2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

With her skate Alina has shown who is the boss. Some idiots on sports.ru said she decided to skip Nepela because she was scared of Kihira. LOL - that's the case where these three letters are absolutely appropriate.

She looked really strong this week. I hope she can maintain this form because it will make for an exciting season.

What about calling them by last name? Is that considered rude?

I would say last name is fine (it is fairly common to refer to people by last name in Russia).
First name is also fine, because the girls are much younger than we are.
The regular short forms, such as Sasha or Zhenya are also fine, because we love them.
Whatever pet names skaters released for fans also ok (for example Lenok for Radionova).

Stuff like Alinka, Zhenechka and so on, or using patronimics is tricky, so better to avoid just in case unless the skater made 100% clear it is fine.

Growing 7 centimeters or 3 inches in less than a year and still keeping your game in figure skating is remarkable.

yep, and its actually visible how much she changed.
Last year, she was a teenage girl. This year, she looks like a young woman already.

Alina was absolutely wonderful. Very impressed with that performance.
She was Carmen. Fabulous skate!
her interpretation changes with the music. really Beautiful.

Not only her growth, but full on puberty, and yet, she looks stronger than ever. Very impressive.

Speak for yourself

Alina was amazing today, keeping her form. Alina was never as consistent as Evgenia was at Evgenia's peak though. But Evgenia on the other hand has completely lost her style and elements. It is hard to imagine that evgenia is so far away from Alina.

Recap of the season so far:

203.50 Alena Kostornaya

Evgenia decided to change her way, to change her style. Lets wait some years and see what she will be able to achieve. But currently Evgenia obviously is not at the same level as Alina is.

In some years, Trusova, Shcherbakova and Kostornaia will be senior.
All 3 are better than Zhenya, and there are only 3 spots for worlds and euros. Sad but true.

She probably feels the physical differences but is making it work with her skating.

Right now I think Anna is still a question mark, and we don't know for sure whether the other three will be in their best shape by the time of the next Olympics.
Sasha's technical content is unbeatable, but Alena needs to have a 3A to have an advantage over Alina.

Out of those 5, Zhenya is the most debatable so far.
Alina is a question mark (that holds the current WR), but clean Alina beats clean Zhenya.
The other 3, even if lose the quads, still have all the goods to beat a clean Zhenya.
if one of them fails, that still leaves 3 competing for the top spots.

Idk. I except Alena will be the next Kostner. As we've seen this weekend, no matter how badly she skates those PC's are going to go above and beyond what anybody else can produce. And despite a popped 2A she is far more consistent than any of the others. She will be a right place, right time skater. She will win because the others will mess up. Not every competition but they will mess up somewhere along the line and she will be right there ready to take gold when that happens. And I think that is where her value to RUS Fed will come from. She will be their plan B for a lot of competitions. If Sasha or Alina screw up we know Alena will be there to take gold.

It would be her coaches who decide not Alina. I wouldn't be surprised if Eteri decided to increase Alina's chances of getting a win on her first outing to build her confidence after her bad skate at worlds and rocky test skates. It could have been a strategy, but we will never know though!

I agree. I was dubious of the “paperwork” argument and think her coaches wanted to assure a win for her confidence starting out the season. And it paid off. She just demonstrated her dominance and what’s she’s capable of without question. I’m so happy for Alina and I hope this positive momentum carries her through the season.

It would be a very dumb strategy and a waste of Alina's training time to have her get all dressed up with her bags only to take an Instagram photo posting a sarcastic comment about not making it to competition instead of claiming she was not feeling well or boot issues. And also to have a random custom's officer's name released. And I'm sure Diana would be been very happy to have her mother decide to move Alina's event to one that coincides with JGP Ostrava so that she couldn't attend with her daughter. But hey, whatever conspiracy floats your boat.
