2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

All three are 14 aren't they?

That's right, I forgot about that. I suppose Vasilieva is trying to get to both senior and junior nationals, whereas Kostyuk isn't automatically qualified to junior nationals and it would make more sense for her to try and qualify there since she has a better chance than at senior nationals. I'm not sure why Sinitsyna isn't skating senior. Maybe Panova isn't planning to take anyone to senior nationals - only Sinitsyna would even be old enough.

Yes, she's 14 so she's old enough to compete as a senior domestically.

Ohh thats good! I am wondering if her JGP spot may be on the line. I was thinking more about Gubanova vs Vasilieva for the spot I think it is best to stay up. So even if Gubanova has a couple of URs I hate to say this but sometimes they aren't called for certain skaters internationally. But a fall is very visible. One fall cost Sinitsyna the medal and her second spot. Gubanova has great SS and IN, she will be given the PCS over Nana Araki and Yelim Kim. I would be less worried for her in Ostrava than Vasilieva. Of course they can switch Vasilieva out for Tarusina or Kanysheva in Ostrava and solve it that way.

I will be rooting for Vasilieva this weekend and I want her to lay down a performance that leaves us all saying give that girl the spot!!!

(ok maybe not in Ostrava to keep my anxiety at bay lol, but still a spot).

It's not really about Eteri turning her attention to the juniors more than Alina. Simply put, the competition is tough within their group and their country, and those most deserving will get further, as it should be. I'm sure they all get attention within the group, but those who are better will go to international competition, giving you the impression that Eteri "focuses" more on them; but that's not it, or at least we wouldn't know. But the fact that she is olympic champion, or her age, wouldn't matter, it's based on merit. None of the skaters can rely on their previous accomplishments, because the others would not have had the same opportunities; they can only compare what they do in the present. It sucks that there is so much talent and only 3 spots for big competitions, but that is sport and ladies figure skating is very popular Russia.

i wonder if eteri ever tried to get her to train 3A or quads and she wasn't successful, or if she just didn't want to do them. I just find it a little puzzling that the juniors right behind her are drilling these jumps, where she (to my knowledge at least, correct me if i'm wrong) hasn't trained them. it would have given her an even bigger edge over evgenia last season and next year when many more ladies will be competing with these jumps.

a very simple explanation is that Alina is going through a lot of stuff right now and, simply put, has other priorities over training quads / 3A. For example, dealing with post-olympic pressures or growth issues.

Am I correct when I say I thought Alina had Osgood Schlatter disease? I don’t think she’ll ever train quads with that kind of setback.

I don't think she's had that...
I just don't think she quite has the right combo of height and snap for it. If you watch Sasha's 3Lz-3Lo, she just pops back up into the -3Lo, versus Alina who has more of a fluid connection between the the jumps. I like both of those ways to do 3Lz-3Lo but I think that the way Sasha does it means that she has a better ability to up her rotation speed, which is needed for quads.

i totally understand that now, but i'm referring back to when she was a junior, or newly senior.

Simply put, just about anyone can't simply go and start learning quads(Or even 3As). There are some requirements. I don't think that Alina has either the height or the rotation speed required.

well hopefully she and her coaches are prepping to start training them because she can't bank on all of the juniors losing those jumps when they turn senior and if skill-wise everyone stays the exact way they are right now and teams were being picked for Worlds and the Olympics - she most likely is not in the top 3. It reminds me a bit of Dick Button's commentary from Todd Eldredge's FS at nationals prior to the SLC games, he said that Todd would have to come to grips with doing a quad if he wanted an Olympic gold medal - if Russian ladies figure skating continues down its current path, all the Russian ladies are going to have to come to grips with needing a quad and/or a 3a.

Here's a link to the Dick Button commentary (I have it saved as it's 1 of my favorite Todd Eldredge performances) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lwar2cUnbJU&list=PLnAASBAJ4l-ipHwEaDTfxUQSsFXLHFXtl&index=16

I stand corrected then.

And its not like test skates are a competition. Skaters do not get any scores, there are no medals of any sort.
It is mor of a show, if anything.

As mentioned earlier, the thread was moved back to the Edge and the second thread in the Comp forum was merged with it.

Sometimes, we might fantasize about some completely unrealistic things as "what if?"-scenarios. And I definitely wasn't expecting something like this to even be possible. But just so it happens that as I was doing some of my routine skater checks to kill some time, I noticed this page on sportvokrug:
https://www.sportvokrug.ru/fs/athletes/15599/

And I literally couldn't believe my eyes! When has Davydov even coached 6-year-olds? And not just any 6-year-old but THIS 6-year-old? Her parents actually moved to Moscow just for this? This removes so many potential doubts... I can't even believe it. Going from training in a completely obscure club in Voronezh of all places to who I consider the second-best coach for ladies in Russia at the age of 6...

Davydov is training younger children too apparently. Katya Gubanova (Dec 2010 birthday) is also training with Davydov now her sister changed to Buyanova and the whole family moved from St. Petersburg to Moscow.

I’d like to take a minute to post some vintage Radionova just in case some of the newer posters aren’t familiar with some of her early work.
