2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

After this competition, Eteri should modify her strategy. It seems judges don't care much about difficulty entries but ready to award one with good height, distance and flow. The win of Alena is a good message for her that total package is as important as difficult jumps.

I still can't believe that Alena won. I'm so happy for her 💙 With more appropriate PCS she could very well be the national champion.

I hurt my heart seeing Anna and Sasha struggle with their quads. Especially Anna's falls looked rough. Sasha was a beast and pulled a 4T after the 2 Lutzes :D But I am happy at least that Anna could smile in the K&C again and that Daniil cheered her up.

They hammered her with that low PCs... I do think that Kanysheva deserves to be 3rd, especially after holding on to the position after the SP and FS but Tarakanova's score is just way too low for what she delivered. I love also Anna S but they gave her 60 PCS with 2 falls and Nastya got 57 PCS for a clean program with superior skating skills...and she does transitions in and out of her jumps! :slink:

Agreed, I was really shocked at how low Nastya’s score was

This has proved to be such a wonderful night for me and for those lovely ladies! I am so happy I can fly! It’s super late but I just have to share my thoughts. I had something to say after every skater but I decided to not spam and just write one post in the end :D

Sofia Samodurova – I am happy that she keeps skating clean this season so far. Congratulations on that!

Alina – I was worried about the second Lutz combination after she popped the toeloop, but she didn’t and that’s great. Sorry to hear about the TV cable thing, but mad respect for not giving up and winning the silver medal!

Liza – Those PCS!!!!!!!! Feels bad man… It’s so unfair. I would definitely have her over Alina in the free. Obviously still 3rd overall, but all the jumps except the 3A were so good and she sold the program so well that I think it’s really unfair. She’s won my quirky heart this season and she’s the one bringing lots of fun to competitions for me. As I said before, my favourite performance of the night.

Anna Scherbakova vs Trusova – although I’m used to seeing Sasha fall on her quads since last year, it looked so displeasing this time like never before for me, and because of that this is the first time Anna won me over and for once I thought “ah, so maybe this is why people like her so much”. I wish them both many more quads in the future, congratulations to Sasha on winning the silver medal and Anna – just keep going forward!

Alena Kanysheva – I liked her skating, but she’s a new skater for me and so far I’m not very impressed. I think I’m just not used to her enough. Congratulations on the bronze medal!

Anastasia Tarakanova – ever since seeing her for the first time last year at the GPF, she’s won my fight heart. I’m really drawn to get fierce competitive side. Her jumps are so good, so high, she’s very impressive to me. I really like her personality. I think her score should’ve been higher though. She may not be skating to Believer, but I believe in her and I wish her to finally get that spot for junior worlds!

Alena Kostornaia – I am speechless. She’s always been the most mature skater out of this crop of Russian juniors, but tonight’s performance was just something else. I’m not talking about the jumps, those we’ve seen her do even better (although they were still great). She’s just so refined, none of her movements are rushed and unfinished even despite there being a ton of different positions, and they’re definitely better than before. I noticed that she holds the positions longer and the effect that has on the program is superb. Had she competed with the seniors today, I believe she would’ve won the silver medal. I cannot describe how happy I am that she won.

Sorry I deleted my original post! I felt it had a negative/dismissive tone and decided to reword it! But yes, Liza may very well retire and if thats the case anyone below her would be bumped up a spot (similarly if one of 3A decided to stay junior).

Honestly I don't know what will happen with Russian GP assignments next year. Their depth in ladies is really beginning to break the system.
everyone that place in top 24 SB and skate in senior is guaranteed 1 GP spot. So even if Gubanova is the 10th skater, the fact that she's still in top 24 so she will be guaranteed 1. She mightnot get 2nd GP because the othe above her probably is the priority, but she still guaranteed 1. in the rules there is no saying that if you are 10th skater from the country then you are alternate or such. Usually top 24 automatically got 2 GP because its never happened that there is more than 9 skater that skate in senior from same country place in top 24 SB. But now there is more than 9 but spot still only 18 max so someone will get only 1 GP, as simple as that

I really hope Anya can get her quads to be consistent. This result at the JGPF isn’t looking very good for her chances to go to Jr Worlds, and more importantly, the senior level next year. A good podium placement at Jr RusNats is the only way for her to redeem herself.

Sasha’s quad toe is actually so consistent. Hopefully she’ll get the lutzes to be consistent too.

I enjoyed Kostornaia's performances. Daniil's choreography can be incoherent but Kostornaia makes it work with her relative superior artistry, skating skills, and flow compared to Trusova. Judges are saying that Trusova should work on her other aspects of skating, instead of focusing on putting in so many quads, which were messy and hard to watch today. Once the jumps were unsuccessful, there was not much there in Trusova's program to enjoy.

Nice extensions on landings is still appreciated to this day and glad to see Alena displays those instead of just aiming to get as many rotations in as possible.

You're wrong, Kihira's victory is the best sign that technique is everything, look at his PCS, he has in interpretation 1 point above Kostornaia and half a point from Miyahara. The victory of Kostornaia only warns the supremacy absolute of Kihira in the following season.

So Alena KOSTORNAIA just won JPGF with clean skate over Trusova. I am happy about that. As much as i was excited about QUADZZZZZ, when the multiple quads program comes with falls and messy landings.... clean, full package program should win. (also, another horrible fall from Trusova. I am starting to get worried here, not just for her skating future, but for her walking without pain future).

Alena was stunning today and I hope this boosts her confidence.

Seeing the Anna SHCHERBAKOVA placement... i am thinking thar it might not be the "3A" pushing out everybody next year.

I think Anna should stay in juniors a bit longer than others. To get a bit more muscles to her core and better physical conditioning. She had a rough meet this GPF. :( I believe in her. So, yeah, no "perfect 3A" team yet. :)

I think a second year in juniors would do Anna good, mentally and physically. She still is so tiny.

Kostornaia may well be the first Russian skater I've watched who I've been wowed by. To think her clean skate only won the FP by 1 point is, for me, a travesty. Her flow, skating skills, innate musicality and almost everything about her skating is quality in the same way messy quads are not. She was superior to everyone else today.

Is it really necessary to take your personal preferences and use them to take shots at some of people’s favorites athletes in this thread. Always stirring the drama pot in here

Yes. She is slightly behind in development comparing to other Russians. But that is only a matter of time. She will get there. She is not catching up, she is just delaying her rise. We wait. The whole world will wait.;)

I think we're on the same page on this. But careful, we don't want to be accused of stirring the pot just because of our preferences ;).

Actually I think Yuzuru started it. Interesting imagery though. Evgenia is like a cat amongst all these puppies.

When will entries for Russian nationals be released? I cannot wait for it. Going to be even more exciting than the GPF!

I don't understand how Kostornaia is SO GOOD. WHERE did she learn her basics? The musicality must be something she's born with.
