2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Once again, it is not a confidence or mental thing for Evgenia. I don't know how many times she needs to mess up before you realize that she just doesn't have the same consistency and feel with her new technique yet--it's not a matter of nerves at all, it is about practice and consistency. She fell on the end of a majorly underrotated combo during her short program rehearsal, and also had a popped combo in practice.More telling is that she didn't try any of her three jump combos in practice that she used to do with her eyes closed. She's not skating cleanly in practice and it is getting magnified in competition. It is not about pressure at all.

No, even if Medvedeva skates clean, she doesn't deserve the third spot.

She needed to WOW everyone in Russia, and this was the worst SP she did all season. What reason does she have to get the third spot? Take the year off, get your s*** together and come back next year. It's been disappointing and I'm a huge Medvedeva fan, but this was just.....stupid! She's malfunctioned at ALL her competitions and just when she needed to deliver, she performs even worse.

This.

Whatever strategy Orser is using, it's not working, and if he doesn't realise it after 6 months.....

He's seriously damaged her reputation, and then I don't get why he's going in the media and saying crap like "if Zhenya skates clean she will win nationals"

Um really? She hasn't even scored over 65 in a short program....

I love Alina. She comes across as a very sweet pleasant girl. Very mature for her 16 years. I also enjoy watching her skate. She is far above most other skaters as far as I am concerned. It disgusts me when someone feels that is OK to continually ridicule someone because they have some kind of vendetta. She has worked very hard and deserves every medal she has gotten.

I agree. I read this on twitter today and it kind of summed it up for me -

Alina Zagitova makes a mistake in her program
Everyone: Her career is over! Overscored!!
Evgenia Medvedeva makes a mistake in her program
Everyone: She just needs time.

You make it sound like it's easy. She's been injured and those injuries are lingering, I think even if she had remained with Eteri she wouldn't have had the greatest season. If anything Eteri's method of constant practicing would only make those injuries worse, now it's possible that perhaps if she had remained they would have come up with some different ways for Zhenya to train, but it seems unlikely.

What I find bizarre is so many people are acting like Zhenya is doing this on purpose or something? I'm pretty sure underperforming isn't her idea of a good time and I believe she's training as hard as she can without making her injuries worse.

It's a shame she didn't feel she could take the season off, but what's done is done. I hope she doesn't give up!

I think it's largely correct that her injuries are being underestimated by the public and undercommunicated by her team. I'm very interested in how the alternate universe where she stayed with Eteri this season would have gone. It was clear last season that there were issues. Some aspects of how things have gone this season were easily predicted. The mental troubles and loss of focus in competition were less so.

She should have at least taken the GP circuit off, but she wanted to fight through the changes. It's unfortunate because the preparation for it and the feedback they got seemed to distract them from what could have been a focused, private training plan for the summer and fall. Nevertheless, what's done is done, and this season has ended up meaning much more than it reasonably should mean when there are so many changes to make. It was just good to see her looking more present and at ease compared to the previous competitions. It was the first time I actually had a sense that she's okay with being a bit more patient moving forward.

Orser giving her a discount? I think the rate he charges (as far as I know) is reasonable considering the caliber of coach that he is.

He honestly doesn’t need Zhenya for his ‘reputation’

$110 per hour and he takes no percentage of their competition winnings.

"Home cooking" caused those landed jumps to be called clean. Have a look at the replay, Alina's 3Lo is <, her blade touches the ice at around the 135 degree mark and completes the rest of the rotation on the ice.

If the tech panel is strict, she would likely finish third if Liza and Rika both have clean performances with a 3A.

Actually, I only see about 85 degree underrotation, which isn't an underrotation.

Liza came back. Mirai came back. Why can't Medvedeva?

Well the US ladies are like a barren wasteland so a comeback for Mirai was easier as there weren't many alternatives. Liza's problems seem mainly mental and physical (has she had injuries?). Plus her jump technique has always been sound (one of the best in the game) so she rarely has to worry about that type of thing when edges and rotations are scrutinized.

Evgenia can definitely make a comeback but it feels like her mountain to climb is very high. Plus with Orser claiming it will take some two years for the results to properly show people wonder if that's too slow and not fast enough with all these wonder babies becoming age eligible next year. If she doesn't show the improvements in competition next season she runs the risk of being left in the dust as the wonder babies take their positions as Russia's Olympic gold medal hopefuls. As Evgenia already knows the judges are very fickle and will dump you fast for the next big thing if given the opportunity. And don't forget even in Korea as Alina and Evgenia were standing 1-2 on the podium, and the anthem had yet to finish, people were already saying it would be a struggle for them to to remain the full cycle and make the 2022 Olympics against the onslaught of girls coming up. And that was before Evgenia changed coaches and started retooling the jumps! It's not impossible but it won't be easy and the path to get there won't be so clear

There was an interview where Serafima said Zhenya had a compression fracture in her back, whether it was during the Olympics or after I don’t now. I was surprised that of all people to give information about this injury it was her. She is still experiencing back pain too and was caught on film saying her back hurt after her practice this morning. Looking back, I also wish she took the Grand Prix off so she could be more prepared.

I believe she was already injured by the time she was prepping for ice shows this summer and initiating conversations with Brian, so it could have very well been during the lead-up to the Olympics. It doesn't seem like she ever got time to properly recover given the sacrifices they've made with spins since the beginning of the season.

Med doesn't have two years to get back to competitive form imo. By then, the parade will have passed her by. I really don't understand what has caused her deterioration. Is she suffering from some form of Post Traumatic SD due to what happened at the Olympics?

I agree with you to an extent. I think her and her team need to figure out why she is continuing. Is it to win or is it because she loves to skate and compete? Cause the reality is, the field is changing quickly and a lot of people are going to get left behind. If they are only in it to win, no wonder why she is having confidence issues.

Unfortunately I think many skaters have injuries and lingering pain that we never find out about unless they are forced to reveal it—I.e. it manifests at a public event or there’s obvious signs of injury/taping. There’s simply no way to avoid it with the intense training they do for years and years. Most teams try to keep injuries as mum as possible to avoid speculation/criticism/excuses. Along the same veins I don’t think it does the skater much good to see lots of media coverage or press questions about pain or injuries. I imagine it would only put more doubt into the skater’s head about whether they will be able to recover in time for xyz event.

In your landing screenshot, her entire blade is pretty much on the ice, which even at that angle is borderline already. While rotating, the toe/front of her blade touches the ice first on the landing (before the point in time of your screenshot), followed by the rest of her blade. The degree of underrotation is measured from when the blade first hits the ice, not when it's fully on the ice.

It could also be a case of her Improving her technique and getting her confidence back
in time for the 20-21 season, Right when her young compatriots start struggling with puberty,
Olympics are about timing.

Mao failed to come back

Mao came back to Olympics after taking a loooong time to revamp her technique,
Entering the event as a World medalist and GPF champion, She could just as well
have skated a clean SP in Sochi, She did at worlds a few weeks after when she won another title.
