2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Alena’s skating is magic. She has that unnamed quality that just draws you in. Strangely, she reminds me of Yuna in that respect. Her skating is just divine. What a well deserved win today!

Re-read the posts.

I think coach always has the last say on everything, but RusFed and judges send their feedbacks, and you want to listen to them cause some of these judges will score you in competition. All skaters take these suggestions very seriously.

In the case of the 9/11 program, we don't know opinions from the influential people on that program, but even if they were negative, the coach ultimately chose to keep it. (again restarting a program from scratch in September can ruin a season, it can take a lot of time you should spend on other things)

So it isn't Rusfed's choice at all. They can give their opinion but it is up to coach and skater to ultimately decide what to do.

Not sure why they would have had any objections to Liza's original music though... as demonstrated this week it fits her style and what little choreography she does and is more entertaining than the bland "elevator" music it was switched to.

It's at least more accurate than someone's opinion 3 years after. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

RusFed itself doesn't care. Some members of the Coaches Council of RusFed may give their feedback, but it's not the Soviet times anymore, they can't force anyone to change the music/programme.

What are thoughts on Alena's UR call and PCS. I found both surprisingly low. The UR, I didn't even see any UR at all...the judging this season really is interesting.

I thought her PCS was decent for a senior debut.
I thought the second 3A was slightly under and the call was unlucky but fair enough. The tech panel called Liza's flip edge so they were consistent in harshness I suppose.

Agreed although let's say a judge tells you "i don't understand this music, i'd give you low components because of it" you can ignore the feedback (since it's just one person opinion) or change it fearing low scores.

In general let's remind that Mishin's group is well known for reworking programs: Liza's Peer Gynt changed like 3-4 times at least between 2 seasons.

I felt like the UR was borderline. I think the PCS was fair since it's her senior debut after all.

Judges real 'level of attention', quality (!), readiness, willingness, etc varies from competition to competition. If the controller videos were as clear as our TV picture, everything was clearly visible, despite the maximum speed, flight and amplitude of Alyona's triksels.
There wasn't anything to hide, and why should she, any judges remarks are welcome in the process of improvement?

Aliona showing us some humbleness in her post-fs interview! She said she doesn’t consider 3A to be her weapon, as other girls can learn it too and she might not land hers. She also talked about her teammates, showing her respect towards them and their hard work.
Wow, that’s the champion mindset!

Is there a link? Would love to hear it ...

Privately I'm hoping they were talking about how **** those medals look. They look like cheap plastic all the same coloured mug coasters
Aliona has to get used to ugly plastic things as awards. She is going to GP France after all :D

Kostornaya was considered the goddess of components. And she learned the triksel and does not lag behind Trusova and Shcherbakova.

Another victory for Tutberidze.

In the suburbs of Helsinki, one of the most prestigious Challengers, Finlandia Trophy, ended. A spectacular result was shown by Alena Kostornaya. Eteri Tutberidze's pupil jumped two triple Axels (the single one, however, was judged as under rotated, and in a cascade with a double Toeloop) and won the competition. Her result - 234.84 points - the fourth highest in history. Only Alina Zagitova (238.43 and 237.50 points) and Aleksandra Trusova (238.69) received more.

The second place was taken by Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva. She also performed two triksels. But she made several mistakes: she doubled her Salchow in the cascade, showed a wrong edge on the Flip and lost levels on the sequences and spins. As a result, she lagged behind Kostornaya by more than 22 points (over the sum of two programs). With a relatively equal application of technique.

But the point, of course, is not only Lisa’s mistakes. Right now no one in the world is skating like Alyona Kostornaya. And even the judges, who are used to holding back debutantes, admitted it. Evaluating the components, almost all were put +9 or more.

Russian figure skaters too quickly accustomed judges and fans to the technical complexity of their programs. This does not mean that the quadruple Lutz of Shcherbakova and the whole collection of quadruples of Trusova are now watched without admiration. We are just looking forward to the next step.

And it was just Kostornaya who did it first, combining in her free program “ultra-si”, amazing sliding and aesthetics in every movement. Just at the moment when the demand for artistic value of programs was finally formed in the world of figure skating.

Endless conversations about mature female skating, ISU reforms, in which jumps (quads and those that are at in the second half of a program) lost weight, strange proposals to increase the age limit of girls, are important indicators of how much everyone is tired of counting, and not just enjoying.

And still a little math: almost a year ago Alyona was already recording about 80 for her SP one and more than 150 for her FP. And in the final of the junior Grand Prix, she defeated Trusova and Shcherbakova. Without a triple Axel. Performing doubles so that in a personal meeting, even Kihira with her triksel would not have a single chance.

Answering the question of how she ended up in the Tutberidze group, where the technical potential of the skaters is so important, Alyona doesn't evade: “I saw what her girls were showing. And she also wanted to stand on a pedestal. ”

The fight with herself for the triple Axel stretched for several years. And it’s not over yet. Even at today's skating run - Alyona enters the jump with caution.

“She started jumping the triple Axel a long time ago, but, as I heard, she crashed on it a fair number of times and said her health is more expensive,” said Aleksander Volkov, a former coach of Aleksandra Trusova, in an interview. - I understand her because she is able to win a lot even without it.

And Daniil Gleikhengauz immediately after the victory in Finland thanked Alyona for the fact that she showed character and performed the jump.

Now the dream of big victories has become close to a reality. And one more thing: right after the transition to the Tutberidze group, Alyona began to learn the quad Salchow. But at some point she abandoned this idea. There is a feeling that this will not last long, and she will also show it. Without loud announcements and promises.

1. That's why I disapprove of Liza's behaviour. I like wittiness in a lady but not when a joke can be perceived as a direct criticism towards a competitor. I always liked the japanese ladies humble attitude. They always seem to accept defeat with grace, they respect their coaches even when they are wrong, and treat the opponents with admiration even when the judges are wrong. From the entire russian field, Eteri's ladies are the closest to this japanese mindset.

2. Unpopular opinion, but Liza lost more points on levels, bad spins etc... than on that 3F call and the judges are right with that. So please Liza more focus on components. Mishin got stuck in the old era of figure skating. Liza won WC title in a time when her rivals were not so manny and especially not so good as today.

3. Alena is so special we don't realise how lucky we are to witness her skating
