Yeah, I agree. It'll be really close, which is exciting. I went into the gpf thinking "Of course Sasha will win, there's no competition." But now there's real competition.

Man, all the skating on this weekend is at an awful time for me 
plus Golden Spin is letting me with with no Livestream! But yaaaay Liza won! I'm a bit relieved she didn't do the 4T 'cause I want to see it when she goes for it in competition.
The one she did in the warm-up was so boss! Say what you will about her, but Liza is the Empress of Jump Technique
Sad to see Sofia didn't make the podium, but hey at least she got third in the FS. I hope things will start looking up for her soon.

Gymnastics is a high-impact sport as well (some would argue it's much tougher than skating), but training methods and new equipment have made it a sport for young adults rather than for little children. Case in point, the oldest competing gymnast has recently qualified to her 8th (!) Olympics at the tender age of 44, while being a vault specialist, the hardest apparatus on the body, whereas the 2020 AA Champion will win at 23 (that was considered ancient as recently as 10 years ago).
No one can predict how current skaters will evolve but I have no doubt that Trusova will be landing quads at 19.

Aliona, Alina and Anna were fantastic! The right top three after the SP. I'm especially happy for Alina who is doing pretty amazing for a skater who has already won everything. We need more of her passion in this sport. Also happy for Anna who was seen as the weakest of the 3-A girls, but proved that she is a tough competitor! And my absolute favorite lady skater Aliona Kostornaya keeps doing triple axel consistently! I really hope this girl becomes world champion some day.
Fun fact, 3-A girls all have wings for their FS setup: Anna as a firebird, Aliona as a vampire and Alexandra with her Dragons! I wonder if this is a coincidence or team Eteri did this on purpose.

We don't know, but you might be very much correct here .... One of the secrets and greatest assets of #TeamTutberidzeForProgress is they develop their skaters through staging of difficult and challenging programs for each of them independently, but clearly sticking to some overhead master image. Perhaps this year's theme was wings?
The team puts great thought in routine design, creation of complete images, music selection, even the costumes, to make everything look coherent. There is no better team in the world right now, and to judge by the way their juniors and novices are developed, they will continue to elevate figure skating to a whole new level in the coming years.
Let's hope their skater will last and be able to fulfil their personal dreams.

“I would rather give Zagitova higher ratings” Goncharenko - about the short program in the Grand Prix Finals
Inna Goncharenko, Merited Trainer of Russia, in an interview with SE, evaluated the results of the first day of women's competitions in Turin.
After the short program, Alyona Kostornaya leads the way, setting a world record (85.45).
- Inna Germanovna, many events took place in 30 minutes, what struck you the most?
IG: Two girls made a big impression. First is Alyona Kostornaya, who performed under the first number. Opening competitions is always difficult, and she has this first experience of the Grand Prix Finals at senior level. But she skated impeccably and very easily. And earned just awesome points.
The second is Alina Zagitova, who came out last. Again, a very difficult position, when everyone had already performed. But she showed a skating run worthy of an Olympic champion. Everything was there - professionalism, fighting qualities, the ability to assemble. Good masterful adult skating.
- Was the risk of Aleksandra Trusova justified? 14 points lag before the free program.
IG: I think yes. She is very young and works for the future. Such complex elements must be run in at competitions. She is a maximalist, coaches support her. So well done, fighter. She understood everything that she needed to jump the triple Axel in order to achieve something in the short program. Did not work out. It’ll be okay next time.
- Five quadruples (planned) in the arbitrary - with what word to describe it?
IG: Ambitious, very bold. Let's see how it goes.
- 14 points from the leader can be recouped?
IG: If she'll deliver a straight perfect skating run on high energy to win over the judges ... After all, the components will play a big role. When you skate "clean", on the strongest charge, it affects everyone.
- What happened to Kihira? Pressure from the abundance of Russians? Acclimatisation?
IG: Pressure is unlikely. She is an experienced athlete. But today she was slow, sluggish. I think the peculiarities of adaptation really affected her. Today she was not like herself. To fall limp from a cascade ... Apparently, she just couldn't.
- How do you evaluate the judging today? All about the case?
IG: Very adequate, yes. The only thing I would have given Alina more 'components'. That she had somewhere like 81 points. At least I would like it so much (laughs). According to my inner feeling, her performance struck me. But in general, the judges noticed everything and reflected, if there were errors, no discomfort.

With 3 quads, Anna definitely has a great chance. But you think Sasha will only be third (or fourth)? She‘s got 5 quads planned. Last time she was behind by a lot after the SP (junior Nats) she became angry and landed her FS layout cleanly. I think she‘ll do the same, and even if she doesn‘t entirely, 3-4 quads already should be enough to challenge for the win. I agree Alina has a real shot at a medal if someone makes a mistake but I really doubt that someone will be Sasha.
I know little about the ins and outs of gymnastics but what is it that encourages their athletes to last longer and is it something that skating can emulate? I find it hard to believe that it was just an age limit raise?
Also, the older gymnasts, are they still winning medals and dominating the sport? (I know Simone Biles is but others) because Alina and Evgenia are still winning medals at major competitions and are considered top skaters yet for some reason people consider them has beens and should retire.
Perhaps the actual problem is that the sport needs to increase in popularity to incentive staying even if you're not world number 1?

I don’t think it has anything to do with the age limit in gymnastics. I just think less juniors end up doing well as seniors due to injuries. I actually think injuries are a bigger factor in gymnastics than in figure skating. The gymnasts who make it as seniors are more robust and they continue their careers because they are relatively healthy and there is no one in the pipeline to replace them. I think a lot of young gymnasts quit, too, because they don’t have a healthy training environment. That was the reason why the United Kingdom’s Catherine Lyons retired before she could make a splash as a senior.
