2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

If this happens and as long as Alena recovers by Euros, I think that she should be put on the team. She has the short program and total score world record. In addition, she is undefeated this season. Even if Alena doesn’t jump her triple axel in her short program, she can still score close to 80 points if she is clean. Now if Zhenya lands a quad salchow at Nats and it is consistent in practice, then that will make things a little more interesting. Team Eteri and Aliona are probably trying to compete at Nats though after what happened last season. They probably won’t want to take the chance.

Do not talk now about Alena. This girl is on her own wave.
Our life is a game. Yeah ... beautiful, he knows how to one hit in two holes at once)))
And who is our player?

Like in an old joke.
What are your plans for January 1?
- Sledging.
- And if the snow does not fall?
- This, of course, will upset me - but it will not stop ...
The eggs are not just in a vise - they are already in the refrigerator.

So if Alena is out what happens if Liza scores third behind Anna and Sasha? Liza could even land a quad combo but still place third. I’d assume they’ll send Alena over Liza even if she’s in the top three. I just can’t imagine how much it would suck for Liza place third, land a quad combo, and be denied a shot at worlds for the second year running.

We can only hope and wish for Alyona Kostornaya to 'kill it' in the Nationals (and Aleksandra and Anna too, obviously) and leave no room for the other competitors to put any doubts in the minds of this 'coaching council'.

However, Russian National Championships may be the biggest hurdle in getting assignments, the actual World Championships, and to a lesser extent Europeans, are still in the future, with permanent chance of changes in the composition of the contestants from Russia.

Where are these Aliona is injured rumours coming from???? Just because she was not seen in a clip that was like a few seconds long? Much Ado about Nothing imo

Unfortunately, our eyes are crying. BUT THIS IS IN THE PAST

Agreed. But nothing is certain.

Looks like we need to wait until Russian Nationals results to see who will best be eligible for Euros, then Worlds. Might be some differences depending upon who is/is not totally healthy? I hate to see anyone sent to (especially) Euros while fighting a possible injury, when a few weeks of rest could enable that person to better perform at Worlds. Fact: Euros does NOT require trixel/quad jumpers from any nation, including Russia, in order to make the European-only podium. Worlds does! I notice that we have five high-level skaters (and possibly one or two others that do well at Nationals) who could possibly split those two competitions among them--one skater would do both, two others, Euros, and yet two others, Worlds.

This has zero to do with wishing to see 'my favorites' (as if I had any--I just adore all the Russian girls/ladies!), it has to do with who is healthy enough at the time of each event best to deliver full content. I won't even suggest those I feel should be sent to which event. Just maybe, the same three will do both--but if such isn't in the best interest of any skater struggling with a niggling injury, that really may not be the smartest idea.

This is true, great post! Worlds is the most important, so skating injured at Euros is a bad idea. I know for sure that this time around I‘m 100% biased so I‘ll stay out of this discussion as much as possible. I know I won‘t be able to keep my wishes out of it because I do have clear favourites and I really don‘t want to make unfair claims because of that. Really, Russia has so many talented skaters and they‘d all deserve a chance to prove themselves.

If Aliona isn‘t healthy, she should skip Euros and have the others skate there. Whoever that will be, I‘ll cheer them on. :)

Where does your information come from? All is well. light damage. Move on...

I don‘t have any more information than everyone else here. The rumor came from her fanfest, people said a commentator mentioned her having a problem. I do hope Aliona is fine, of course but thing is... in the past when someone was rumored to be injured, it usually turned out to be true. The most recent case would be Kamila where everyone was quick and fervent to deny the injury rumors. Well, few weeks later and we find out she won’t jump any quad because she’s recovering from just that injury that never even existed to some... Which is why I‘m worried for Aliona and said that IF she really is injured, she should skip Euros. Believe me, I want nothing more than to see her there. So if she‘s alright, I‘d be thrilled to see her compete at Nats and Euros. But her own health and career is definitely more important.

What’s this about Tuk being ahead of Med? Isn’t Med’s season best better than Tuk in both SP & LP? Also we saw 1 clip oh Tuk doing 4toe, will this actually happen?

That's The $64,000 Question!

I commend liza at her age for continuing to get better and doing the toughest moves possible.

Technically yes, you'd have to think that Tuktamysheva with quad toe and triple axel should beat Zhenya. I think Liza will try at least one quad toe in the long, but don't expect 2 quads and 2 3as.

I understand all the talks about artistry but the technical gap starts to become big at this point.

At the same time you know Medvedeva is pushed way more than Tuktamysheva for a lot of reasons.

I like both, but honestly i hope Liza gets one last chance to go to Worlds, she has been working like crazy since last year to make it happen, and the Federation hasn't given her any favor so far.

I'm also rooting for Gubanova at this Nationals, since media and CSKA have really tried to take her down, depicting this image of the bad girl, at the same time in these 2-3 months she came to Rukavicin out of shape and worked a lot to get back to her previous form: her last outings were very solid, and she never looked unruly.

Among all russian ladies she's also one of the very few who is looking more mature, i like her short program quite a bit.

Oh, I thought everyone was in consensus that Anna has the better musicality. It's been obvious for a looong time.

Really? Because I, as a dancer myself, saw the opposite. Alena knows to be more subtle with her movements and make the somewhat ridiculous choreography less so. Look first at Alena and then at Anna; Alena's dance looks more sleek and modern. She understands the highs and lows of the beats and choreography. Meanwhile, Anna is all ATTACK. She's less subtle and emphasizes every movement, to the point that it is looks almost laughable? She is obviously the most eager one though.

I 100% agree with your assessment.

Also I don’t know that one random filmed dance during an off ice practice session is a true reflection of ability.

Some of them could have been going through the movements to get the cardio and not really giving a performance.

Exactly.
Alena is also very aware of how she should present herself, both on and off the ice. Just look at the difference between her and the others after the halfway point!
