I'm not very aware about how the changing nationalities/feds "game" works in figure skating.
Can someone please explain why would someone like Alexia Paganini change the US fed for the Swiss fed? I mean, why would you give up on a more powerful fed, as long as it's pretty clear you would be at least top 3 in that nation anyway? Even more, she lives and was born in the US anyway, so it's obviously not about changing for her "true" nationality or something.
Ohhhhhhh......
I've followed Alexia since she was 10. After what USFS put her through, good for her for leaving them! I've had a bone to pic with them about this for a long time. She was the only intermediate with two triples, but she she lost to a massive amount to Tessa Hong who only had double axels and a underrotated triple Salchow. She was the first novice to land a triple triple combo, she lost massively to another artist with no triple triple. She got the memo finally that USFS (at the time) preferred artistic princesses over jumping beans like her. So she stopped training her quad sal, stopped increasing the difficulty of her programs and worked on being more a princess type skater. That blew up in her face, since the judges once again ignored her "improvements" and put her in fifth at juniors.
Her dad is Swiss and Switzerland has few good skaters. Thanks to the switch, she's gone to the Olympics, Worlds, Europeans, got two GP slots, and lots of trips all over the world. That never would've happened in the US.
I think a lot of people are upset because she seems so good and we seem to be lacking. But that's an illusion. Lexi still has a low BV in her FS, which is keep her off the podium unless she can add her flip and another triple triple. Bradie and Mariah are both better than her.
But I like this for her. She gets to develop at her own pace with her own style. No more trying to conform to what the fed believes you should be. Switzerland gives her free rein to develop as an athlete. I know if she was still representing the US, she'd be struggling. And everyone would be belittling everything about her.
Just let her go. If Nationals is any indication, we'll be fine.
