Source for Orser’s comments? I must have missed that news.

On iPad can’t link. But yes, you must have missed it.

Phil Hersh article in May. Brian specifically talked about the flutz.

Funny that I remember since I could give a rat’s patootie about flutzing:biggrin:

Evgenia's jumps are a struggle (the hammer-toe she takes off with just kills me) and the new GOE rules don't favor her.

I'm actually happy to see the judges scoring conservatively, as long as they keep it semi-consistent across competitions at the senior level. The juniors are impressive, but the GOEs are pretty darn out of control. I'd rather see judges at the senior level keep the GOEs realistic instead of giving out 4s and 5s completely willy-nilly.

Agree that the protocols will be very interesting. Bradie's jumps didn't look UR to me at all (though I am bad at detecting it).

Julia's got a gorgeous dress, but she really needs to blend that blush, especially the giant streak across her forehead.

Look, if they gave her the edge call and the UR for the 3T that’s a lot of points lost and explains her “low” score.
And let’s not forget Evgenia’s combo do not check the bullets for a +4/+5. Her 2A also must have taken a big hit.
Anyway, under the new scale this performance was not her best. I’m sure it will get better though!

Really? I thought Evgenia was a model for some of their new GOE points in the guidelines video.

Was she? (I'll admit I did not watch the videos.) It's my understanding that the new GOE system rewards height and distance and technique above everything else - which aren't Evgenia's strong points.

I don't think score is wrong or low here even compared to juniors, it looked fair to me.

This wasn't a better SP than what Anna Shcherbakova and Alena Kostornaya did few weeks ago: i can see the improvements on the artistic side but yeah still lots of work on the jumps.

Voila:
"She is going to reinvent herself," Orser said of Medvedeva. "Even though she has some amazing titles, I feel they are the tip of the iceberg, that there is so much more she can do."

Will one of them be fixing the "flutz" -- the wrong edge takeoff on Medvedeva's triple lutz -- that has been a subject of controversy, since judges rarely call her on it?

"I'm going to do my best," Orser said, with a laugh. "I have been looking at it already. I'm not going try to disguise it or put it in a corner.

"That's not going to be an easy one, but I think she's open to this. She's open to the change."

Well, with Eteri she did 1 Lz, pretty obvious i suppose.
Sure, everybody knew she had a flutz, but there's a difference between that being something gossiped about on forums or behind the scenes, and another for the skater's camp to publicly admit that she's doing the jump wrong.

Her body is quite different now. While I think it will work for her better in the long-run, it will take some time to adjust to and I wouldn't expect her to get the milage out of it right away.

I think it's less her body and more that she's retooling her jump technique and is therefore more likely to mess up when nervous. She landed all her axels in her warmups beautifully.

1 step back, two steps forward. Medvedeva will struggle for some time before she really starts showing progress. I think people expect too much and I’m already seeing the negativity.

It’s not like Evgenia’s Flutz was NEVER called. She received a few e’s throughout her career and a few ! too.
