2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

We never could see all three Aces performing flawlessly at the same time.
To compare them we need an all-good for all competition...

I just rewatched Anna's Skate America FS and want to say what a complete package she is. She has quads, all 3 types of triple-triple combinations, fast centred spins, flexibility in her spins and spirals, posture, air and landing positions, and incredible interpretation and performance. She's not just musical, she is also expressive in her entire body and face. Anna's performances are so genuine and sensitive; each one is different from the last and she's extremely versatile having done jazz, lyrical, "character", and classical pieces, though I do have to say classical is her best (last season's Rondo Capriccioso and this season's Firebird). Very few skaters can do what she's done as classical pieces require interpreting actual notes and phrases in music rather than a character/genre piece. She also feeds off of the energy of the audience. She really has it all.

I have to admit when I first saw her, during the first season she did dream catcher I believe 2 seasons before her international debut, all I saw was sensitivity and I thought: here's another tiny artist who is going to get buried in all the field of technically talented juniors. Her jumps were teeny tiny, her spins while flexible were wobbly and travelled so much, and her bent tano arm was really an eye-sore. But here she is now with bigger triples and huge quads, fixed spins, and straight rippons. All while keeping and improving on her artistry and flexibility. Even though I loved her last season, her un-pointed toes and sickled foot still bothered me. But this season I see she's pointing her toes more and turning out her feet. I love that she always acknowledges her issues in post-skate interviews; it makes sense as she's been steadily improving. The only thing I'd like her to improve on now are her skating skills. Every skater has their weaknesses, and imo that's Anna's weakness; if she can develop skating skills like Alena/Tarakanova/Valieva, I think she'd be absolutely perfect.

It's also been nice to see more of her personality and character this season. The interviews really highlight her approach to the sport her competitive mindset. And the clip where she was comforting Sasha after she won nationals was quite nice. All this knowing she broke her arm and leg while she was very young, missed her first international season, and chose to remain in the sport after her parents urged her to quite, makes me like her more. May the best skater win Euros and Worlds, but I'm definitely rooting for Anna to have her best skates and win a title or two :).

Very sweet words about Anna, and without detracting from other skaters as well. Nice to read.

The way Sasha can thread jumps in so jumps become choreography is incredible. It's just breathtaking to see in the practice today where she does the 3F and 2A. Good luck to all!

So probably no triksel from Aleksandra? We'll see in a couple of hours ...

For those wondering, here is the link posted in Sasha’s fan fest by GINO, I really like her new program layout. It is starting to look like a more balanced program in terms of choreography and jumps. You can also tell that her arm movements are softer now than they were before.
I really enjoyed this. It looks beautiful.

Well all 3 performed well enough. But I have to say, the scores were a bit....generous. Especially for Sasha, and Alena too.
But whatever, we know how scoring works.

It's gonna be a close fight in the Free. Nothing is decided yet, I think.

Sasha's scores were very well deserved.

Usual but still strange sour grapes about 3A's scores. Alena was outstanding and scored lower than at GPF. Anna's 77+ with 3Lz-3Lo in the second half is quite conservative. She was breathtaking. Why complaints then? Sasha had the best performance of this SP so far and this is the second half of the season. That's why there is nothing criminal in her 1 point pcs growth vs. Skate Canada. And GOE wise she is 1 point below Skate Canada. Well, she lost it on axel - the rest is the same.

What's wrong with you, people? I am talking mostly about competition chat but splashes of it came here as well.

Congratulations to Aliona, Anna and Alexandra on their lovely SP performances at their first Euros! I thought they all skated very well, though Aliona had a slightly rough landing to her 3A (by her standards) and made me catch my breath. The new (is it new?) ending, that puts her under the judges' noses, worked very well, I thought, and gives her the time she needs to make sure she's spot-on for the wing beats at the end. With Sasha's 2A, I wonder if her landing was a turn out like that because she had so much momentum. She still remains the best troll I have seen, and I will never not laugh in joy as she hops across the ice. I thought Anna was close to foot perfect, though; she did seem to finish behind her music, which is unusual for her, but perhaps that was an effect of the applause making it hard for me to hear the final notes.

At any rate, the three of them did a super job, and performed beautifully and with the polish of much more seasoned athletes. I hope they get a good night's rest, and wish them the very best of luck for the free tomorrow!

I assume you're referring to me as one of the sour grapes . Well I just voiced an opinion. For me Alena's jumps were not quite like at GPF or RusNats SP, a bit shaky landing on the 3A and combo compared to her standards. Anna's Lutz still has a flat edge, even though I know no one is called for it any more. Sasha had a mistake on her 2A and received a Season's Best like come on...
They are the best in the World yes, but I hope that doesn't mean you are not allowed to criticise anymore and only praises are allowed...

PCS scores for 3A compared to GPF

GPF/Europeans

Kostornaia 35.97/36.02 - +0.05
Shcherbakova 34.55/35.17 - +0.62
Trusova 32.80/34.42 - +1.62 (had a fall at GPF)

Interesting. So Kostornaia is at the same level. Shcherbakova and Trusova are bettering their PCS scores. Let's see if this trend is the same in the free.

I thought I wouldn't be able to watch live, but I ended up watching during my class (apologies to my professor )

I think my favorite part of watching the 3A compete against each other is that you literally never know who is going to win. It could be any one of them on any given day! Sure, there's quite a gap between them now, but the competition is far from over. I cannot wait to see who walks away European Champion tomorrow, it's going to be so exciting!

Yes it's exciting isn't it?
If Kostornaia is clean and the others have mistakes, she wins.
If Anna lands all 3 quads and have a UR on one of them, she wins
If Sasha is squeaky clean and Anna isn't, she wins.
