2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

.. and yes, it makes me extremely frustrated and pissed seeing all those kids in the major competitions, while the world and Olympic champions Liza, Alina and Evgenia sit at home watching television. It's stupid and infuriating.
I don't mind the kids there as long as they are good, but there should be all of them. Let six of them compete...

Making Grand Prix the main prize and most prestigious event. Just like in all other sports. But figure skating is a very slow reforming body, so there is no hope for a change soon.

Actually, I think the sport is moving in that direction, although at a glacial pace. The problem is that you can't just wave a magic wand and declare, "OK, from now on the Grand Prix will be more important and prestigious." Unless some billionaire comes along and offers a ten million dollar prize, the series will have to be content to grow according to its natural measured stride, and hope that the popularity of figure skating in general is remains strong enough to support it.

That said, it would be cool if there were a great uprising among skating fans demanding to see more Medvedeva, more Zagitova.

So how much money do they get for WC?

Sasha probably introduced them to one another because this season she and Deniss had the same assignments (Japan Open, Nepela, Skate Canada, Rosetelecom, Europeans), so they already knew each other.

Considering my username, these photos really made my day yesterday :)

Ahh, thanks for the explanation! So Sasha and Deniss are old friends already!

Those photos totally made my day too! :luv17: Hopefully we'll get more cute photos from Worlds!

See, that's the point. If we wanted to advance Manitou's proposal we could do so by giving ten million for winning the Grand Prix Final while keeping the prize for Worlds at fifty thousand ($US). That way all the big stars would be all in for the Grand Prix, leaving Worlds to be contested by the national champipns of the less prominent national federations.

Nop. You cannot sell such a tournament to TV.
There is a problem with tennis shows too where two competitors spend 2+ hours but at least it works well with advs.
You can sell a lot of tennis shoes and court time etc, but how many skates you can sell after ISU WC?

Football World Championship (soccer Mundial) grabs a lot of attention, but the ice-hockey WC takes maybe 1% of the same. Hot season sports vs cold season sports.

I know, there were several threads already about that. The point is it's difficult to remove the quotas from the Worlds, but what actually IS POSSIBLE is increasing the range of Grand Prix. Making Grand Prix the main prize and most prestigious event. Just like in all other sports. But figure skating is a very slow reforming body, so there is no hope for a change soon.

I would not separate GP and worlds, but why not to transform GP into qualification for the worlds. Who qualifies he qualifies, without the limit of entries per country.

Watching these transitions under a different flag, my feelings double. On the one hand, I am happy for these young girls who have received new opportunities for their international career. On the other hand, it will be sad if it is like in the biathlon of Russian women, where the ex-Russians Domracheva and Kuzmina become the winners of the World Cup and OG, and girls who speak for Russia cannot.

Russian FS is perfect example what Russia as a country can achieve if talented people will be able to advance their careers, So it's not becoming Biathlon anytime soon

Russian FS, due to the nature of Figure skating in Russia has strong immunity against that, with so much competition among schools it creates result driven environment, not the swamp what is Russian biathlon Union. School needs results to stay in the business and they need good coaches. So even if someone pulls Tikhonov and tells 'Domracheva' of FS that they are getting expelled, most they can is expelling from their school while there are other schools minutes away.

If you are russian biathlete, you may have to leave because situation in Russian biathlon isn't good enough for you, while only Reason to leave Team Russia is if you think you aren't good enough to make it to National team. Chances that somebody like that will turn into a legend is close to 0.

Random, but:
Since we’ve seen Trusova internationally, I don’t think she’s missed even one competition due to injury. That’s 2 and a half years of difficult jumps and no injuries serious enough to stop her from competing. Pretty incredible. Maybe her body is really strong?

I don't think it's a good idea, it would be completely dominated by several countries. A few "wild cards" for the best non-nominated skaters would be better IMHO... Thus we could see really the best skaters and smaller countries still could participate..

I remember one of Sasha's interviews she said she had never had a serious injury related to jumps. The only one she had was her leg stabbed by nearby skater during group spin lesson at very young age.

Look, the international skating union is hurting their sport by not having its best skaters there. The way tennis has their best tennis players and golf has their best golfers.. the ISU has Rules to spread things around where a lot of mediocre figure skaters get to perform at major events. Ahead of great skaters and performers from loaded countries. But it is what it is. And trying to get the ISU to change this is like spitting into the wind.. Do these jabronies at the international skating Union really think? They have a better world championship. Going down with Kazakhstan having three spots and Russia only having three spots? Is lilbet can't go to worlds give Russia her spot not someone from Turkey. Now I only want more flexibility from the ISU Because there are many fewer spots in figure skating advanced than there are in Grand Slam tennis tournaments for instance. There should be a certain amount of set spots for these figure skating events. And then with a chance for five or six spots for those who qualify. Buy World standing or season's best or whatever.. The sport of figure skating is not better for not having Zhenya Alina and Liza in these events..

Maybe they succeeded to clone Sasha?

She's a Cyborg... with a warm human heart :ghug:

I really like the contrast with her powerful ice appearance and her sweetness.

In Skating, federations count much more than athletes.
I personally don't care where a skater is from.
I only care about the emotions i get when (s)he's on the ice.

They will just wait for some more ladies to catch up enough to Russia's best and they will say "Figure skating has never been so good" while, like today, there will be deserving girls at home missed by the fans.

To be honest, figure skating is completely dominated by several countries even now, which is not rare in many other sports as well. My propose could work with the details like this to provide some "diversity". But look at Europeans, where for many skaters 3S+2T was nearly impossible combo to do it clean, while there are numerous skaters who are much better and can't go because of the max. 3 entries quota. More diversity was possible just because some 5 or 6 russian skaters represented another flag, of which most still train in Russia, Ekaterina Kurakova is an exception. Where is the sense in the system, where countries don't train their own skaters on the necessary level, just buy some "mercenaries" from elsewhere do defend their national pride.

How important is it to figure skating to watch skaters from Solomon Islands and Bahamas?

How important is it to figure skating to watch skaters from Solomon Islands and Bahamas?

Very important. Who knew that we would have such charming and wonderful skaters from Mexico:clap: what if they could grow the sport in that large and important country:scratch3:

But of course that has little to do with the Russian Ladies. Folks can complain about the make up of Worlds until the end of time and it won’t change. So best to cheer for the lady of your choice in whatever competition they compete in!

Ladies short program begins at 5:25pm Russian time, I think? And Eastern time in the US is 8 hours behind Russia, right? So the junior ladies short program for nationals will begin at 9:25am eastern time, is this right?

Anastasiya Shabotova skated cleanly in her free program today at Ukraine Junior National Championships. No triksel, for 118.52 and 178.99 total, the clear winner 30 points ahead of her competitors.

So she will likely compete for Ukraine in Junior Worlds and will perhaps meet Varvara Kisel' skating for Belarus?
