2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Is it possible that this season she might just attempt it in the SP?
To try to keep pace with Aliona and Rika's scores.

I really can't see how she could squeeze much more into her LP jump-wise.

It‘s possible but would Sasha Trusova really not include a jump if she can land it? Maybe she will ditch the 4S (it hasn’t been exactly consistent) and do two 3As instead.

I think given how hard 4s has been for her to compete successfully she may eventually sub it out if she gets 4F more stable, but prob not before she tries to pull a full Nathan Chen and do 5 quads.

She could drop the 4S for now (hasn't had much success with it recently) and put 3A instead. Example layout:
3A
4Lz
4T-3T
3F
4T-eu-3S x
3Lz-3Lo x
3Lz x

3F
4T-eu-3S x

I‘m sure she’ll eventually go to repeating 2 quads and 2 3A.

Why not go all in and do:

3A
4Lz
4T
3A+Eu+3S
4T+3Tx
3Lz+3Lox
3Lzx

Repeated triples: 3A and 3Lz. Repeated quads: 4Lz and 4T.

Anyone wants to compete with that?

I doubt she will ever try this layout this season, mainly because I doubt her 3A is more reliable in practice right now than the 4S she’s been training for 3 years. The main thing for Sasha is whether she feels her 4s difficulties are due more to not competing it for a year, or whether the jump is actually too hard for her now that she’s grown. I think it’s more likely the former, because when she gets the timing right in practice it looks as good as ever.

Maya Majestic, 70+ in her SP, without calls.

Agreed, it was the smoothest and cleanest skate I've seen from her. Hope she is driven by other girls success to the sky.

Edit to add: BTW among the seniors there will be Nastya Tarakanova today.

I get all the enthusiasm for Alena right now, but in the longer term beyond this season, I still put my money on Sasha and Anna.

Why? Body type. Whereas Anna and Sasha are svelte (or, in Sasha's case, athletic and toned), Alena is boxy. Tiny, yes, but boxy.

That's not an issue now, but as her hips begin to widen, there's a good chance of her becoming bottom heavy; the closest analogy for this might be Samodurova's body development over the past year, and we're all seeing how this has impacted Sofia's skating and jumps. Actually, now that I think about it, Lipnitskaya's body development might serve as an even better analogy for Kostornaia.

I get that this might not be a popular opinion - and it's far from a sure thing, as body development can be unpredictable - but, again, if I were betting long-term on any of them at this point in time, say for Beijing 2022, I'd be putting my money down on Sasha and Anna over Alena for this very reason.

You can't really rely solely on body type. Technique and inherent skating skills trump over body type. Lipnitskaya never had the proper jumping techniques just like Samodorova so the transfer of skills or muscle memory didn't happen with the body change. Just like having svelte/slim bodies, again without proper technique you won't be successful and some examples are Radionova and Pogoliraya. Tuktamysheva you could say also has a boxy body type but because she has awesome jumping techniques early on she didn't lose her jumps after puberty. Alena's basic jumping skills are filled with such power, height and distance that her muscle memory will survive body changes/growth. She's already grown from last year and with this new body she was able to turn her 2A to a beautiful 3A because her technique is sound and reliable.

Learn your jumps as young as possible with solid foundation and proper technique and they will stay with you your entire career. Maintaining a properly acquired jump through physical changes is easier than learning it once your growth phase has ended. Competitive drive also helps a lot in motivating both trainers and skaters to put in the hours and hard work needed.

Which is why we see so much ultra-si right now in the young Russian skaters.

Yes- I had forgotten about Alysa. She’s going to be exciting to watch

Any chance of Kamila Valiyeva having acquired a triksel too in the meantime? #TeamTutberidzeForProgress isn't know to brag, when a skill is premiered on their social media, it is competition ready ...

Idk, probably, though I‘m no fan of her skating. I do find her personality endearing and like her charming skating. But I think her technique‘s even worse than Shcherbakova‘s on the 4Lz and that‘s saying a lot. And the 3A doesn’t exactly scream quality either. I think she has a lot of potential but like with some of her Russian rivals I wish she‘d focus on developing proper skating skills and jump technique before scrambling to include the ultra-c elements in her programs. But she’ll be a threat for sure, let’s see what will happen at the JGPF and who will end up winning between her, Sinitsyna and Valieva.

I remember them posting Alina doing quads in a harness. Does this mean Alina has the quad also?

I knew this was coming and I‘m not surprised at all about it. Well done to Sasha, what a brave girl. Unstoppable indeed. :)

I have to say that I‘m strangely relieved about it. At least I won‘t have to desperately hope Aliona can somehow beat her after this. The sport as well has now officially (if it hadn’t before already) changed. This is a new era of ladies skating. For better or for worse, everyone has to decide on their own. A ladies event like the men‘s (there’s a reason why I barely watch men anymore) is not for me personally, so I know that unless the rules change, I‘ll leave this sport with my favourites (Zhenya and Aliona) and save a lot of time and money in the process. I cannot lie, I‘m a bit sad about it all, figure skating, and especially the ladies event, has become a major part of my life. But the direction the sport is now heading into does not appeal to me on any level. What a day for those who enjoy skating that way, though! Sasha is admirable for her bravery, spirit and determination. She will win everything this season and in the future and it will be well deserved. I will not lose hope that maybe one day what I value in figure skating will be valued more again, but until then, kudos to Sasha! I‘ll try to ignore scores and placements as best as I can and just watch the skaters I love instead. But her incredible athleticism and mindset can and should certainly not be denied!

Alina has said that to even start training quads seriously she has to lose some weight so I assume that she isn't close yet. The last post I remember is from last season, after RusNats or Euros.
