2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

But they do pay for rink and gym time, right? I'd assume they'd pay for other equipment for their athletes. Like pucks and hockey sticks? Would they pay for someone's new skates? I'd assume there is a budget for costumes, which is why Tarakanova maybe had better costumes in the past. Or maybe the team has a special fund for this from shows and other fundraising?

Tarakanova claimed that her family had already invested $300,000 in figure skating. She named dresses as one of personal cost items. I have no clue but Alina's Cleopatra dress looks very expensive to me. I just said that I was happy that she can afford now any dress that she likes. If the Fed compensates her in full or even partially that's even better!

Lakernik: Japan Open marks a high competition in single skating for the new season

The vice president of the International Skating Union noted that fans will have an interesting season ahead of them, especially among skaters competing in the singles disciplines

MOSCOW, October 5. / TASS /. The Japan Open team tournament in Japan marked the high competition that single figure skating awaits in the 2019-2020 season. This opinion was shared with TASS by the vice-president of the International Skating Union (ISU) Alexander Lakernik.

In this commercial tournament held in a team format by the Japan Speed Skating Federation since 2006, three teams are participating - Japan, North America and Europe. The European team scored 614.73 points in the sum of men's and women's performances, Russians Alexandra Trusova and Alina Zagitova, Spaniard Javier Fernandez and Denis Vasiliev (Latvia) performed for the team. Second place was taken by the Japanese team (602.16), third - the team of North America (593.42).

“This season is interesting, because unlike previous years, much attention is paid to the competitions that are on the calendar before the start of the Grand Prix series - these are the challengers, Japan Open and other similar starts,” told Lakernik. “At the beginning of this season, a lot athletes claim first places, especially in women's single skating, where a new generation of figure skaters who have switched to senior rank has appeared. Everyone is interested in how they will compete against more experienced rivals."

At the same time, Lakernik noted that the results achieved at the Japan Open should be treated with restraint: "These are very interesting, beautifully designed competitions with a large number of spectators, they are distinguished by good organisation, this is a show, a commercial start, and I would have been more relaxed about the results - the season is still ahead. Athletes in these competitions compete for the team result, only singles take part in them, so you should not project it on all figure skating. "

The organizing committee of the tournament is responsible for inviting athletes. “Whom the Japanese invite, those are participating. For example, from Europe it would be possible to collect a stronger squad for men. But the Japanese side is trying to gather all the leaders to make it interesting. Last year’s world champions - Russian Alina Zagitova and American Nathan Chen", Lakernik explained.

Heading to Montreal

At the end of the men's free program, the European team fell behind the leaders - the North American team - by 58 points. The victory was won for the European team by Russians Trusova (160.53) and Zagitova (154.41). At the same time, the current world record holder, 15-year-old Trusova, for the first time in the history of female skating, at the tournament in Japan performed four quadruple jumps in one program - Salchow, Lutz, Toeloop in a cascade with a triple, as well as another quadruple Toeloop in combination with a triple Salchow.

The American Nathan Chen (189.83) won in the men, in second place Japanese Shoma Uno (169.09), in third - the US representative Vincent Zhou (167.64).

“Today, girls from Russia are in the leading roles, although they have competitors from Japan and the USA. In men’s skating, representatives of the USA are strong and begin to compete directly with Japanese athletes. If Yuzuru Hanyu would have competed, the results would be a little different but the Americans are very strong and count on the World Championships and the Olympics," told Lakernik.

"At the Japan Open, athletes took another step in the season - the Grand Prix, where the intrigue will unfold further, is already on the horizon. The main start are the March World Championships in Montreal, and all that will happen this season is just in preparation for it," - added the vice president of ISU.

Expert: Trusova shows outstanding complexity

MOSCOW, Oct 5 - RIA Novosti, Anatoliy Samokhvalov. Russian figure skater Aleksandra Trusova skates programs of outstanding technical complexity, and her compatriot Alina Zagitova holds her level as World and Olympic Champions, two-time Olympic pair skating champion, coach Artur Dmitriyev, told RIA Novosti.

Trusova on Saturday for the first time in the history of women's single skating performed four quadruple jumps in one program at the Japan Open competitions in Saitama, earning 160.53 points. 2018 Olympic and 2019 World Champion Alina Zagitova took second place (154.41). Both skaters are training in the group of Eteri Tutberidze.

Menshov: Trusova and Zagitova well done, the season will be “on fire”

“Trusova shows outstanding technical complexity,” Dmitriyev told over the phone. “Zagitova essentially has the same technical set, but she maintains her level of Olympic and World Champion. Of course, this season will be unpredictable in many aspects, if we already at the start see such complicated things."

MOSCOW, Oct 5 - RIA Novosti, Anatoly Samokhvalov. Russian figure skaters Aleksandra Trusova and Alina Zagitova performed very well at the Japan Open tournament, the season will be very bright, Konstantin Menshov, ex-champion of Russia in men's single skating, told RIA Novosti.

“These girls are great - both Sasha and Alina. The season will be “on fire,” Menshov told over the phone.“ Trusova makes an application to become the season's leader. Time will tell, of course, because after all quadruples take a lot of energy, but what she’s doing is something really cool. Maybe Sasha and her coaches will not put in quad quads over the course of the season. Why take such a risk? To win, Trusova will have enough in two, and certainly three of these jumps. In my opinion, there’s no sense in taking any risks ".

“As for Alina, she looks very dignified, she didn’t lose her jumps, but even added to them. Despite the fact that she’s grown up. She’s done well, she remains competitive despite her titles, and now everything will be decided at the competitions,”
added the specialist.

I just realized that Trusova's LP TES score at Japan Open (and her previous event) would have been the highest in the men's LP event at the 2006, 2010, and 2014 Olympics.

Not sure how much of that $300k is in the dresses but her parents and her coaches could have easily gotten simpler and most likely less expensive dresses than what she's worn, especially considering she's still a junior. Peggy Fleming won in simple but gorgeous dresses that her mother actually sewed for her.

Just rewatched Zagitova's FP....my first impressions were correct. Good jumps, she seems more confident but the rest is average or poor
Poor SS, posture, spins aside from the donut are weaker,, footwork is weak and she looks clunky and heavy on the ice

It's still the beginning of the season. No one wants to peak in October. I'm sure she will be much improved in a months time for her first GP competition. She's performed cleanly at the Test Skates and now her LP at the JO. That is a good starting off point.

Last season I feel like I spent the entire season posting - "she just needs time." She got that time and by the end of the season she was ready to fire on all cylinders. This season she won't quite have that luxury - she needs to peak twice. At Rus Nats (not even to win just to get on the podium) and Worlds.

I have faith in her and her team. She's come out well prepared. Just like last season until she got derailed a bit by injuries/puberty/pressure etc. I think she is past the worst of puberty. She seems to have stopped putting undue pressure on herself. A lot will depend on staying healthy and uninjured.

She has two great programs. Her LP has the potential for increased difficulty in strategic spots if her health and motivation permit. We'll see how it all turns out, but I feel safe in saying she will probably improve from her first performance this season. Again, health and motivation permitting.

OK, brief review of Alina's skating skills. What's important. Edges? Checked, Alina uses inside and outside edges through her programs regularly, also changes centre of mass as a part of the program, during stsq, choreo part and transitions. One foot skating? All those ultra difficult entries on one foot into jumps, often accompanied by some choreo element (like those charlotte into the jumps) followed by one foot exits integrated to the choreo again. Forward and backward skating? The same could be said here. Turns? Checked, also part of the transitions, no easy preparation for jumps. Effortless skating? Yes, checked, Alina is fast even with choreo moves. Overally this was a standard skating a fan would expect from a queen of figure skating when she is having fun.
So, my impression says "don't worry, be happy and share your happiness with all those nice people on this forum who doesn't keep any negative feelings towards the most succesful lady russian figure skating had till this day."

I’m not sure why so many people are complaining about how “low” Sasha’s PCS was. First, 63 is by no means a bad score. Second, while her TR score should’ve been much higher, she needs to be more expressive and make her programs less of a jumpfest to warrant higher PE, CO, and IN. And finally, the argument that she should receive much higher PCS than what she got as a junior is also odd, because while Sasha improved, she didn’t by THAT much. Plus, it’s not like her junior PCS was justified either...

I wonder did you really read messages carefully or just pretending to not notice inconvenient ones? :rolleye: People aren't complaining about her PCS (at least majority of them). However - people do complain about her GOEs (which is lower than Miyahara' GOEs on jumps - and she is not known as exactly good jumper, mildly speaking). But GOE's are entirely different thing than PCS and shouldn't be related, don't you think? ;)

I am just hoping that the GPs will have better judging. But if this continues during the GP season then it will be an issue because making it to the grand prix final this year is more important than ever for the russian ladies. Hopefully the GP series will have as fair of judging as 'fair' can get.

Poor Sasha deserves higher than 160 with all of her the content that she has. Hopefully Evgenia will get less incorrect URs too. And Anna will get better PCS.

Does anyone who the artists are for Sofia Samodurova’s Roxanne/Moulin Rouge FS? Its certainly one of the more bizarre covers of the song that I’ve heard!!!

Well Fleming's dresses being beautiful is a debatable thing of course. But the pointis made you an h ve arguably beautify outfits that don't cost a lot. I thikthekey is finding something that adds to the performance and enhances the program and presentation. Personally I would have preferrred Aina'scostume inturquoise rather than black.

Evgenia was sick; I wonder if she did Shanghai for the money? Training in Canada cna't be cheap. i wonder how she feels knowing she is the underdog. TSL and a lot of us see her behind Trusova and Zagitova. Then you have two more A's and Liza before getting to Evgenia. Forget Sofia and Maria and poor Leonova might not go to nationals. Oh my...

She’s definitely a fighter that’s for sure. Wonder how far along she is on the 4S, she’s going to need it this season. I think her BV is probably similar to Alena’s and if judging is fair, Alena should be far ahead of evgenia. And if Anna gets her quad consistent I don’t see Russia leaving her off that team. They know rika is a threat adding the quad this year, alysa is up and coming in a few years... not to mention one of the Korean girls (Yelim I think?) that can do a 3A now.
