Roman is the first Canadian man to medal at NHK since Jeffrey Buttle won the event in 2003, believe it or not.

Wow, thanks for that piece of trivia; it makes his unexpected podium finish even more special! :clapper: I wonder if Roman is aware of this? He'd be even more thrilled to know that, in a sense, he's following in Jeff's footsteps. :)

Also surprisingly, Roman has brought home more hardware this season than the other Canadian senior and junior men. He has 1 GP and 1 CS medals, Nam has 1 GP medal, Keegan has 1 CS medal, and Stephen and Aleksa have 1 JGP medal each.

BTW, I'm mortified that the ISU misspelled his surname (Sadowsky) in the thumbnail of his official video. :palmf: No wonder he prefers "Romsky."

so, it's not surprising that Canadian men didn't medal there, considering pretty much only one canadian man was medaling on the circuit for all these years and wasn't going to japan..

You've already mentioned Kevin, so the only other Canadian guy I can recall who got a GP medal when Patrick was competing (Nam earned his first one when Patrick took a break) is Shawn Sawyer. Was there anyone else?

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas Roman! siberia- it also made my morning when i saw he medalled! :) Now, he needs to go home and work on the 3LZ-3T. Hopefully this was a breakthrough performance for him. I'd love to see him on the podium come Canadians.

I'm also so happy for Kirsten & Mike, putting on solid performances that they are obviously very happy with.

Nine medals from Canadians...not bad at all.

On a shallow note, I hope Kirsten goes back to blonde by the Final. The brunette look does not go with either of her costumes, in my opinion.

Team Canada did pretty well on the Grand Prix this season - 9 medals (1 gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze), more than double last year's result of 4 medals (1 silver, 3 bronze). Compared to some other countries, still a bit lacking in top-tier hitters for the moment, but that's definitely progress in the right direction.

We can add Yuzu to the list of Japanese skaters who thinks Roman is too tall  : https://twitter.com/FSkatech/status/1198217615027499008

And here's Aymoz's reaction: https://twitter.com/kevin_aym/status/1198282402692395009

I felt like I had overdosed on caffeine (and I don't even drink coffee)! :p

Roman's 3Lz has been giving him more trouble than the 3A this season! :eeking: He did avoid that jump all of last season, so I assume there's a lingering issue with whatever injury he had that prevented him practicing the Lutz.

Isn't it odd that he's a GP medallist and a 3-time CS medallist, yet he doesn't have a senior-level (or a junior one, for that matter) Nationals medal?

What I don't get is, considering that it's seemingly a problem jump:

a) why is it in the short program?
b) why is it the last jump in the free skate?

a. I would hypothesize because overreaching & trying two different quads was killing him in the SP last season so he needs the lutz.

b. I would hypothesize so that it doesn't mess up all the jumps beforehand.

Also, I mean, really it's not historically a problem relative to his quads or axels.

I agree about the hair and what the heck is Michael wearing. A long sleeved t with a pocket square?? A flowy top or even even a simple dress shirt woudl be better.

I didn't realize that! Funny how I just assumed he must have had a Nationals medal as a junior. I checked wikipedia to see what he placed as a junior and saw that he withdrew that one year and jumped to seniors then next year...when he was only 14 years old!

I'm assuming the 3Lz must be going better in practice ot keep it in the programs...otherwise, I agree Colonel Green, especially for the short program. The extra 0.6 points for a lutz over the flip doesn't seem worth it at the moment.

ETA: On the Skate Canada press release about Roman's surprise bronze, I love the Yuzu photo bomb.

I've just noticed that Dylan and Asher discussed Roman in their latest episode ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3XbMmBrwE4&t=4m14s ), and I cracked up when they said that his extensions reached to the other side of the rink because he's twice as tall as the other men at 6'10"!

I have videos of Roman competing as a senior from the 2014 Canadian Championships; he was so tiny in those days!

Is Roman as tall as Nam? Both seem really tall like over six feet tall. It's hard to land those quads being that tall. Mind you Canada has had some lanky if not awkward lookin skaters. I felt Emmanual Sandu looked a bit too long limbed and perhaps the most aesthetically disturbing was Kaetlyn Osmond's coach Ravi Walia. He rally had some awkward lines that weren't so pleasing whereas Evan L. seemed to do better using his height.

Well Canada is alive in dance, pairs and an interesting brewing in men - Nam, Keegan, Roman and will Stephen regain his jumps. I am or was hoping Nadeau might break through - he has a wonderful personality. The ladies oh what a mess. I have no idea why Canada struggles so badly with the woman with flashes of hope Tracey Wainman who fizzled fast, Manley, Chouinard who choked so much, Rochette, Daleman and Osmond. Daleman is so lost right now. Some very very very lucky Canadian lady will be going to worlds - or may be not - not sure if they have the minimums.

There are quite a few ladies with the minimums now;
Gabby
Veronik
Aurora
Emily
Alison
Alicia
There may be others but those ones I’m certain of.

No, Roman is taller; according to the ISU, he's 184 cm (6' 1/2"), but according to Skate Canada, Tracey Wilson and Roman himself, he's 6'1". I'm a bit confused about Nam's height because the ISU had listed him as being 180 cm (5'11") all of last season, but now it's 176 cm, which is 5'9", however Skate Canada claims he's 5'10". I have seen Nam compete in person thrice, and I've met him once, and I'm inclined to believe he's at least 5'10".

Perhaps you're aware that Nic is 6'1", Conrad is 6 feet even, and Joseph is 5'11" (and there are even more tall Canadian men's singles skaters, but I assume you're not interested in those who are lower on the ladder).

Oh no for sure. Sorry I don't know the other skaters as well but I have heard of them. Wow they grow them tall in Canada. I thought Patrick Chan was like five 7 or 8 though. at least when these men skate they do no look as awkward as Ravi Walia did when he competed. His spins had an odd look quite often ie the camel. It wasn't all that pretty.

Congratulations, Canadian friends!

It appears as though my gal Deanna Stellato is indeed skating for Canada with her new partner Maxine Deschamps. Their SP tonight at the SC Challenge impressed me, no fancy tricks but fairly clean skating, (bobble on a jump) and Deanna with her usual elegance and flair. Maxime actually reminded me of Nate Bartholomay, with his smoothness (and also with his beard).

I am looking forward to seeing them skate together, and given the state of US pairs, happy for Canada but sad for the US that we lost Deanna.
