2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

If TAT throws shade it's funny and everyone is like "oh TAT such a diva LOL" but if BOrser says anything that could be interpreted by people who dislike him anyway as throwing shade he's trying to upset Eteri and Alina before test skates to purposefully throw them off their game because he is a bad man.

I never said he was “bad.” I think he’s being strategic and knows how to get under Eteri’s skin. She’s demonstrated some questionable impulsive behavior when upset. And he did it in a way that I wouldn’t call unsportsmanlike. I’m impressed honestly.

This thread always delivers

I think nobody is ready for the Evgenia vs Alina mess that is going to happen this season. They haven't even revealed their programs at the test skates yet :laugh2: Honestly there's no winning in this. Zhenya just has an army of haters who are ready to jump at her throat the second she makes a mistake plus i'm sure many people are willing to see her flop already after dominating for so long. If she doesn't deliver, we'll hear about it.
Alina on the other hand has her fair share of haters who dislike her for being a "lutz-loop jumping robot with no emotion" who had the nerves to win the olympics when the favorite was injured; with how many people were already happy about her poor performance at worlds, i expect many "oh she was just lucky at the olympics then" comments.
I can sense the drama coming from afar and i'm not ready :drama: i'm sure just this sunday already when we'll see their free skate programs, the mess will begin!

When a huge star changes coaches, people are interested in the change and what is different. I'm interested! Fans are interested in how coaching environments differ and how coaches have different approaches. I don't think it's a bad thing.

Results matter less to me. I won't turn on Evgenia (or grow to like Alina) based on their results. Their individual happiness is more important. And as a fan, I care more about performances, programs, and seeing how skaters develop than I care about placements.

And if Evgenia makes mistakes this season - who is to say she wouldn't have made the same mistakes if she stayed with Eteri? Yulia tried to stay with Eteri - it clearly didn't work.

Look i think Evgenia made a smart move, we all knew what was going to happen with Eteri: perhaps another good season and then the decline because Eteri starts to care less about you (you're no longer the top skater and they don't want to spend time reworking every single element), at least with Brian there is the benefit of the doubt.

But if Evgenia makes mistakes all season i'd start to wonder whether the change really paid off or not. It happened with Yulia too, cause at TEB she was still with Eteri and she looked more secure than her previous outings, and people wondered if moving to Sochi was worth it or not.

To stay in topic: i really love the Panova girls so far! They're doing such a great job and they definitely do have personality in their skating. I don't have enough space in my heart to adopt so many russian girls but i'll definitely be keeping my eyes on them.

So, have we talked about the fact that Gubanova jumped 3Lz-3Lo combo in the free?? If we have, I‘m terribly sorry I‘m just not up to date today.

Hmm..
Was this thread renamed to State of coaches of Russian ladies?
Too much talk about nothing. Let's wait for test skates and competitions before discussing. Interviews don't matter much or sometimes even anything.

I have enough space! My heart is filled with Russian skating ladies!

I think people were so traumatized by her Sotnikovaesque SP they were too scared to watch the FS :slink: i did mention that Liebestraum fit her really well tho. A few pages ago. She did look kind of exhausted to me tho, is it just me who saw that?

Yeah, because trash-talk is veeeery impressive. Indeed it should be encouraged in figure skating.

I'm glad she did it but my goodness, I'm too scared to watch any lutz, flip, or toe of hers now. I think there were a couple of uncalled URs.

At the end it seemed like she was running out of steem, yes. Especially with that last spin. Not sure what went wrong there. I guess she was trying to finish with the music. But the jumps at the start were quite impressive. The 3Lz-3lo looked wonderful! I didn‘t expect it at all and when she suddenly didn‘t reach back after the lutz for a toe, I was like:  But when she landed it so beautifully, it changed to: :hap10:

So, I‘ve made my decision: LOVE for her FS, tolerance for the akward SP because almost everything deserves tolerance. Everything BUT THAT DRESS! No tolerance for you, weird Sotnikova-esque orange-black mixture of fabric!

Can‘t we just... let it be? Please?

Where will we even see her compete this season? I'm already sad :sad21:

To be fair, that kind of shade is the Olympic level of trash talk. It’s the same as having Alina do 5 triples in a row in practice. It’s not needed for warm-up, the whole point is to intimidate competition and psych them out. It happens in every sport. These are the little mind games that go on behind the scene, as long as they don’t cross any clear lines which I dont think either example does.

Well at least Evgenia didn't claim she deserved a platinum medal after Pyeongchang :laugh2:

Can we move on already?
When will we hear news about the test skates? I feel like we need it right now. Even tho i already know it'll bring its own fair share of drama

Um... Do I really need to tell you the difference? Don't know if Alina's five-triples combo is mind games or not, but it is element of this sport. While Orser's trash-talk is just petty badmouthing a-la MMA.

Her flips looked scary to me, too. The first combo was fine, I think. No idea about the 3Lz-3T, though. But she‘s probably dealing with puberty right now and for that she‘s doing really well. But this UR thing... it‘s not only Gubanova, it‘s Sotskova, too. Masha has such a beautiful jump technique, with perfectly clean edges on both Lutz and Flip but those frequent URs ruin everything for me. Is this a general issue with Buyanova? Because I really don‘t want to see Polina underrotate her beautiful jumps this season. :(

Same. Why not give her the Rostelecom spot, rusfed, why? :sad21:

I would give her any platinum medal she wants. :dev3:

But he didn’t outright bad mouth anyone. If he had that would be wrong. But he spoke about himself and his process. The insults were implied and read between the lines. He didn’t outright say anything negative or reproachable about another coach. But he said it to a certain person and in a way that was meant to rattle his competition. Eteri having Alina show off before a competition is similar in that it’s meant to get insides people’s head. It had no practical value, it’s meant to distract and undermine the confidence of the competition. Both of these example are not unsportsmanlike. People look for an edge however they can as long as it’s not outright or overtly unsportsmanlike.
