2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

Bradie trains in the Chicago area. Traveling from there to Japan has to involve pretty severe jet lag for just a one-day performance. I'd say it's unfair to compare the Japanese and even the ladies traveling from Russia with those traveling from NA.

Definitely. When I moved to Japan from the States I felt like I was walking around in a drunken haze for the first three days. I can't imagine skating at peak performance during that super gross jet lag window. It's not set up like a normal competition and shouldn't be treated as such.

Ashley Wagner opens up on struggling with depression after 2018 nationals-

Now it's more clear why she sat out worlds and is taking a break. I give big props to her and Gracie for openly talking about this stuff and their experiences with depression despite the stigma around it. In a sport where your mind and mental health plays such a big role its huge that 2 top ladies are being so transparent about it. I hope their experiences can help other skaters to not be afraid to reach out if they're struggling.

Ashley's Instastory comments still are viewable for a little longer (posted approx. 17 hrs ago), if anyone would like to catch her on-camera delivery there.

Appreciate that Zaccardi gave extensive quotes on the NBC blog and that macy posted the link. :thank:

Very glad that friends/family helped guide Ashley and Gracie to receiving professional help. Respect to both for speaking openly about mental health and their own lives.

Congratulations to Laiken Lockley, who finished fourth in Junior Ladies at UGL regionals and has qualified for sectionals.

Laiken and partner Keenan Prochnow finished seventh in JGP pair rankings this season, and are first alternates for JGPF.

Ashley has said that she is continuing to train and taking the Grand Prix off. That’s basically all she’s said regarding her skating future since nationals. I’m so glad to hear she got professional help and is doing better now. Us ladies skating just isn’t the same with out Ashley 💔

I'd love to see Ashley and Gracie both make a resurgence, having gone through mental health crises and coming out stronger on the other side. And Ashley and Gracie were great at pushing each other. US ladies need them! And Mirai, I'd love to see the generation that is on the verge of retirement just come in and blow the competition away and I'd love to see some of our younger ladies come in and be amazing.

I think Ashley accomplished everything that she realistically could have; she may have been disappointed at not making the Olympic team, but I doubt she has many regrets overall about her skating career. She has an Olympic medal, a World medal, three US championships and five GP titles. Gracie, on the other hand, seems motivated to resurrect her career with a more positive attitude, and we'll see soon how close she is to her previous form. Based on ability alone, 2016 Gracie would be competitive with the top senior women today, so there's some possibility that she could surpass her previous results.

still keeping my fingers crossed they make an appearance at nationals, no matter how slim the chance may be!

I don't know what to think of Ashley and last season. I'd understand her alot better if she said because of her depression she became unmotivated the whole season which resulted in her poor performances and ended in not making the Olympic team. But to say she suffered depression AFTER she was denied the Olympics, well, I guess she has that as a reason to be depressed, but that's just a normal response to a bad outcome IMO. I don't know, to me there is a difference from being 'depressed' versus having a clinical depressive disorder.

I do agree that Ashley pretty much maxed out on her potential. She should be happy for that.

I'd be careful to judge Ashley's state of mind. Just because she said she suffered a deep depression after not making the Olympic team, doesn't mean that is exactly when it hit her. It could have been much more acute earlier in the season.

I personally became very depressed after something pretty unexpected and traumatic happened to me. I couldn’t shake it, I wasn’t strong enough to overcome it. So I began seeing a therapist and was diagnosed with depression but like a situational depression. I hadn’t really experienced depression before, at least not on the level I was dealing with. But there really wasn’t any difference between the symptoms I was experiencing and the symptoms some one with clinical depression would experience. Just different ways to treat it, and different expectations on how it would effect the rest of my life. What happened to Ashely at nationals wasn’t really fair, and I’m sure was completely unexpected to her. When something you love/work really hard for and want really bad is taken from you or doesn’t work out the way you thought, it can really break you. Our emotions and mind don’t always react in a rational way and it’s unfortunately very easy to let all of the shock and hurt spiral into a depression that gets out of your control. It’s not the same as some one who’s always struggled with depression but it’s harmful in many of the same ways.

I agree. I also thought Ashely is the last person to have depression among top US ladies, especially over her 4th finish at the nationals. She struggled technically the entire season so it was not like she had one bad event and her Olympics moment was gone. It was completely different from 4 years ago. Hope the other US ladies stay mentally healthy.

Other than Bradie, is there another US Lady that could make the GPF? Starr seems like she could make a break through. Is she a fulltime Senior now?

I believe she is. Honestly, I think in 2-3 years, she'll be a powerhouse. She's still young, and I think her programming could be a bit better. She's very athletic though and she seems to have a lot of potential. I'm really hoping to see her dominate in 2-3 years with some maturity in her skating.

I wish both Gracie and Ashley well. They have given a lot to American skating and skating in general.Personality, accomplishment, presence on the ice, technicalprowess. They have to do what is best for them. Yes, we have read on these posts this does affect others in the fight for 15 minutes of fame and maybe some fortune. That's life. Part of me wants a resurgence and part of me has that song in my head for both ladies - Let it go! Let it go! I think Gracie will be a nats barring disaster at COR. It is so hard. I wonder how Yulia Lip felt. Did she lack the mental toughness or was it physical. I just hope these two ladies can sleep well.
