2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

A year ago, before she was a 'thing'-after junior ladies I think, they asked her the same question and she said she wanted to be like Trusova. This year I saw her on a late night show and she switched it to Kwan. (assuming her agent or her father made her do that,).

Right, this is more politically correct.

Wasn't she just interviewed by Jackie Wong and she said she admired Alena K's skating?

I don't think will be that difficult to russia keep the 3 spots ... yes Zhenya and Zagitova can fall but her PCS will keep her at least in the top 10 .... and sofia will not win but with her consistency she will be in the top 10 ... even if I belive thar the japonese ladies can be very consistent and be in the top 5 or Top 3 they are only 3 ladies... I don't think that the american ladies ( maybe only bradie in her best days) or canadian ladies can beat the russian ladies even in a bad day ...

I’m sorry, Alysia is 13 years old and is allowed to change her mind about who her favorite skater is. She’s also mentioned YuNa Kim as a favorite skater.

Sometimes the simplest explanation (she has a different answer) beats the convoluted explanation (unproven interference from father, agent, the Zamboni driver, whoever).

There is no doubt that Alysia knows who her major competitors will be, and that includes the Russian junior ladies, and there can be no doubt, given their skill level, she does not underestimate them. At. All.

Nothing to see here....:bed:

I am imagining as hard as I can, but somehow it is just not working out that way in my mind's eye. :) In my imagination, I always see Zagitovova somehow managing to snatch 5th with Medvedeva or Samodurova squeaking through with 8th. Maybe even 7th. ;)

Ok. now lets go to Japanese ladies thread and express the opinion of Japanese ladies placing 5th, 7th and 8th at home WC.

Yes, the camera angles were SO bad. My friend who is obsessed with film & photography was watching with me and said she could do a better job [emoji23]

Also, Anya’s falls on 4Lz looked yikes - a shame cause we’ve seen how well she can do it & rotate it.

I think it is natural for a youngster to admire a super-star who is a couple of years older. Then comes the realization that, hey, I will be competing against her in a year or two -- I can't just hang around in awe asking for her autograph.

I remember U.S. skater Jenny Kirk as a junior. She was all about Michelle Kwan. The next year she moved up to seniors and switched to Kristi Yamaguchi (safely out of the way as a pro by that time).

As for Michelle herself, her role model was Tonya Harding. Her coach and choreographer told her she should try to skate like Janet Lynn. Michelle's response, "Who's Janet Lynn?" :)

Hi everyone! I have a lot of favourite moments, and I'll write about it tomorrow because I have a flight in 1h. I also filmed the gala finale until the very end, and I'll upload that too. I think the one thing that left me speechless was Sasha's 4T from a cantilever today!

I'm really looking forward to it!

I don't blame Alyss Liu for looking up to Sasha Alena and Anna. It makes sense. It also makes sense now that she's a star and prodigy in her own right that Liu's favorite is Kwan. ;)

Then comes the realization that, hey, I will be competing against her in a year or two -- I can't just hang around in awe asking for her autograph.

But she won't. She will be able to meet them in a competiton only in Olympic season (because 3A will move up to seniors next season) and only if they wouldn't raise seniors age at next ISU congress which is quite likely that they would.

It makes sense for Liu to say Michelle Kwan instead of the 3A in interviews since 99.9% of the American public has no idea who the 3A are but most have heard of Michelle Kwan. I'm sure she was coached to give this answer. She's 13 so I'm sure her publicist gets the questions beforehand and they decide how best to respond. Its not hard hitting journalism or necessarily her most accurate responses, these are interviews to promote Liu and US figure skating. But I'm sure she is gunning for the 3A and uses their accomplishments as daily motivation.

I still maintain this is overthought.

No one in the US cares if Alysa Liu’s [ETA: corrected, thanks @Oatmella] favorite skater is Michelle Kwan, Sasha Trusova, or Sonja Henie. No one cares enough to coach her on the subject or to give her pre planned answers.
She’s not running a four second 40 in the NFL Combine, no one is giving her answers because it’s not that important

Wow, a week to Worlds with three powerful contenders from the Russian ladies, and we’re talking Alysa Liu?

Her name is Alysa, not Alysia :)

She used to post Q&A’s on her instagram stories - she would name 3A’s (or some combination of them) as her favorite skaters. But I think she has met Michelle Kwan more recently - and has mentioned her in interviews. She appears to have an agent - same as Nathan’s - and I wouldn’t put it beyond the realm of possibility that she has gotten some type of media training.

No matter whether she was coached to name Michelle Kwan as her favorite skater, since she’s aiming for quads and winning JGPs/Junior Worlds, it makes sense that the 3A’s are an inspiration to her.

To those who loves bashing Trusova for lack of artistry/interpretation/performance i.e. unjustified PCS - just watch her gala:

They were able to show that impish nature of a teen girl, joy of life, courage and will for victory perfectly - it's just ideal modern art piece IMO. With deep message behind it. Of course it's staggeringly different of typical snoozy "mature skating" presumably worthy high PCS. But why it always have to be like this? Actually - it shouldn't
