2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Haha, don’t worry, in 20 years CDs WILL make a comeback with hipsters and their Sony walkmans who will wax poetic about the unique “sound character” of the CD as they spend their days perusing independent CD shops. :yahoo:

I went to a used music store today and almost bought a Tom Waits CD :slink:

I dont see that happening really, because wild cards would only benefit the feds that actually have a lot of skaters.
For example, right now, adding lets say 2-3 extra russian ladies to the worlds mix will likely drop most of the other skaters a few placements. Feds wont be happy. Nobody would vote for such thing except for russia and japan =(
Canada had this issue in both dance and pairs last quadrennial. Many younger dance teams retired because they saw no prospects of getting berths. I think they could see the benefits.

But as I said above, it would need to be balanced with the prospect of smaller federations skaters earnings extra spots at Nebelhorn or another CS to get buy in.

Which would make a much bigger roster for the SPs at Worlds, and would put pressure to increase the number of participants in the free.

That could get pretty confusing/excessive. You’d probably end up with 6 Russian girls at Euro and 5-6 at Worlds every year.

Except the last two years for worlds. Russian ladies would have only gained one extra spot in 2017 and none in 2018. Both Japan and Canada would have gained more over the past two years.

Aslo have Russian ladies swept a worlds podium before??

The whole citizenship thing, the athlete does what she/he thinks is best for them.

If I was Radionova, for instance, I would definitely consider switching countries and continue to train in Russia. I'm surprised not more athletes do this (in particular in figure skating and rhythmic gymnastics).

It's not like Radionova would take someone else's spot, she could compete to have 2 spots for that country.

Because money.
You got to pay for coaching. You got to move to a different country and pay to live there. Where the FS is not state funded, so you got to pay for that much more than in Russia too.

You don't have to move to a different country.

And I'm sure some sort of agreement can be arranged regarding finance.

I like this idea.

A select number of Wild Card spots in non-Olympic years to be determined after Europeans and 4CC would be exciting, and would incent skaters and federations to keep improving their depth through the season.

I'm getting a bit off topic, but I'm also wondering there would be more appetite for this if it were balanced by the opportunity for smaller federation skaters to get extra spots at Worlds, Europeans and 4CC at Nebelhorn as there is for the Olympic Games.

Yes, bigger overall ISU events are more expensive, but we've also seeing a wave of new countries in Asia that are gaining interest in the sport. And fans in these countries may support Russian ladies not just their own.

I would maybe do the following - the country who hosts the even (worlds, euros or 4cc) gets 3 invites in each discipline. They are then free to invite any of the senior B medalists for those spots. This choice will only be made after all the entires are announced.
This way, big fed cannot play it smart by sending their top skaters to earn spot for themselves, and then using the 3 spots on somebody else.
Also, rewards the country who hosts the competition, since they can get some skaters of their liking to increase ticket sales.

In principle, I like the idea, but in practice there will be a lot of accusations of "they only invited skater A because they are no threat to host's skaters ! They should have invited skater B who won bronze in junior world last year."

Well, some clear pool being senior B winners should be fine imho.
But there always will be stink, whoever and however we chose.

^^ and add there instead Radionova for Estonia

We accept! But in all honesty, ours would not be an easy citizenship to get. Natalia Zabijako changed countries from Estonia to Russia in part because none of her Russian partners were able to get the citizenship.

Well, if someone is determined enough - A2 language category is not that difficult, consitution test also.
I guess the bigger problem is that we are not allowed dual citizenship.

P.S. Hi to all the Estonians of GoldenSkate :)

True. Your idea of having the host choose, is nice because it allows them to choose people who draw a crowd or have some other special reason to be chosen. I would like it if this system was set up and someone like Anna Pogorilaya would be invited in a few years, if she takes a break now from FS to focus on healing only. Or someone like Anastasia Gubanova, who now seems to get lost in her domestic competition, but not long ago was a top junior.

Or, let's say, Patrick Chan wants to do a four continents if it's in Canada or Yulia wants to skate two beautiful programs without the pressure of a full competitive season.

Hi to all Estonians from me too! Happy to see quite a few of us here, one of the reasons I published my country flag was the wish to see if there are more Estonians here [emoji5]

On other topic - can’t wait for this weeks JGP! Hope Tarakanova brings home the gold!
