Lajoie/Lagha made it to the JGPF before winning WJC. D/W haven't quite done that yet.
Kind of missing the point.

Anyway, the draw for the YOG mixed nations team event happened earlier, and all the Canadian participants except Rakic made the cut (Brooke & Brandon, of course, were guaranteed to since there are only eight pairs):

- Catherine is on Team Discovery with Nikolaj Memola, Panfilova/Rylov and Fradji/Fourneaux.
- Brooke & Brandon are on Team Determination with Cha Younghyun, Nella Pelkonen and Wolfkostin/Chen.
- Natalie & Bruce are on Team Vision with Andrei Mozalev, Regina Schermann, and Nesterova/Darenskyi.
- Miku & Tyler are on Team Hope with Liam Kapeikis, Maia Mazzara, and Roscher/Schuster.

Ranking the teams based on how their members did in the free segment at YOG, Discovery and Determination are in joint third place with 19 points apiece. Natalie & Bruce, if they could get some of the levels they lost, could maybe raise Team Vision up a bit. Miku & Tyler's team is dead last, unfortunately.

Rakic needs a new coach. He can skate cleanly, but he isn't particularly musical, and doesn't seem to use his arms effectively, which is typical of McLeod students.

I thought McCleod's students had issues with the axel and not to be mean for whatever reason she has had some very promising skater - and they never reached their possible potential. Mira Leung andwasn't Sandu's her student too? Kevin Reynolds If you were superstitious she seemed like the kiss of death. Maybe it is a coinidence?

Thank you Claire. Great interview with Roman. I hope he does well at nationals. I love tall guys in figure skating.

Canada has another tall fairly talented skater in Nam Nguyen. When he grew he sprouted and it killed his progress as a skater. As a result while he has improved his skating quality somewhat (still not as strong or fast as one would hope I think it affected his jumps. He still has only the Quad Sal. His quad toe might be stronger than Jason Brown mind you.

Kaiya's short program from Junior Nationals. She's a bit under seven points ahead, would be wider but for the UR on the 3T. She's in a class of her own domestically.

Skate Canada must be wincing hard because they can't give her the Senior National title now.
Half-kidding aside, she remains a charming skater. Her jumps are still a bit dodgy but the landings are definitely better as seen with the loop and axel.

It’s probably the cleanest most technically difficult program we will see for a lady this weekend. 😩

Natalie & Bruce have now precisely replicated Marjorie & Zach's performance at the Youth Olympics, coming fourth in the dance and then getting a bronze in the team event (and since they overperformed in the standings relative to their free dance in the individual, they were the ones who technically boosted their team into bronze medal position).

Brooke & Brandon's team tied with Natalie & Bruce's on points, but lost the tiebreaker on placements. Not their fault, as they skated probably their best free skate ever (the blame lies with Wolfkostin/Chen, alas for them -- but good for Natalie & Bruce).

Nice: blaming Wolfkostin / Chen for the loss of a medal for Canada. Guess that's payback for W/C winning bronze over the Canadian ID team (as if that makes any sense).

I'm surprised that W/C even agreed to compete in the Team competition: Junior RD practice for US Nationals begins on Monday, Jan 20. W/C are competing at US Nationals not only for a podium spot, but for a berth on the JW team. That has to be their primary focus.

As I noted, both of the bronze medal contenders had Canadians on them, so there was no medal lost "for Canada" (these team medals aren't for countries, anyway, just for individual skaters).

Team Determination would have had 19 points if its members had replicated their individual event showings, which every member did (or better, in the case of Nella Pelkonen) but W/C, who, by finishing behind D'A/W, made the difference between the two teams. The ice dance was actually the decisive event in the team event, between Yoshida/Nishiyama's shock upset of Tyutyunina Shustitskiy and D'Alessandro/Waddell finishing ahead of Wolfkostin/Chen. Reverse those placements, and the gold medalists are the silver medalists, the silver medalists the gold medalists, the bronze medalists are tied for fourth, and the fourth-place finishers have the bronze.

Kaiya has those Osmond-esque qualities of pure joy, presence, connection with the audience & judges, and the ability to deliver under pressure. I am a fan! Her spins have improved so much this season no doubt due to Scott Davis, one of the best spinners ever.

Congratulations to Kaiya! I look forward to seeing her grow and improve in the future. Love her joy and spirit.

I've been ill the past few days, which is why I haven't been posting videos, but I just wanted to express my joy that Corey Circelli is the new national junior champion! :)
