2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I say this as someone who supports Zhenya and her coaching change. It is a little shocking to see her of all people show up to test skates not fully prepared. Nerves, strategy, getting over injury or not. I’m just accustomed to seeing her show up at least as determined and prepared as her opponents. It’s a little hard to adjust to and I have to agree with many initial reactions that the ladies field in Russia is actually pretty open. I don’t think anything is off the table.

I expect a nice friendly Skate Canada for her though :agree:

She moved halfway across the world to a brand new coach, culture, and life just 2 months ago. Have you ever done anything like that? Of course there has to be a transition period.

What was Alina's excuse, if we are expecting Evgenia to be perfectly prepared?

Sam's message did not even mention anything about Alina. why must it always become a Zhenya wasn't ready but what about Alina with you people? :rolleye:
It is indeed not surprising that Zhenya isn't at her best already because she's had a rough summer with an injury and moving to the other side of the world to a completely new world and coaching team. But Alina needs no excuse. She is not known for being incredibly consistent like Evgenia or for being ready early in the season. Even already at the grand prix series she usually makes a couples of mistakes.

I think she is safe this season at least, she's still a favorite and she's known for being incredibly consistent. It's only next season that you'll have to start worrying when some of the super juniors go turn senior. Tbh that is what i am waiting to see. will the juniors stay healthy and will any of the current senior even qualify for worlds when the younger girls turn senior?

that's a scary thought :slink:

It's about time we get a popcorn-worthy rivalry going. The last time we had it was in the days of Kim-Asada. Prepare yourself for the fanwars.

Alina's excuse is that she has much more difficult program. Both in jumping and transitions department. There so much going on in terms of footwork. Zhenya's program in it's current state is essentially a jump layout.

Omg pleaso no. The Kim - Asada fan wars were so horrible. You could not enjoy any of their performances without their fans throwing threats around at each other. I love both Zhenya and Alina and hope people can keep their malicious comments together for both.

Agreed, no fan wars! I like both, though prefer Alina a bit more. I would never want to see Evgenia fail or have a bad skate. I suspect most fans of either lady also likes the other, just to a lesser degree. Both girls/ladies had busy summers with lots of changes. Evgenia moved halfway across the world and had to adjust to a new coaching team. Alina was busy with lots of publicity after her OGM, taking care of a new dog-celebrity, and performing in Japan. Neither lady has made any excuses for their performances and it’s just a test skate. Let’s wish them the best and see what happens. Personally, I love that there is currently no clear front runner after 3 years of dominance by Medvedeva.

:laugh2: at all the folks who are supposedly “worried” about Zhenya.

David Wilson’s choreo has carried many a skater to medals, with or without national competition (Yuzu has no national competition  I’m sure Shoma would love to hear that). I vastly prefer what David has done for Zhenya as opposed to skipping around the ice for no reason, open mouth miming and the other God awful moves Zhenya was given in the past. She is better than that, and David Wilson is recognizing it.

Will the programs be refined? Of course, I would expect nothing less for all these programs. Do I have any idea how it will be received by judges? Not really.

But Orser and Wilson don’t know what they are doing or how to support Zhenya?

One more proof that Medvedeva is lying way too much. She says that she decided to change a coach right after her free program at Olympics. If you remember, there was a video on the same channel, recorded weeks after Olympics, where she was saying in the face of camera that she will stay with Eteri for sure.

I'm sure people will invent something to defend her nonetheless..

Is there any emoji on GS that is falling asleep? Because I think that‘s the most appropriate reaction to this post.

Same same same. This is sufficient thanks a lot. I‘ll be putting this cute little guy: :bed: under every post of such a kind I see.

:bed: and

Which if I read one more time about how Zhenya hasn’t fixed flutzes and she’ll only win if judges don’t call flutzes, and edges this and flutzes that in all things....

Because those clueless Canadian coaches who have never won any World or Olympic medals and certainly have never won successive Olympic gold medals with the same skater really just don’t know what they’re doing and ya de ya dee ya dee

:bed:

ETA: I see @lavenderblossom had the same post while I was writing mine, great minds and all that;)

The second one, I feel, is even more obvious and just not... as nice as this one: :bed: This  just seems a bit more provocative.

And I agree completely with your post. I know I‘m actually joking but some part of me is feeling like I‘m not. At some point it‘s really tiring to read the same thing over and over again. And I‘m not talking about criticism of the choreograpy. That‘s fine, I said myself that I‘m not sold on the FS yet. I mean the endless screams of “FLUTZ!“ and ”Medvedeva is an evil, evil, EVIL liar. You listen? There is PROOF. PROOF! Arrest her now!“

I mean.... aren‘t these people getting tired?

Who says I’m not worried about Alina

I did say that I agreed with those who were suggesting the feild in Russia was wide open. Not that only Zhenya’s standing could be in jeopardy. I was hoping that would suggest bit of uncertainty across the entire feild.

I don’t find it unreasonable to acknowledge that there is room for discussion on her condition which some perceive as not fully prepared for a major event in Russian Ladies Skating. Forgetting opening choreography is a pretty big oopsy IMO. Opinions can differ though and that’s fine.

I agree with this point. I‘m also worried about Zhenya and Alina, of course I am, I guess that‘s the duty as a fan. And I have no problem with people saying that they are worried or that the program needs more transitions, that‘s okay. I actually agree with that and hope Brian is indeed considering this. Judges just love transitions. But I feel like this flutz thing and other parts of this discussion about Medvedeva... are just unnecessary. I think every skating fan knows that she‘s flutzing now, we don‘t need people to talk about it constantly and how she‘s being unfair for adding them. Enough is enough at one point.

The flutz issue has been ongoing and will never go away. I don’t worry much about Flutz calls or lip calls. It doesn’t even factor into my feelings as a fan. That ship has sailed long ago so I let the flutz police handle it. Called or uncalled I don’t care. I think the penalties are overly harsh when called so if they miss a few I’m unaffected. Robin Hood syndrome ? If they call them it is what it is and I move on ;)

Zhenya’s loyal fans ought to have become accustomed to this relentless noise by now. There are some that pretty much obsess over edge calls and Lutz jump in general. Me...I’m like :handw:
