2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

Gracie is a favorite of many and has been recovering from serious health issues.

I don’t think this ‘kind of response’ is all that difficult to understand.

Respecting an athlete’s choice to deal with recovery from a serious illness is far from “coddling”

Whether or not it was the correct choice for Gracie as a competitor, we will see when she competes.

You are so right- people are so quick to discount how tough mental illness can be, and what kind of struggle it can be to get better. Trying to assume what her goals are is not helpful, instead let's hope she is on a trajectory that in the long term will provide her peace of mind and solid health. The process of attempting the comeback and learning what her strengths, limits and weaknesses are is every bit as important as the outcome. At the end of the day, she needs to feel good within herself, not please the rest of us.

Gracie is managing her comeback her way. Why not let her do it, and just wait to see the results? All this demanding to know right now what's going on just seems to me a wee bit infantile.

Can I ask about our novice/junior ladies? I was wondering how they’re doing this season. Names to watch out for are Beverly Zhu and Violeta Ushakova. Right? Beverly won novice nationals and Violeta was 3rd.

Also, there’s one or two ladies in line to take the title at 2019 Junior nationals. Who do u think it’ll be??

Gracie needing to do whatever is right for her has nothing to do with some people here questioning whether, from a competitive standpoint, performing in a GP without having skated in a smaller event anywhere in over a year is a good idea. We all would love to see her skate great, and most of us would still be ok to see her make mistakes if she's attempting a competitive layout. For me, if she were not doing triples in her programs I would not want to see her compete in a GP event. I don't think that would build her confidence or reflect well on her decision making if she couldn't do all the required elements in a senior SP. Having said that, I don't see any possibility that she would compete without attempting triples and I anticipate she will look strong (at least in practice).

Novice names for me right now are Kate Wang and Alena Budko

I think Beverly Zhu has switched to representing China ?

I think we’ve gotten so used to instant gratification and knowing everything via social media that we struggle with not knowing. We know Gracies working, we just haven’t seen the results. We just have have faith in her doing this for herself. I’m sure usfsa has been monitoring her some, but she’s chosen to play things close, and really at this point the wait is nearly over. She might be amazing. She might still be a total work in progress, but this is her chance played on her terms

Everybody wants to manage Gracie's comeback THEIR WAY. Not going to happen. (Sigh) I'm just dreading the brickbats and I-told-you-sos if Gracie doesn't perform the way the armchair coaches think she should.

Yes she has. She's also recovering from an injury. She did a lot of doubles in her last club comp, but she posted herself doing all her triples aside from the loop. Hopefully soon she will start training with the legendary Chen Lu! :cheer:

Yeah, but she's one of the the overseas Chinese chosen to train for Beijing. They want that Team medal badly.

What I mean by “coddling” is how many posters are so quick to do the “respect her privacy and stop speculation guys it’s harmful!!” scolding to other posters who aren’t even doing anything wrong by wondering what kind of shape she is gonna be in after a year plus off. When other US ladies don’t get even half of that kind of concern. I just don’t understand what it is about Gracie that prompts that kind of response out of people.

Gracie was the US's best hope for international results while she was competing - she was the top US star for the 2014 Olympic cycle and until she withdrew last year - and since she took her break we have not had another star with her charisma and all-around excellence to take her place. A lot of skaters have potential to get there - Bradie, Karen, Ting, Alyssa, Starr - but nobody is there yet to take Gracie's place. If we were more like Japan or Russia, with a heavy roster of stars, Gracie probably would have been written off a lot more easily, or people would be tougher in their assessments of her, but people are really hoping she can work her way back to where she was and are trying to stay positive about her chances of doing so - so I think when you see them react negatively to questions about her current status, it is more about being patient and giving her time to come back. People remember Gracie at her best, and her fans know the judges won't coddle her, so they want to be as encouraging as possible and create a welcome climate for her as she regains her strength.

Someone commented earlier in this thread that Violeta had an injury earlier this year. She qualified for her Sectionals so she will be competing in about a week.

Do you think a skater should exhibit some minimal technical standard before competing on the GP? I do. It's not a show or an exhibition. She earned the spot, but not with her skating in the last year.

As I said before, I don't think this will be an issue because I don't believe her team would encourage her to compete without triples or the fitness level to finish a LP. We all know that, even if she's in good shape, the first competition back is going to be tough. I don't think anyone should be unhappy if she isn't at her previous level.

Per this document (https://www.isu.org/docman-document...98-gp-general-announcement-2018-19-final/file)

“Come Back Skaters/Couples” must not fulfill the requirements of the minimum Grand Prix score and would be considered for selection as an Organizing ISU Member Choice. A come back under this clause is allowed only once in their competitive career for any Skater/Couple.

If the ISU wanted comeback (c'mon ISU, comeback is ONE WORD) skaters to exhibit a minimum technical standard before competing on the GP, they would mandate that they do.

Agree that it is highly unlikely that she or her team (or USFS) would be doing this/allowing this if Gracie was in that bad of shape.

I just want Gracie to be happy. And I'm DYING to see what her LP looks like. The suspense for Rostelecom is killing me.

Me too! After listening to her long program music, I just really want to see her perform to it. I miss her skating. And I know she knows what it takes to be competitive.

Top scorers at Junior Regionals: Audrey Shin (who beat Ushakova at North Atlantics) and Emilia Murdock at Central Pacific. Emilia won silver at the Golden Bear in Croatia, right behind JGPFinalist Alina Kanysheva.

well, do we at least know who choreographed Gracie's programs and her musical choices?
