2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

I would have to agree with this statement as far as filling Michelle Kwan's shoes but even Michelle couldn't have captured people's hearts if she hadn't been all over the television. The decline in figure skating fandom, IMO, has more to do with the lack of exposure in the media, one tour being closed and SOI going to less and less cities with the ticket costs going up and up. It's not easy for a family with 2 children to pay almost $100/ticket to see SOI and television coverage is pitiful. Until more people have access to figure skating its popularity in the US is going to continue on the downward trend.

Always liked Ashley and her fierce determination and possitivity.

This weekend when I was cleaning out stuff I stumbled upon tickets I found from 2003 worlds and COI. The prices are actually about the same if you can believe it.

The judges are willing to reward her with the other top juniors. I think if she went to junior worlds and skated clean, she would make top 5. Her elements are beautiful.

She just needs to land those jumps.

Ting was 7th at 2018 JW and three of the ladies who finished ahead of her have moved up to senior. The Japanese ladies who remained junior haven't been as impressive as the ones who moved up, and Yelim Kim is the top Korean lady. Yes, 5th is quite possible, and if she did that, the US would have two ladies spots at every JGP for the 2019-2020 season.

But she is not an Olympic Champion and anyway it’s early to judge her carrier . Of course some skating fans miss judged her all of her skating life without any problem.

Too early to judge? She is practically retired. I am talking about her gains from being an active competitor not about what she'd go on to do later in life. At that rate you can say that about most Olympic champions. If you can win an OGM, chances are you know how to succeed in life.

What a statement. First we don’t know Ashley’s finiancial state, and clearly I was talking about olympic champions..and no, not everyone has been financially successful though they received a big push after winning the gold and for a long time after that. That’s why an education is the way to go...

Don't have to know her financial state exactly to know her money isn't Yuna long, Kwan long, Mao long, etc. I'm sure she's probably doing okay, but she has not been a skater that's very in-demand here in the states compared to other athletes. And yeah, education is the way to go. Sarah Hughes got one.

Every season we waited for someone who was the whole package... It hasn't happened yet so we had Ashley. She is a good competitor and had a lot fight in her.

Is Karen still injured?

Seems overly optimistic to think that she will improve *that* much by Nationals if she can’t get through two programs here. 4CC team is likely to be not easier to make than worlds - would the two ladies who make the worlds team also go to 4CC?

Ting just scored 132.23 in the Tallinn FS and won the silver medal. Sakhanovich scored 132.29. Sheesh.

Ting did great! Congrats on silver! She fell on the 3-3 but didn’t let herself fall apart! She skated completely clean after that! Great job. She has the second highest international score of any US lady this season. She may just pull a surprise at nats.

I think most actual Olympic Champions would beg to differ.

I’m willing to bet they wouldn’t unless they don’t care about longevity and only wanted the quick medal which is possible. But no way in hell would I personally want to be a Sotnikova than a Wagner, who would seriously go into any profession and want to be a flash in a pan? That’s what a lot of Olympic Champions end up being (at least in Ladies) but I’d think many would have liked to keep consistency & longevity if they could.

I wouldn't be surprised if she still hasn't recovered fully. iirc her instagram post announcing her competing said something along the lines of "I've recovered enough to compete". But perhaps after competing the short, her foot wasn't feeling great and this isn't a comp that is worth the chance of reinjury (this isn't worlds with spots on the line). Skaters can't just withdraw in the middle of a comp for no reason (though the reason doesn't need to be made public), but considering that she's coming back from injury, I'd guess that she WD for medical reasons.

I don't have many expectations for nats but I'm hoping she comes back strong next season (assuming/if she continues competing)

Silver medal for Ting! Very well done overall!

Between Ting and Lui it seems finally the US has younger girls that will push the veterans to either get it together or be passed up. This is what the US Ladies have needed for years now a good kick in the butt. Karen showed glimpses but hasn't got it done besides a couple of times at Nationals and Worlds in 2017.

Yes, at Tallinn Trophy.

WOW!!! This is very exciting for our ladies. I feel sorry for Karen but, she was injured and never really got going. I can't see her catching Bradie, Mariah, or Ting for a spot on the Podium. I wonder who's going to Worlds? This is getting good.

I'm guessing that she plans to compete at Nationals but, because she started the season late due to injury, isn't expecting a big result. It will be interesting to see how much she and Gracie can improve from their recent outings.
