2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

Is it true that 2019 nationals single-session tickets go on sale today?
For someone who’s never been to a figure skating competition, I don’t want to miss out!

it says on the official website single session tickets go on sale in september. championship weekend packages go on sale july 16.

I attended the Ice Dreams show last evening in Elmsford, NY where Karen, Mirai, Starr and Alysa performed. Both Starr and Alysa did their short programs and looked great. Starr is skating to "Summertime" and Alysa to "Lo Siento/Spanish Flame." Alysa landed a two footed under-rotated 3A, from my perspective but did a clean 3-3 in the second half.

Karen skated to her SOI program "Never Enough" and popped a lutz but landed everything else. Mirai did her SOI program to "No Good Deed" and also landed all of her jumps. She looked better here than when I saw her on SOI. I hope Mirai keeps competing, but if not, she should do more shows b/c her personality comes out more when she's not concentrating on landing combos.

From my perspective, I think Starr is looking very strong and more mature and I think she has a shot at the Sr. Nationals podium. Alysa will likely repeat as Jr. Champion, unless she is allowed to skate as a senior at Nationals?

As for Karen, other than the popped lutz, she looked great, but she is more of a question mark for me.

Thanks so much for the videos. Mirai did a Salcow, her most hated jump. Seems like she’s still trying to challenge herself. Disappointing that Karen popped her Lutz. But she’s been reworking her technique, so there will be an adjustment period.

I saw a video of Alysa’s 3A. Not easy to do one under the lights. Hopefully it gets consistent over the season.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the US Ladies dominance ended with Michelle Kwan's 10-year reign. And I adore MK. I just think there's some dynamic working, when all the girls coming up see this one skater that everyone aspires to be like, rather than choosing their favorite world medalist a la Fleming, Hamill, Lynn, Sumners, Yamaguchi, Kerrigan, Lipinski, etc.

There's a similar dynamic with Russian men. From 1992 to 2006, all the men's olympic gold medalists were Russian [ETA: Correction: Victor Petrenko was, of course, Ukrainian], ending with the multiple-year dominance of Plushenko. What is it? I'm not sure. Is it because Plushenko, (and Kwan) seemed so out of reach? or is it that everyone wants to then skate like Plushenko, or Kwan, so there's a little less diversity in style, a little less of people loving and developing their own uniqueness? Or could it be something else?

When you think about it, though ... Russian pairs and ice dance teams also dominated for much longer. So maybe part of the reason Americans are so out of sorts about not having our ladies' champion at the top is because for so long, the ladies division was the one shining star we could count on.

I think is the pression ... When we speak in the USA or Russia ... the skater has to win or medal if not is a failure .... In the USA I think they don't evaluate realistic the chances of her skaters creating a hype around the female skaters .... There always thinking in the next MK ... if a skater wins a competion ( doesn't matter if is a easy one they began to call her a champion even if they know there are 4-5 skaters ahead of her) so that's create a lot of pression .....

When we speak in the Russian field ... I remember reading something about the "pluchenko ghost"... that every male skate in russian is haunted by him ... Russia federation is always expecting a new pluchenko.... and that was one of the reasons that voronov gets better results now that when he was young.... less pression

And if you compare to canada or japan federation ... They take better care of there skaters when they aren't the best ... so they could rise one day to be the best .. do you think that Kaetlyn Osmond with her career results pre 2016 would survive in Russia ...

I agree that undue pressure is put on young skaters in the US, I don’t know if by the fed or fans or both, to be “the next big thing”. And that winning is the *only* measurement for a young skater, and if you happen to disagree with this you don’t understand that it’s a “sport”.:scratch2:

Alysia Liu, for example. I wish fans would just let her be, and mature, and improve at a steady pace, rather than act as though being on the senior podium at 13 would be some wonderful accomplishment for Alysia and ladies’ skating. Really???

And yes, I know it’s a sport ;)

Don't we all...

She's so small and with so much potential. But so was Caroline, Mirai, Gracie, etc... why is it when a young new comer arrives on te scene we must anoint them as the future and put all this pressure on them? Why can't we cheer for multiple women? Give them some space instead of demanding the go out and meet these unrealistically high expectations?

I love Alysa, but she's only twelve. At some point she's going to have her growth spurt. She's going to compete internationally and deal with true competition from other ladies with not only 3A's but quads, insane spins, edges, footwork, skating skills, and unbelievable consistency.

What happens the. When she goes out there does a good job, in my opinion, with a few mistakes but doesn't make the podium? I already know. People crying about how she was overhyped. Other fans that will nitpick her to death. More fans demanding a new coach. And a good portion of fans that will pack up and move on to the next new skater.

The JGP is almost here, and inevitable people will have high expectations for newbies and be angry when they don't meet them. Bradie never medaled at the JGP or JW. But that didn't stop her from improving or achieving her own dreams of being an Olympian.

So I hope in a few months we remember that before we throw all US juniors under the bus again for not receiving a JGP medal. I think of them all as works in progress.

I found some videos of Alysa and Starr at the show on Instagram.

Alysa’s 3a looks forward. Super glad she has another year to get it more around.

Also, Mirai and Starr look great. Particularly Mirai. It’s such a shame she has decided to not to do the GP (and probably retire) because she truly looks better than ever. Jumps look around. She’s performing. Agh, come back for nats Mirai!!

Gosh, Starr's program already looks so polished for this early in the season. I know that last season she didn't have all of her jumps but I am really excited about watching this program in the upcoming season. Does anyone know what the status of her jumps is?

She says she's working on her Lutz and 3A this summer. I think that she wants to include her 3A in her program this season. But I haven't seen any videos of her doing it yet. However I do know she doing a 3F+3T and it's clean.

We'll see soon. There are a lot of competitions coming up soon. Skate Detroit, Glacier Falls, Philly International, and Asian Open. She and a lot of other big names are bound to be at one of these competitions. And thankfully, these tend to have video!

Awesome! Very exciting.

Amen! And not just the juniors. Ashley and Mirai have both improved their technique at age 23 or 24. Gracie's going to be 23 in a couple of months. In my book, there's no reason not to think of all three women as works in progress. Kostner is still aspiring to be a better artist on ice, at 31.

All four are inspiration for anyone who's ever been told they're too old (or too whatever) to become who or what they dream of being.

I agree ... Why rush things ...

Starr looks very promising. It's clearly she worked on presenting herself more like a senior lady and I can see why she go SA!

I believe in enjoying, appreciating, & celebrating successful young athletes while they are young. If I had waited around for Nathan to mature into the athlete many people want him to be, I would have missed a multitude of seasons of enjoying his career. The same with the Shibs, Alysa, Mirai, the list is endless. And it includes many, many athletes that never became major international stars or continued their careers into adulthood. If I had failed to enjoy them while they were young, I would have missed out on them all together. I agree there's no point in heaping crazy expectations on young athletes. It's a recipe for disappointment. But I think we should absolutely enjoy their skating, their technical achievements, successful results, and most of all the performances of young skaters.

This post is incredible 👍🏻👍🏻

thank you for the link. In my opinion, Starr has improved leaps and bounds. I think this recording of "Summertime" is perfect for her. It goes well (or contrasts well) with her intensity.

Summertime, IMO, is a pretty tough song to skate to. It’s deep and soulful without a lot of musical crescendos to highlight your jumps. I think Starr is doing particularly well with it.

Thank you! Tired of the effort to shame people for enjoying young talent. Sure, it's not necessary to project their future as the next big thing, future Worlds/Olympics medalist, but let's enjoy them and root for them to accomplish great things both now and as they develop further.

Anyway, this time last year I was feeling super skeptical about Starr. She had little polish and extremely weak skating skills, but she impressed me at Nationals with her improvement, and the glimpses we are getting of her new program are marvelous. Very sophisticated and cool! I love it. Her SS look as though they have continued to improve as well. (That said, her 2A looks fine - but it's not a  2A that I expect to see from someone who is on the verge of accomplishing a real 3A on a regular basis. Prove me wrong, Starr!)
