2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

It’s crazy that Bradie is going to the gpf instead of Evgenia. They are worlds apart with scoring and honestly Bradie is bringing a knife to a gun fight here.

An very unfortunate turn of events. Evgenia's LP is my favorite this season. Her interpretation and performance ability are back to her best and I dare say her jumping is even better:). The fact she is done 2 extremely high level performance of it makes Bradie's chance qualification a travesty.

Another day, another "this skater should leave Eteri" episode of season 3. Soon available on Netflix.;)

As expected, Alina skated clean and won her ticket for the GPF. Rika will fight the 4A as the defending champion. She’s amazing. It’s a pity, there’s only 6 spots, they should extend the number of candidates to 8.

So, I‘ve watched it all and I’m not as thrilled as I expected to be, given my favorite winning and all. I think everyone knows by now what a huge Aliona fan I am and yet today I thought the scores just weren‘t .. right. Her 3As both looked UR, with the first one being close to a downgrade, her lutz edge is flat and due to the mistakes her interpretation in the beginning wasn’t as sharp as I’m used to. And... she still wins the FS? Today, I thought Rika was better, even lutz-less. Aliona should have won overall, given the pristine SP and her BV advantage but the FS today was not as good compared to Rika. I can‘t say I‘m angry, I‘m just disappointed at the judging:

No ! calls for either Alina or Aliona and huge GOE even though their edges were clearly flat? Ignored URs for both of them? And that’s not even mentioning PCS. A FS where an Alina who was understandably mostly focused on the jumps and only showed some interpretation in the step sequence gets the highest scores for interpretation? Where she beats Aliona AND Rika in skating skills who are two of the best in the business? The only thing I thought was appropriately judged was Aliona’s composition mark being the lowest of her components. You can be angry at me for saying this but her FS, as much as she likes it (and as much as I have admittedly come to enjoy it) is just not a well choreographed piece. I‘m by no means a huge fan of Rika‘s FS but imo, it shows very well how you combine multiple music cuts without it becoming jarring and confusing. Today, I would have had the PCS: Rika > Aliona > Alina with a reasonable difference from first to second and an even bigger difference from second to third. And just to say that now, this has nothing to do with the skaters. Alina‘s FS is great and had she skated it like at test skates or JO, my ranking might have looked very different. But today she was focused on something else and that was getting the jumps done. More or less the same can be said for Aliona but she at least has good skating skills backing her up.

On any rate, it seems like the letter the ISU got worked. And that just makes me question the sport I‘m watching. For the records, I think the placements are absolutely correct and I‘m happy for Alina and Aliona, they did very well and their medals are absolutely deserved. But I just do not understand the scores being given for what I‘ve seen on the ice.

Now, I‘m not going to lie either. Given the huge scores Sasha gets even for a FS with two falls, I was not too unhappy that Alina and Aliona, who I think are both way better skaters, got scores that indicated that they can compete with Sasha if they skate cleanly. But two wrongs don’t make a right and I just felt that the judging as a whole has not been better since that “inquiry“ to look into the “inconsistent“ judging. On the contrary. Congratulations to Aliona and Alina, however, and well done. But I think it’ll take some time to stop caring about that. Sometimes I manage to block out the judging and just focus on watching the skaters that I love, but today that was not the case. I’m working on it, though, because the way things are now, it looks like nothing’s going to change in quite a while. And losing so many nerves over unfair judging that‘s never going to change would be.. quite stupid. But oh well. Sometimes I just can’t help it.

But again, congrats to the girls who are not at fault for any of this. Seeing them happy certainly makes me a bit more happy too. :)

7 members of Team Tutberidze in GPF in total! That’s going to be a busy time for coaches, I think all 4 will go to be able to put everyone on ice ;)

They will have to cut themselves in two halves to manage everything at JGPF/GPF and at home...

It's there. Verified by the certification agency Eteri & Co. Sixdown :yahoo:

When was it last time when one team had all four ladies in the GPF?

And we saw this picture being taken in the live stream, normally Eteri Georgiyevna likes to stay out of the picture, but after this bold (and somewhat brash) statement made at the beginning of the GP season, for her this result must also be both a relief and confirmation.

#TeamTutberidzeForProgress for ever ! And now off to a clean sweep of the GPF podium?

Plus, Alyona skating off into unknown territory turned out to be a discovery of a whole new universe of endless possibilities, her Star Trek isn't even ended yet ;-)

I agree with the whole post, although I think Alina really showed sharper SS than usual. But yeah, it seems like there is a big discrepancy between the former GPs and the latter two in judging, with the former calling everything as strictly as it bever happened before, and the latter with calling absolutely nothing (if we focus on the top skater groups). It will be interesting to see were judging goes in the next couple of months

Ahahah xD
It was Aliona should leave Eteri until she got her 3A. Now it’s Anna’s turn :D

Next episodes: "Kamila needs new {coach/choreo/dress/country}" and "Maya: The neglected one".

:laugh2:So true, this. You have to laugh at those developmental biology experts offering their unsolicited advice to Alёna, Alina, Alexandra, Anna, [___candidate of the week for leaving Eteri here___]. Only the very best interests of the skater are at heart... of course.

It will still be difficult, Rika is mighty competitor and if she will embrace the 4S properly, it will be still interresting. Still, my guess would be (it's only probability, not solid result):
1. Sasha (with a clean free she is truly unstoppable and even with one fall it is hard to catch her).
2. Aliona (with all three trixels she can be very close to sasha and if Sasha make a mistake, she can even win)
3.-5. now the hardest part, Rika, Alina and Anna
Anna still underscored a little in PCS, having relative weakness in her SP and underestimated by public, but nothing is certain, she can win just like last year on RusNats.
Alina. Never write her off, today's motto. She gained the "adrenaline" she asked for and she has motivation now.
Rika. With mastering 4S she will be gold contender, but while she stabilized her 3A, her competitions up to now proved she can be defeated by Alina, if she skates her best.
6. Bradie. Definitely the weakest, which of course doesn't mean she has to end last. Estimations are not everything and everybody, even the best, can make a costly mistake, like Alina yesterday.

So congrats to my girl Aliona! In the beginning of the season I was very worried that she may be left out of GPF and Russian team but now it seems that everyone else will have to be worried as she has very good chances to take over everyone.

Happy for Alina as well, she was bit more nervous than in Japan Open, but still did a good job. Also, is it just me or her jumps are higher and much sharper than last season?

About the judging: I agree that there were some mistakes that had been overlooked. It wouldn't have changed the total result, girls made the job for judges quite easy. Hope that technical panels won't be even more lenient next time as pointing out the mistakes is good for both athletes and sport itself.
