2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Agreed.
But Panenkova is Tsareva’s not Buyanova’s
Oh, whoops. :scratch2:

To don't count the atrocious choreography from Radionova's short program. Which coach would approve that? I can understand that a young lady has not polished her taste yet (or might think that she looks sexy/modern/progressive), but a coach should know better!
Programs aren't Buianova's strongest suit... I think that Eteri's girls have the best programs but Davydov, Turenko also have pretty good taste. Then there are coaches like Panova and Buianova on the other end of the spectrum.

I thought S. Panova isnt author of choreography for her best girls. And moreover, choreograph can work only with that what skater already can deliver. If there is narrow pool of jumps and elements (like in Radionova case) its imposible to build good choreo on that.

I saw somewhere that Vera Arutyunyan was the choreographer of Alena Kanysheva’s free program?? Correct me if I’m wrong

Yes, she confirmed during an interview few months ago.

Ilona Protasenia is usually listed as their choreographer but they do like to work with Raf's wife and also Nadia Kanaeva for the programs. This season though, they didn't have much time so only Vera Arutyunyan went to Moscow and made a program for Kanysheva, the others kept the same programs as last season (except Kostyuk has a new free)

I am sorry to see Elena has withdrawn, I was looking forward to seeing her skate (I will be at SA). I really feel for her- I feel badly for skaters who have a strong debut season and are then unable to have the same success afterwards. It must be very frustrating. I'm not sure what she needs to really find her voice in skating again. :(

Every single one of Buianova's students - old or new - are doing terribly this season.

Radionova's been the worst, I'd say. But Sotskova, Tsurskaya, Panenkova have been in alarming condition. Gubanova might even have performed the best out of all her students, yet even she's done very poorly for her own standards.

It'd have to be quite a coincidence for all of these skaters to be under the same coach and for the coach to not have a part to play in this.

Yes, but Panenkova is with Tsareva, but she got 40-something in her SP at Cup of Russia stage 2 (I think 46 or 48) which was pretty shocking as her best was 66.65 with Eteri last year. This happens to many who leave Eteri, but Dasha seems pretty motivated to do better which is good (I think Cup of Russia was just unfortunate for her as she had 2 falls in SP and I’ve seen videos of her doing 3lz+3lo in training) as many of these girls who begin to crumble seem to have lost motivation as the main cause

Oh no, Lena! It‘s just so frustrating at this point. I feel like even though she‘s been struggling since last year, she still had potential. But unfortunately Buyanova hasn‘t been able to help her so far. :(

For now, I‘m hoping for Sima to get the spot at SA, she’d really deserve it, she‘s working so hard!!

And because I haven‘t done this yet: Congrats to our five ladies in the JGPF and Anna Tarusina with a honorable mention as the first alternate who skated really well in both of her assignments! A few thoughts on each of them:

Sasha: Killer. While I still prefer artistry to quads, I can‘t deny she‘s throwing them down like crazy. And she‘s really developing in other aspects, too. Her spins are SO MUCH BETTER than last year, it‘s not even funny. She‘s very young, so she‘ll mature a bit in her artistry but so far she‘s interpreting the programs she‘s given really well. They suit her. Might not be my favourite ones but they‘re certainly good, exciting programs even and she‘s executing them truly brilliantly. Congrats!

I hope she‘s feeling better now or at least gets some time to rest. She really deserves it and more than that, her body needs it desperately! I know this event was important and Tiny Boss wouldn‘t have missed it for anything but I still can‘t help but worry. Skating is a strain on the body (especially if you‘re doing quads!!) and she‘s been sick already. That‘s not healthy at all and could lead to some serious problems. I know skaters - any athletes - have done that before skating with illness and injury and stuff but she‘s so young and I just want her to be healthy. Get in bed, drink tea, sleep a lot and dream about quads, Sasha! You‘ve earned a rest!

Alena Kostornaya: She‘s an angel. Even with that last a bit unfortunate competition - not feeling well and breaking her finger - she‘s just such a joy to watch. Doesn’t matter whether there‘s a 3A or not, her jumps are just high, beautiful and so well executed. Good spins, incredibly skating skills, mature interpretation. Is there anything she can‘t do? She‘s definitely won my heart over. Favourite junior this season.

But: Same as for Sasha. Take care of your finger. I know a broken finger won‘t stop a Alena Kostornaya from training but be careful. We want all girls healthy and fit at JGPF! :)

Anna Shcherbakova: Another favourite. While Alena has won my heart over, in no way could I deny her brilliance. Quad Lutz. And a stunning musicality and interpretation, wonderful spins ... how could you top that? She needs to be a bit more consistent but I‘m sure she‘ll manage. Considering that she‘s been off ice most of last season, it‘s already insane what she‘s pulling off.

Nastya: So powerful. I love her genuine emotions. I love that she‘s wild in her skating. Her jumps sometimes seem a bit unfinished as does her skating but for me that‘s the most intriguing thing about her. She stands out because she‘s passionate and free. If she really intends to add a quad by the end of the season, it will be even more interesting to watch her.

Alena Kanysheva: She‘s a princess on ice. Such a distinctive style. Elegant, calm yet really powerful. She handled the pressure really well at her last JGP, knowing her spot at the final was at stake. While it wasn‘t as brilliant as her FS in Linz, she didn‘t fall and only had a slight wobble on a spin and a step-out. Her skating skills are wonderful. Deserved spot for the final!!

Honorable mention: Anna Tarusina. While I personally don‘t enjoy her skating too much, I have to appreciate her consistency and how much she wants it. She‘s so determined and won two silvers! It was so close and honestly, even if you aren‘t her fan, it‘s sad to see because she just skated really well in both events and still can‘t go to the final... I like her commitment. She loves what she does and that‘s great. Hopefully she‘ll get that spot in the final next year!

Sorry to hear about Lena, but I think her out of shape could be the cause of this injury.

I hope Eunsoo gets another GP.

After seeing videos posted in Plushenko academy thread, I think he can be a great artistic coach.

Just look at how he demonstrates Tarakanov the feeling of the program... The way he gets a little too close to her, though a little uncomfortable, is an excellent to tell her she needs to be a little more seductive for that music. I forgot how expressive he can be.
And he definitely knows how to jump. Now I think he could be the number 2 Russian coach after Eteri.

If I were Russia I would advocate for the challenger series to be extended past January(and perhaps for there to be a challenger series final restricted to those who did best on the challenger series but did not make the grand prix final... but this is not necessary). The reason being is that many of the skaters who fail to make worlds are going through struggles and I think the extra long wait time until the next season is not really helpful... it exacerbates whatever problems they are having with boredom.

He's got such great movement. Love it! I wish more students would go to him.

Tarakanova is showing tons of potential. I think she’s taking on a leadership role there too. If they can keep her tech in order and give her an alternative style to what Eteri’s kids bring it could actually help her to stand out a bit. I hope this relationship lasts for a while. It could be beneficial for both. It would be nice to see her peak during the 2022 season. Just sayin’

I also think the two programs she has this season are very good choice. Both can show her passion, but in a slight different way from her two programs last year.
This is the right type of "challenge" of style a skater needs, somewhat new but not completely different. Many people are disappointed that she didn't skate to Believer, but I think the rock Moonlight Santa is even better. It's full of tension and passion in a more subtle way.
