2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

I can't imagine that Gracie would skate at a GP without being able to do the harder triples, especially since her lutz was one of her most consistent jumps. If she were only doing doubles at the moment, the GP would not be appropriate events to compete in.

Agree. I expect Gracie to be at least capable of her more difficult triples if not consistent.

I expect Gracie to be satisfied with however she skates - she knows what she is capable of and we don't. However she skates, I am hoping she is able to anticipate it and cope with it; I would hope that she and her coach and mental health professional(s) are working together on a competitive plan that works best for her, not us.

Does Gracie qualify for any byes to Nationals? If she did have to withdraw from RC, would that pretty much end her season?

If a skater/team completes at a Grand Prix, he/she/team, they are automatically qualified for nationals with a bye. If Gracie withdraws, her season is over because all the qualifiers for US Nationals are completed.

Do withdrawls not get the bye as well? (genuine question)

In any case, Gracie is coming back based on the comeback skater rule/clause. Which she will never be able to use again. It's better to use it and perform poorly than not at all.

Even if she's not at her previous level, it's better than nothing.

I remember Mao was doing planned doubles at her last GP event, and it was unbearable to watch. She was injured and I wished she withdrew. Hope Gracie can at least do or attempt some triples, as long as she does not risk injuring herself by attempting.

By the way, who is her coach now? Does she have a "team" working to address her issues?

We don’t *know* that Gracie was attempting only doubles at Chanps Camp, since, by its very nature, there are no official reports out of Champs Camp. Her coach is Vincent Restencourt out of Ice Works in Aston, PA, and I believe Pasha Filchenkov of the same rink may have been assisting him.

Of course, our only concern who may be assisting Gracie for skating; I’m not sure if she is working with anyone else out of that rink.

There were reports in August that gracie was doing triples at champs camp just not in programs. She could do triples but was only successful about half the time. And those reports were from 3-4 months ago. I’m sure that regardless of her performance in Russia that Gracie has been working on getting her jumps consistent. It was also said at the time that her jumps still were high and nice jumps, just she wasn’t solid on all of her jumps. I think if she was going to withdraw, she already would have. I think she’s going to be there and skate. And she might not place high, but this is her only chance to come back and she doesn’t want to regret not trying.

Also agree about Gracie. I hope she has no planned doubles minus 2a but I am not sure of the current state of her triples. I seriously doubt she will withdraw though for an array of reasons.

agree with this...if she's really serious about this comeback she HAS to at least step foot on the ice here to compete at nationals and in turn be eligible for 4CC + worlds spots. if not she might as well just wait until next season.

It's not like she's hogging a GP spot for some other deserving U.S. skater. There aren't any. So I would literally prefer that she skate and not attempt any jumps than withdraw. Then at least she qualifies for Nationals. If she is not consistent atm though, I think it might be a good idea for her team to set expectations.

I agree nothing is worse then watching a world class athlete being a former shell of what they once were. Watching Gracie doing nothing but doubles would be painful to watch considering she was just one clean FP away from winning a World title only two and a half years ago.

i agree with you, but you also have to consider the fact that Mao and Gracie are like comparing apples to oranges...Mao was at the end of her career and lost her passion for skating. She was at a point where it was no longer enjoyable to her. Gracie was dealing with issues both on and off the ice, and didn't completely lose her love for it. She knew she had more to give, and that's why she's coming back. It's one thing to watch a world class skaters do doubles because they just don't love it anymore, or one who does doubles on the way to building her skating back up. whatever she does, i'm just looking forward to it.

I really can't see this happening. Even if she's doing just two jumps well (like the lutz and the loop) and can skate a cleanish 2 triple SP and 4 triple LP, she can outscore most of the Americans who have competed on the GP this season.

Competition is way different than practice. It takes a long time to get used to the anxiety and quell your emotions so you can focus. I'd expect a very messy competition from Gracie. It's ok. She'll grow from there.

It might be painful for us to see Gracie do doubles, but will it be painful for *Gracie*?

Or is she going out there for the joy of skating and to see what she can do? In which case, I say :hap10:

And I believe reports our of Champs Camp from people who are willing to be identified as the person who saw them, and not third hand Twitter or YouTube reports. But that’s just me......:slink:

If Gracie competes I am sure she will at least attempt the minimum requirements for the SP: one 2A, one solo triple, and one triple combination.
