2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

But what I do not get about certain posters, is the need to drag Evgenia's name when praising their favorite. Some can get downright nasty. Seriously. This is not a zero-sum game.
Me neither. Perhaps one example of trying to build someone up by only dragging someone else as if they were lacking nice things to say about their favourite.

When you have live music it will always take attention away from the skater, or at least it has in the programs I have seen. It has little to do with the merit of the musician or the skater, and of course, if you like the skater, that’s who you want to see, not the musician.

I think this is personal preference. I don't think it detracts, it just makes it more beautiful.

Some other examples when I think it was even better is Javi's Prometo ex during his show last December and Zhrnya's TAT anniversary performance of her 2017 Worlds gala. Give it a go, you might enjoy it ^^

What's with all the people riding tricycles?

I saw a Mountain Dew commercial with that going on also.

I didn't "get it" then, and I still don't. :scratch2:

Can Alina ride a tricycle without a license? ;) That's an inside joke everyone.

So great to see her and her compatriots enjoying their offseasons. So well deserved.

I’m way too old. I’d rather have the Ariana Grande thigh high plastic boots, and that’s not saying much:biggrin: I guess this singer is trying to wear ugly clothes?

I like costumes. Pretty costumes. Sparkly costumes. Maybe this Billie person can find some sparkles somewhere?

Billie Eilish confirmed that she wears ugly, baggy clothes to avoid being sexualised by the media. It's sort of her thing, and she's about 16 so it makes sense that she's afraid of that. Many media sources have sexualised female celebrities who are younger than her.

In real life, she's actually pretty as she wants to be. (Also rich as she wants to be. More power to her, I say!)

Oh, I'm not saying she's not pretty (and thank you @Karina for the information on Billie and her clothing choices:thumbsup:)

But I look through the prism of "skating fan". It's not gender based for me; I really really dislike the "Ross Dress for Less" school of men's skating outfits too. I don't want a skater to look like they grabbed some clothes out of their closet on the way to the rink. The Russian ladies, as far as I can tell, have done an excellent job of at least appearing to put some effort into their "look".

In no way do I condone sexualization of young teens. But you can get dressed up without sexualizing. And that really is a greater problem if a girl, singer or skater, believes that the only way to "dress up" is pretend sexy:confused: Or the only way to combat pretend sexy is to dress down. :(

But you can't skate in a sweatshirt, so I have hopes.... (although I shouldn't say that, there was Jason's god-awful onesie from his exhibition a few years back. :slink:)

I watched the broadcast of Fantasy on Ice last night and for the first time I am disappointed with the Russian ladies, all three of them. Compared to the other skaters in the show, they seemed less prepared. While Javi made a huge flamenco spectacle involving a singer and a dancer, Yuzu and Plushi gave 100% on the ice, Satoko and Rika showed their new and quite original programs, etc., etc, the Russian ladies looked as if they learned about the show two hours earlier and had to quickly think of something. I love Liza but I don't even know what she skated. There was mainly "hand choreography"; nothing special. Alina's version of Carmen seemed half baked. The live violin was amazing, but her performance seemed underrehearsed and not thought out well enough. Medvedeva probably performed best, but I really dislike the Ariana Grande program, the costume, the choreography, everything. She is a great artist, but even that doesn't save the choreo or the lack of it. Besides, she skated this program tens of times already in Canada and Korea, so she didn't have anything especially prepared for Japan.

I was very surprised, because at competitions it is quite the opposite - the Russian ladies have the most rehearsed performances, the most thought out costumes, hair, details, etc. Here I just had the feeling that they perceive the show as a vacation with some skating. That's ok, I know they need a break, but there was a huge audience, which probably bought expensive tickets and they deserved a little extra effort or something special. I don't watch figure skating for a long time, only for a year and I follow the ladies only, especially the Russian ladies. Yet, last night I enjoyed all the other performances but theirs.
It sounds like the Japanese girls were more prepared for this exho than the Russian girls were. But that wasn't the case at worlds the most important event of the season.

I suppose you are mainly disappointed in Liza and Zhenya. But they will be ready for next season as will Alina. Zhenya has injuries to fully recover from and Liza has probably not returned to pre illness form. Nothing to be concerned about. They will be ready for the season and they have 3 angelic assasins backing them up as well as Sofia Stasya etc. Good luck to other countries dealing with Russia's greatness at the top and overall depth. When next season is done people won't believe at what the Russinas have done and how many medals they won!

I agree with you, you can definitely look great without looking sexy, but unfortunately the media has sexualised young celebrities who are making zero attempt to look sexy. I recall some scandal about Millie Bobby Brown being posted in a magazine as the "hottest woman of the year" when she was 13...and her outfits were nothing close to hot or sexy. Because she was 13.

I don't know too much about Billie Eilish but I do feel bad that she goes out of her way to avoid this.

Lmao, that’s so 2019:) sure, that’s why she does it ;)
And Sia wears that weird wig, not because she wants to stand out from the crowd, but because she actually thinks that helps to hide her identity:)

I feel like Billie is Avril Lavigne of today, a rebellious teen with an artistic soul. A few years down the road she’ll disappear and teens of today will be like „do you remember Billie? What happened to her?“

On the topic:
I don’t think Alina will be cosplaying Billie or portraying Billie. :)

i don't think op was talking about the russian girls not being ready for next season. rather that they weren't prepared for a show where people paid money to see them. it's unprofessional to just show up to a show unprepared especially while the other skaters are trying their best (im not saying that this actually happened).

personally i thought all of the girls did pretty good, i liked all the performances

Glad they did good in your eyes.

I was just saying to Autumn it's only an exho. While they may not have been at there best it may have been experimenting time for the girls.

If she does not want to be sexualized, she should stop singing about seducing people's fathers.

Announcing a new routine through an IG post is just not enough to be considered prominent anymore. Literally everyone does it. Announcing a routine at a press conference during a major international competition is what I consider prominent. I have a feeling Daniil is literally going to make us wait until the last possible minute to announce anything about Alina's new numbers. :(

Given that Evgenia had two brand new costumes made for FaOI surely she planned on performing these numbers at this show all along?

They announced it on both Alina’s and Daniil‘s page. Alina has almost 650k followers. And it‘s an exhibition program as well, not a competitive one. I do consider that prominently because it attracted a lot of attention. And Alina loves Japan, I just thought given that, she‘d do it here. That’s all. But as I said, she probably had no time to practice it properly because she was on a well-deserved vacation and she‘ll do it during the later shows that are in Japan as well.

I think costumes might have been an issue as well. Billie Eilish is a bit of a special case because what she wears usually doesn‘t seem to be easily translatable to figure skating outfits. Personally, I hope Alina won‘t go for yellow as I‘ve seen very, very few costumes in that colour that worked. Red, however, definitely is her colour, she always looked great in it.

Team Tutberidze‘s Camp starts in June, I think we‘ll hear something about Alina’s programs then. If they have worked out the exhibition, they should have thought about the competition programs as well. Daniil is probably just waiting to make fans more curious. :)

Ultimately, we don’t know what Zhenya planned. I don’t know if you follow her on Instagram (or Misha) but based on her activity in the past, it was pretty clear what she was planning. The only question was the ”when“. Maybe you‘re right and she‘d wanted to skate to those programs in Japan for some time. I‘m just not sure about that. But that‘s speculation anyway. In the end, Zhenya has had four exhibition program already this off-season. Experience, One Million Roses, Beautiful Mess and 7 rings. I don’t know a lot about other skaters’ and their gala programs because I’m just not that interested but from the little I’ve seen so far, that’s far more than most competitive skaters do during one-off season. So, I don‘t even think it‘s a bad thing she skated those two programs again. We (as fans) are spoiled by her but it‘s really not reasonable to expect new programs every time she skates a different show.

Yes it's difficult to measure who did his/her best or not so I will go with, all did their best. We need to keep in mind also, that it's a different responsibility to skate under your crowd. Also different skaters have different schedules for they training and when to start work on new programs. Rika and Satoko where on camps for their programs and jumps, if I'm not mistaken. So it's reasonable to look more prepared. But that was not happened only because they felt more responsible but because of convenient timing. And you cannot expect from them to adjust their program to shows, I think whoever organize shows knows that.

I didn't follow all the girls closely during the past weeks but in Alina's case: she came from holidays late night/early morning and at 7 a.m. next day, she was on the rink to get her self prepared. She is doing 2 triple jumps at the show. If she didn't care, she would avoid to risk to do them and get injured by being under-trained. The choreography doesn't have the complicated steps and transitions of the competitive one, but has other new aspects and combined with the fact that the music is live the result is pretty good under the circumstances.

If she does not want to be sexualized, she should stop singing about seducing people's fathers.

...she's a teen, she should be able to express herself sexually. but that doesn't mean that she wants to be turned into some underage sex symbol.

like if someone wears a short tight dress because they want to feel sexy, obviously they don't wear the dress with the intention of getting sexually harassed and it's in no way their fault if other people harass them.

Can we please just stray from saying nasty things about Billie? She's essentially Alina's age and it's inappropriate for both of them. Let's not forget that she's an artist, and just because you don't like her art (or the way she dresses :scratch2:) you don't have to tell her to go do something else lol. Every generation of teens has a rebellious singer they connect with. Her songs are incredibly sassy and I'm enjoying her for that.

I recently watched an interview with her where she says that she's constantly changing as she's growing and so is her style. We should take that into consideration and perhaps think twice before attacking the personality of a skater because they're super young. They will change, and if they look "less sweet", that should honestly be none of our business. Lately we spend more time discussing skaters' lives than their skating.
