2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Even if multiple worlds + GPF + euro is gonna be hard to achieve, i just want to see all these young girls compete for a long time. It's heartbreaking when they retire early before they even achieve their true potential (Yulia :( ) so i'm praying for everybody's physical and mental health. Let's go for longevity
I'm especially excited about someone like Alena who already has such mature skating, imagine how much more beautiful her skating could get with experience :luv17:

It’s so true I would love to see a matured Alena skating, problem is she will likely never make it to international competitions by that point.

Well if the trend continues with so many new Junoirs coming up there won’t be enough space on the GP for someone who is 20-22ish. As only 3 Russians can attend each event.

Plus I don think the fed will be giving challengers to someone who can’t earn a GP.

Alas we are in an age where more and more junoirs will start landing quads and 3A and there just won’t be room for older skaters in Russia.

I think Med will be the last skater we see competing by the age of 20.

There are only 3 maximum spots per country but how can you predict Alena won't make it? she's had a great season last year, she's only gonna turn 15 this month. We are all assuming more and more russian juniors are gonna be landing quads left & right but in reality only Sasha has landed them so far. Quads aren't just something everybody can land as long as they practice them. We have yet to see if Anna can land it properly & consistently in competition. On top of that, we don't know if girls jumping quads as juniors will land them after puberty, when they get older. We'll have to see how it goes for Sasha & Anna but i wouldn't write Alena off because she has no quads or hasn't landed her 3A in competition yet. Especially IF she can land her 3A in competition this season. We have yet to see a senior lady land quads but we have witnessed Mao landing her 3A throughout her career and even in her 20s so that's not as crazy as predicting all russian girls are gonna be landing multiple quads soon.

Like ever :laugh2:
No from Russia...

And look at the track record even now. Who is left that’s over 22.

Just Leonova last year but she’s not getting any assignments this year.

Also if you look at last years SB and look at who will likey be moving up next year you’ll see that Liza would be too low on the list to get an event if all those above her receive two.

Liza, Daria, Sofia, Serafima, and Gubanova would all get nothing.

It’s not hard to imagine other juniors also overtaking Radio either.

I love how she got the 3a back right after the Olympics and then trolled herself on social media about it. :laugh2:
I know right! :laugh2: Don't know how consistently she's landing them but this season would probably be the one last chance for her to regain her throne.

Nobody dare guess what kind of plot the God of FS has in mind. It would not be wise to assume that all top junior ladies get through their puberties smoothly and healthily.
There are 9 Russian ladies above Liza on the SB list last year, yes, but I would like to remind you that anyone with an SB of top 24 is GUARANTEED one assignment. Therefore, according to this list, Liza will still get 1 GP. Unless Rusfed forces her to retire to free up that spot, that is.

Sam's point likely was that seeing the Russian juniors training quads might push other juniors from other countries to train quads, too. And as a result, over-20 year olds might be pushed out on an international level. As for the 3A, Kosto herself has one, and a good one at that. Let's see if she retains it for long, and if she learns a quad.

Anyway, there is a weird dual-storyline where juniors will likely lose quads when they reach seniors and so need to work on PCS instead, and yet also won't therefore pushing out more mature skating. The one that fits someone's views at any given point of time gets picked to create whatever narrative. Skating will go where it will go. /shrug

I think making guesses right now is pretty pointless, imo. But we can’t help it, I get that.

Still, nature is a weird thing. Maybe even destiny or whatever you‘d like to call it. Everyone predicted Med would be eaten alive by the puberty monster yet she wasn‘t. Then everyone predicted she‘d win the OGM, yet she didn‘t. Now people are either predicting Sasha is going to lose all her quads, or that she‘ll further revolutionize ladies figure skating. Both versions can easily happen. But in the end we can only wait and see anyway.

I think the instant when RusFed will force skaters to retire or at least to reject GP participation could come soon. For example if there are 15 Russian skaters in SB list then only those three who were at World top will receive two assignments. The state of 3 skaters with 2 assignments and 12 skaters with one is clearly not good for RusFed so about two or three skaters should not participate to provide others second spot.

22 year old World Champion, what I'm sure the 12 year olds mentioned are dreaming of becoming one day, who won over fellow competitors that used arm variations on almost every jumping pass. And for the record, I myself appreciate arm variations done in moderation.

All season she was beaten by 15-17 years old skaters (even twice by Sotskova), she won Worlds because one wasn't competing and the other one bombed, which tells you that sure everyone can have a bad day and that's why you should look at the entire season instead of one competition.

It is still an amazing result indeed, but we all know that if Alina skated as good as she did at the Olympics or the Europeans, she would have won Worlds easily.

Arm variations are an element of difficulty regardless of the position of those, yes once you trained you get used to it, but still you have to train it, you spend time working these things. (which is also what they say in the interview, they worked on the stamina to sustain fully backloaded programs and now they have to throw everything away because some people decided that is no longer okay)

I don't like how certain commentators (CBC among all, if i remember correctly Mark Hanretty from Eurosport, and also TSL) pushed the idea that some of these skaters can do certain jumps only with the arms, which i found it a little disgusting cause it looked like an attempt to diminish the talent of these athletes.

For the record, they all learned their triples without variations first: domestic competitions in Russia are pretty much all available on youtube, so we can all see it (including these people mentioned above).

LOL, I don’t know why people think that just because a girl is a newbie senior, she won’t get the same high PCS as the older girls. The judges don’t score PCS based on age or what’s happening on the ice; they score PCS based on jumping ability and whether or not they like you. A junior can easily beat a senior. Sure, the junior’s PCS might be slightly lower by a few points, but it’s still high enough in the end. The judges will make happen what they want to happen. If they want Trusova’s spins to receive all +3 it’ll happen all across the board save for one or two judges. If they want Liza T to win they’ll bump up the PCS and the GOE on spins. If they wanted Medvedeva to win the OG, then Zagitova ‘s PCS wouldn’t have jumped from 62+ to 75+. And so on...

Someone needs to create a senior level Russian TV show/Circuit where skaters who retire from ISU can compete professionally with each other. Insert some backstage cameras and fluff peices and I think you’d have a pretty cool show that people could go see live or just follow on TV.

The interest and talent is there (at least in Russia) to start looking outside of the ISU as a way for skaters to earn a living and grow as performers and athletes.

Right now the ISU protects and preserves the federations and not the athletes

I can’t be the only one who thinks Med still has a chance to win Olympic gold right ?? 🤔😁😁

Realistically... small chances. But you‘re certainly not the only one HOPING that Med will get her Olympic Gold Medal. I‘m with you to. Medvedeva for OGM 2022!
