2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

I do hope the apartments where they live are well soundproofed because there will probably come a point when athletes will start in on a lot of pylometric work to preserve jump power and I'm just picturing the poor soul living underneath someone constantly jumping onto and off of a half meter to meter tall box that hopefully has the good stereo headphones to help drone out the thumps.

That is not entirely true.

There have been cases of deaths even for young people, for instance last week or a 19 years old italian died in London because UK doctors was still treating coronavirus as a regular flu (they had that silly theory that it is better to get infected to build an immune system against it which has been proven to be false), they didn't give him the right medicine, let alone an N95 respirator, they did the test only post mortem.

Same reason for a 12 years old girl who passed away in Belgium this morning.

If you already have diseases (of any kind) COVID-19 can make your health significantly worse regardless of the age.

The other big issue is that if you continue to let people moving, the contagion will continue to grow and hospitals don't have enough room for everyone. There have been cases of people dying cause there doctors were too busy dealing with too many patients and they had to choose which one to save.

This is why for now it's important to stay home, up until you reach the peak of the contagion, then when it will start to fall down, even if you have less cases you can deal with less infected patients better.

China and South Korea are recovering, that shows there is a way out as long as everyone follow the rules diligently.

President Putin spoke out to the nation very recently just saying this basically.
Well we all know that China does not put up the true numbers of infections and deaths , you just have to go look on social media to know that, so it's still in question if they are recovering or if they just do not say anything anymore when someone gets infected

All these juniors and novices are training hard for the test skates, I wonder what the criteria is to be invited for test skates and then assigned a JGP assignment. Valieva, Usacheva, Khromykh, Samodelkina, Petrosyan, and Frolova are pretty much guarenteed two spots but what about the other spots and host spot?
What "host spot"?

For JGP, no Russian lady is guaranteed 2 spots even after test skates. It all depends on how they do at their first JGP; if they win, they will be guaranteed a second spot. If they don't, it depends on how they do relative to each other. The fed gives out second spots to those who are most likely to make JGPF solely based on first outing results, regardless of potential. And then of course there is the Russian Cup results where a skater can earn a spot even if they weren't invited to test skates/weren't given an assignment initially. Not all talents are recognized at the beginning of the season, some are revealed later like Alena Kostornaia was. For the juniors there are plenty of chances, but also huge responsibility because assignments can be changed as the season progresses.

You're right, I was mistaken. I thikn that if they are smart about giving out assignments, this could be the irst time in a long while that the Russian girls sweep JGPF. I mean, Alysa Liu and Xianyi An will still be around but idk how they will measure up, we'll see. I'm goin gto predict that Valieva will dominate the season again

I dont quite understand that freaking out about Sasha infection. This disease will remain with us, its already too much spreaded and even WHO evaluate that in some time 70-80% of world population will be infected by SARS-CoV-2 and virus will circulate in world population till we all develop some level of immunity as against ordinary flu.
If we slow down virus spreading and produce a vaccine quickly, the numbers of infected will be much lower than 70-80%. That's what we're fighting for. Time.

The Russian girls swept the JGPF just last year, so it wouldn't be the first time in a while. I actually think that because of Alysa they're less likely to sweep than they were in 2017/2018 (where they swept both times). Its certainly possible, but it would take either Alysa messing up (like she did at the JGPF and Junior Worlds this year, so its very possible), or Daria getting a 3A (or quad), so that she, Samodelkina, and Valieva can all beat her. Or Maia. But I'm not yet sure that Maia and Sofia will be given higher PCS than Alysa (I'm not talking about my opinion just what I think will happen), so they would have to either match Alysa's BV or have Alysa make a mistake. Of course, this is all so far in advance that a million things could happen. With the girls out of training for a while, there's less time for Daria to get her 3A down or for anyone else to learn new quads. And we don't even know if the girls will be able to get new programs. But you're right that the Russian ladies will once again have an army of amazing junior ladies and a sweep is definitely possible.

It's not, actually. Last season, Kostornaia-Trusova-Kanysheva swept JGPF. The previous season, Trusova-Kostornaia-Tarakanova did. This season was more difficult (and next season will be as well) because Alysa Liu is a threat with her technical layout. It's harder to make predictions because bigger elements have a lot more risk. When Alena/Sasha/Anna were only doing 2A/triple programs, it was expected that they would go clean every time. But this past season, they had at last 1 error every competition. Same with Kamila and Alysa.

I think they might've meant "sweep" in the sense that there would be 6 Russian ladies in the final, which has never happened.

In this case, I definitely think it could happen. Valieva, Usacheva, Khromykh, and Frolova will be joined by Samodelkina, Petrosyan, and possibly Muravyeva. Just an insanely strong team overall and any 6 of them could definitely sweep the final.

But, I wouldn't say it's a guarantee either. I'm sure Alysa will be in the mix again. Another possible spoiler is Seoyeong Wi, who was very strong at Junior Worlds. If she can carry that momentum into next season, she'll be a contender for sure. I'm also very excited to see Xiangyi An and how she stacks up. It's going to be another very exciting JGP season, that's for sure!

I recognize life has to go on but right now that should be their the least of their problems.

I saw a good amount of jumping in those videos - glad to know I wasn't the only that was watching those thinking of the unfortunately people that live around them and are having to listen to the jumping, when I lived in apartments you could hear people making noise on the sides of you as well. Hopefully they live in ground floor apartments or there is like a basement area that they can go to vs. being rude to their neighbors

Yes that is what I meant, and I think the possibility is slim as well. Idk if Frolova is a guarentee in that group, and SEoyeong is going to be senior eligible but that doesn't mean she or Haein won't stay junior or have another few amazing Korean ladies inspired by Yuna come up. Or a dark horse that we didn't know much about, like how Frolova came in and became JGPF alternate and not many really knew about the Korean ladies except Young You, Yelim Kim, and Eunsoo Lim this season.

I do think the scenario you listed with Valieva, Usacheva, Khromykh, Samodelkina, Frolova, Petrosyan/Muravyova is possible though. The depth is amazing, and next season (2021-22) we'll have Akatieva and Berestovskaia to add into the mix

Oh yeah, that makes sense, but I still think if they were going to sweep the final, it would've been last year (the year with 5 Russians + Yelim Kim), and in fact they almost did, as Tarusina only lost out to Yelim Kim due to a tie break. Of course its possible this year, anything is possible. But with a healthy Alysa in the running, its just hard to believe she'd miss out on the final as the reigning JGPF silver medalist and JWC bronze medalist and having a quad and a pretty consistent triple axel. It's possible, but it would've been easier for the Russians to block Yelim Kim from the final than it would be to block Alysa. In fact, had Ksenia Sinitsyna skated clean at her JGP event in 2018, it would've been a sweep of the JGPF. However, after Alysa has gone to seniors, presumably in the Olympic year, there could be a chance again. Of course we have no idea what new stars will arise from other countries, and its silly to even think about what the Russian team will look like that far in advance but I will anyways :). Samodelkina, Akatieva, Zhilina, Berestovskaya, and Petrosyan will hopefully all be there, and thats a pretty good team so far.

Akatieva, Zhilina, Gorbacheva, Berestovskaya, as well as someone else who can shoot the next year. The wave of new juniors 21-22 may be crazy.

Watched some live streams with Triumph Akademy from their isolated training camp over the last couple of days. All the kids are jumping quads in the dry hall, Alina Gorbachyova leading the way.

Sof'ya Fedchenko seems quite ambitious with the top group of her Akademy, and one can presume hers and the other groups from Moscow are trying to aim for the same level, that of #TeamTutberidzeForProgress.

The race for tech, choreography, image expression and quality execution, and all this combined in great figure skating routines, is definitely on.

On the somewhat upside, flexibility work is easy to do quietly and wherever you're living and I wonder if some athletes will improve their spins and spirals after a stretch where they were bored enough at home they ended up doing 'excessive' amounts of yoga, pilates, and the like.
