGP event of the season for the Russian ladies assigned there. I wonder how Russia is going to react, or if this is what they'll be sticking with regardless.

We beat them once (Trusova/Kostornaya), we will beat them again (Anna/Anna) :).

If Young You and Yuhana Yokoi are the biggest threats then this JGP season should be an easy sweep for the Russian girls

Unless I’m missing something important, from the RusFed’s perspective, there’s not much to be feared from Yuhana Yokoi and You Young.

I hate to sound harsh, but You Young’s had 3A and 4S videos from practice since before the 17-18 season, and she was still falling on simpler jumps all season. She underrotated and fell during her 3A attempt at the recent Korean junior test skates, and her attempt in the warm-up was also underrotated. She’s a very talented girl, of course, but she has yet to bring it when it really matters.

Yuhana Yokoi will probably benefit from the new backloading rules - if I remember correctly, last season, she had a 2A-3T-2T right before her FP ended, so she could be able to put all her combos in the second half.

Considering everything, though, Tarusina is still likely to be able to beat her and You Young, and a clean Shcherbakova definitely will. (If she isn’t clean, she probably won’t, but even if she has a disastrous skate, Tarusina will be there too, and she’s always been consistent. If I had to put money on anybody skating clean, it’d probably be her.)

I hope people here won't be disappointed when the season actually begins because i see that pretty much everybody is already certain every non russian girl is not gonna deliver and the russians (even those who have been inconsistent past seasons) are gonna be landing all their difficult layouts, quads included. I understand having confidence is Sasha for example, she has showed us fireworks before but some of you are talking like you are certain Alena's 3A is gonna be landed perfectly in competition even tho just like other skaters it has only been seen once in practice. Same with Anna's quad. Those aren't easy jumps, you don't just whip them out of your pocket like that whenever you want

Never say never. If somebody told me last August that a girl without 3-3 will medal at JGP I would laugh aloud. But Emmy Ma did it.

But how many of Tutberidze's girls have been inconsistent in the past seasons?

I think it's much more likely that they skate consistently well than that they don't.

Having a 3-3 isn't that important. Of course, it's a problem for the SP, but for the FS you can do something such as:

2A-3T
2A-3T
3Lz-2T-2Lo

and you're not really losing any points at all.

Importantly, look at that list of subs. There's no skater even close to being as weak as Alisa Fedichkina. Who's the weakest on there, Kostyuk? Even her I'd likely trust to defeat any non-Russian skater, though she has had some issues with consistency. Actually, perhaps Vasilieva is weaker. Still...

It's not only eteri's girls people are talking about tho. But even so, we are yet to see Anna and Alena's quad & 3A in competition so i don't know why everybody here is talking like it's already done deal and we're 100% sure the non russian girls aren't gonna perform well. But then i've seen people on this thread make fun of Rika's inconsistency even tho she's landed 3A-3T so :palmf:
