Not saying it’s wrong to try and develop into the so called “mature” skater first (I absolutely despise that term) but when the rest of the field who’s getting into the top 10 are doing so after showing great results and along the way impressing the judges it does sort of make it a bit more difficult to breakthrough after sowing seeds of doubt. I think if they weren't shooting for gold, they could do programs with weaker layouts that they could never win gold on but that they could do without URs and get in the top 10 or even the top 5 with some luck and a good performance. They could then build their reputation by delivering consistent programs and gradually upping the layout like someone like Loena Hendrickx has done.

The US has ladies doing weaker layouts - but they aren't skating cleanly enough to build a reputation or stand out among their own national competitors. Why should the US give someone without a 3Lz or 3F (just an example, idk) an international opportunity over someone who has more difficult jumps? (Unless that person's more difficult jumps are all UR, of course.)

It's not about having a "mature" skater. It's about building reputation via difficulty and consistency over the course of several competitions, nationally and internationally. People act like Bradie was crowned National Champion out of nowhere on a whim from USFS, but no one outskated her at Nationals or over the course of the entire season. The depth isn't there. USFS is responsible for that, but it's not their fault that they are doing their best to push the talent that they do have.

If Karen and Bradie (and arguably Gracie) weren't "cooked" or developed yet by the time USFS threw them into the spotlight, who was USFS supposed to throw into the spotlight instead? No one? That's bad for the sport.
 
Any information on bradie? We know her music already but has she posted anything about composer, which Challengers, etc?

And Karen? Any new posts? Going back to Carmen or Slow Dancing, or something new?

I’m just assuming that they’re beginning preparations for the season.

Just noticed that Gracie has been added to the USFS ISP … which makes sense, of course, in light of her GP assignment.

Only a theory, but I wonder whether USFS purposely had held back from publishing her name on the ISP list until after GP assignments were announced .. just in case Gracie did not receive a GP invitation?
Presumably USFS had to have known that Gracie hoped to return to the GP series (b/c USFS would have had to put her name forth for consideration at the ISU meeting). But I would understand if(?) USFS had wanted to avoid the hypothetical scenario of her name already having appeared on the ISP list (which would have stirred up a lot of fan interest) … but then for her not to be included in GP assignments.

Anyway, good luck to Gracie. :ghug:

Katie McBeath has been showing up in a lot of Team Cain social media lately.

I wonder whether she has joined them on a permanent basis or whether she is only on an extended visit to Dallas for summer training. :popcorn:

Yes but I do find it slightly odd that neither party will give an official statement as to whether this is a coaching change or she's just getting help from him over the summer.

Maybe no one has asked. Or maybe they’re doing a try out.

Following up on TSL tweet below: Alex Ouriashev just answered, “Don’t know yet,” when I asked if he were going to be Karen’s coach or if she had just come to him for help on jumps. Said he expects to know “very soon."

If she's there again, it makes me think that she's either moved there or is just getting jump help, rather than a tryout. But I could be wrong.

I’m not trying to minimize the fact that Gracie’s performance declined over a period of a couple of years, and that a number of serious things probably contributed to that. But I’m also very conscious that she could have made significant progress handling those things, to the point where her family / team support her return to competition as a healthy, positive step.

None of us, including me, know whether that’s the case, and I don’t think it’s at all wrong for people to be skeptical of what she might achieve this season. I just think wish people wouldn’t assume failure before it’s proven and would be supportive, regardless of the outcome. That’s all.

Full disclosure everybody- huge fan of hers since 2012.. like.. HUGE :):hap93:

We should all start from a place of generosity and empathy. We're already seeing light jabs and she's just barely mentioned her return.
Let's let her tell us and show us what she wants to when she wants to. Then we can react.. from a place of generosity and empathy.
I guess we should treat all of these athletes that way.
P.S. I'm preaching to myself here. I can get a little judgey of these girls that I don't even know. US and International.


I'm beyond excited for her return. I'd like to see some new music styles on Gracie, some new program layouts, spin positions, etc.
I'm excited and hopeful that all of the US Ladies will WORK HARD this year!

Just heard yesterday that she went home on Thursday. Don't know if that means for good or what. Still a bit of a mystery.
 
Some skaters have been silent for a while now, and I wonder if they’re competing this season. Paige Rydberg, Haley Beavers, Ashley Lin, Emily Chan. Yes, I know that these are the “B-level” skaters, and none are in the ISP, but still...

Random, but Ashley Wagner used to have very good spins. Not extraordinary spins, but good and fast. What happened? Did she stop practicing them? Did she lose flexibility as she got older?
 
I think she mentioned multiple concussions making it more difficult to get through full programs...
