2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Russia has a basis for needing more spots. Sinitsyna has a 3Lz-3Lo combo and is likely to be left out. Even if we took Gubanova out and put Sinitsyna in instead, Viktoria Vasilieva would still not get spots, and she has a 3F-3Lo. I don't think it is fair for a country with dozens of girls with a 3Lz-3T combination and clean skates to have such a low number of spots, even if it is the max. There are simply too many talented ladies, and I don't think that that should be a problem. But it is.

ETA: The difference between skaters like Amy Lin and Silvia Hugec, who are senior eligible but competing in juniors, is that they are not blocking anyone. Gubanova, and Konstantinova last year, were blocking skaters who had no other option because they weren't old enough for seniors. Many of these girls had more of a basis for getting spots, but they did not have the right influential coach or love from TAT and the RusFed.

Gubanova isn't blocking anyone. She earned her spot by out skating them. The best eligible (age+ no senior GP) girls should get the spots, it doesn't matter whether they are 13 or 18 years old. This is the case for other countries, there is no reason Russia should be any different.

Vasilieva is very talented but has yet to keep it together in the free skate. What good is a more difficult combination if you're negating it with mistakes? At this point I see nothing that suggests she is likely to score higher than Gubanova in the JGP, therefore Gubanova is more deserving. Again, we need to be focusing on sending the best eligible skaters with the best chance to medal and make the final, not on sympathy.

Sinitsyna has a better case against Gubanova, but Gubanova was 4th at nationals which is pretty well deserving of a spot IMO and generally receives higher PCS. I think her main issue is with Kanysheva. She was right behind her at nationals but then beat her at Elders and demonstrated a beautiful 3L+3Lo along with better skating skills, musicality, and interpretation at test skaters. To me its a no brainer. But ideally they just give 8 initial spots so everyone can have a chance. OR they go ahead and give Gubanova the host spot, but knowing the fed this is unlikely.

Gubanova hasn't become anyone. It's the fans who are fickle. She's an exquisite performer, and I hope she is healthy & has the chance to compete this season. I really do not care where as long as she has the chance to perform on the international scene so that the judges have the chance to reward her unique performance abilities. I think she is a special performer, the only one of the Russian junior ladies that gives me that exquisite sense of perfection.

Which is to say nothing against the impressive competitive nerves and/or amazing technical achievements of some of the other ladies. I also find Trusova to have both charm and pizzazz, but it's a very different sense of performance than Gubanova, who is closer to my Sasha (Cohen, that is).

1) Yes, two seasons ago she was jumping like Satoko, last season was already better but she needs the most difficult combinations to win medals though.

2) With the 3A or/and the 3ltz-3T yes, otherwise i just can't see it unless judges start to give her higher GOEs which is a possibility given the new rules. (but i don't think it will happen)

3) Yes she is keeping the Anna Karenina FS, i don't know about how she'll do, nobody knows. I hope she ditches all the tanos this season, that could improve the air position on her jumps.

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing all of these young Russian ladies in the junior GP. I don't normally watch junior skaters but I'm going to make more of an effort this year mostly because of the Russian jr. ladies. I need to keep on top of who is likely to be competing for Gold in 2022.

It depends on which Tuktamysheva you refer, cause Liza pre-puberty was a completely different skater than what she is now. Liza that won everything in 2014-15 really wanted to prove something, and gained confidence from pre-season events. Plus she went to a back-to-basics approach with the programs. For me two things:

- Mishin needs to stop watering down the choreography, she needs more transitions otherwise judges will never give her the big marks. Also please stop changing the position of the elements like 10 times during the season. You need stability to stay consistent.

- She needs to have that fire back (working with a sport psychologist maybe, idk) if she wants to win competitions, cause after World 2015 she almost felt satisfied with the result, and started to slow down since then.

As for Konstantinova, I wouldn't mind if they send her to Lambiel to improve on the skating skills (if i remember correctly they did it last year with Kolyada and it worked). if she gets consistent with the jumps i'll be very happy, I don't like how Moscow-centric Figure Skating currently is in Russia, SPB has ice rinks and good coaches too.

Buianova has a bunch of seniors to lobby for them. Not for GP, but for Worlds and Euros.
I see how it would make sense to get Gubanova into JW instead - yeah, she wont win her JGP and will not make JGPF, but she can have the non-Eteri spot for JW easily.

Actually, what I appreciate is how frank she has been about her challenges, and how Mishin has stayed supportive of Liza through all of this.

She was his first female champion, and he committed to her for the long haul.

This is quite lovely. I'm so glad she has someone like Mishin in her corner. Maybe we all need a Mishin in our corner.

I don't want to discuss who would not deserve a jgp event, but I can say that Sinitsyna definitely deserves a chance.
I'm happy for Tarusina for getting one, hope she will do great this season .
