2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Any figure skaters here?!

from the last interview of Kurakowa

– Дочитать три мотивационные книги. Как следует подготовиться к ЕГЭ. Не растерять форму: на полу напрыгивать много тройных акселей и четверных, чтобы крутка была хорошая…

I can imagine doing triple axel on the floor, but how on the earth is one supposed to jump moving backwards on the floor?!

Salchows and toes can be trained on the floor as well, but on the first look they appear very similar to axels.

I think it was irresponsible for Evgenia to travel to Japan under these circumstances, but I doubt she means to hurt anyone by doing so.

Sasha can't jump quads on the floor; Tuktik in her interview says it's practically impossible to jump any triples at home; and Katyusha "jumps multiple 3A's and quads on the floor for better spin"? :scratch2:

I actually don’t blame her as much for the travel given how much Japan downplayed the virus early on, likely to prevent cancelling the olympics. If people were still planning to travel to the olympics this summer it makes sense that she would believe the shows would still be happening.

Now the cherry blossom thing I do hold her responsible for. Now that the government is telling people to avoid certain things, she should be respecting this and as a respected athlete and celebrity she has the power to set a good example for others. I would respect her more if she wrote an apology, but that might not be best for PR as it brings more attention to the matter. I do think it will die down in time and she’s not the first 20-year-old to disobey social distancing guidelines. But she should definitely learn from this and be more considerate of others, especially as a guest in another country.

Around the time she travelled things were getting worse and they actually declared an emergency in Japan a couple of days after

As for apologies, good luck with that... she is posting stuff like this instead:

So this actually brings up something that confuses me - the Olympics were postponed about a week before she left for Japan. Originally I thought that maybe it had to do something with contractual obligations, but none of the other international cast members or the choreographer (Yuka) left & both she and her agent have made comments stating that it was her & her team's decision to travel to Japan in advance. What are the chances that the Olympics would be cancelled yet an ice show slated to start ~1.5 months before would still go on? TBH I feel like the decision to go to Japan in the first place was a poor one.

What did confuse me was that none of the other cast members went, they all seemed to know that it was going to be cancelled. Another thing that confused me even in Kostornaia's interview where she said that had they been infected they were young and would recover but right now a lot of young people are dying, if you are young and able to get your hands on a test then you're most likely having severe symptoms. And we don't yet know if this virus has permanent effects.

As for Medvedeva, I just don't understand how she didn't know that the show was goig to be cancelled. Was she just going for a vacation in Japan? Not a wise time to do so. But literally the Olympics had been postponed, every other show had been cancelled, worlds had been cancelled - she and her team should've known? Logically, her own rink had been deemed unsafe and her own rink doesn't even have hundred of people sitting together in an audience like a show would. Not all are privileged to have a safe home to stay in during these times, and she does so she should've stayed there.

Having said that, I don't understand why the video of her in a park is a big deal. People are still allowed to go outside and she wasn't coming into contact with anyone else, though it makes me wonder who was filming the video for her.

It's golden week in Japan, when people usually travel to prefectures to see sakura and to visit their families. The government in Japan cannot constitutionally mandate a lockdown but has asked all the people in Japan not to travel to see sakura and to visit their families in order to keep the spread in check (there is a video of the prefect of Aomori, where Medvedeva is currently staying, pleading people not to go out of their home in order to save the quite elderly population of his prefecture). Hence why a non essential trip like hers, in a time when people cannot go out, has been met with disappointment by the Japanese.

but right now a lot of young people are dying, if you are young and able to get your hands on a test then you're most likely having severe symptoms.

Where do you get this information from? "A lot" is of course an elastic term. The same amount can be a lot or a little, depending on the number to which they are related. As a rule, young people have easy courses or remain symptom-free. Exceptions prove the rule. Of course, young people can have severe courses or die, but speaking of "a lot" distorts the picture in my eyes.

Actually, most young people, especially those with no chronic illnesses, end up just fine (for example, 10 people of 25k who died in Italy were younger than 30). It's not that there's 0% fatality rate for them, but Aliona wasn't completely wrong in her interview. There is a reason why you see 'a lot' of news about teenagers dying but not about people in nursery homes. It's actually pretty insane how disproportionately elders are affected by the virus. That's also why Japan, one of the oldest countries in the world, has to take serious precautions. And the reason why Medvedeva got so much controversy for her IG posts is that the prefecture she moved to from Tokyo is comprised of 30% elders - the virus would be devastating there, so the authorities recommended not going there from other cities.

Hmm, maybe it's my ballet background but I practiced triples on the floor in the 'loop' position.... Toeloops are so prerotated on the floor, I'm trying to think how to do a salchow on the floor without it turning into an Axel. I also would do pretend "flip" triples on the floor too. But no, this is not ideal. Nothing comes close to actually practicing on the ice.

" Many different Aces "

Three programs, three very different skaters, and three alternative music choices in completely contrasting styles. I apologise in advance for any harshness, but those who write about "Khrustalniy's cookie cutter skaters" simply have not watched their skating runs. Well, or as they say "Judging the book by its cover" doesn't give you any insight into its actual content.

Everyone keeps talking about controversy?
From where?
Twitter users? any fool and their brother can get a hashtag trending, and any hack can write an "article" about it on a website like it's news.

When we have an official skating source weigh in, or a Japanese official weigh in, that's proof and that's news.

Until we have that, I see no issues and no problems and nothing to apologize for, myself, and that's my opinion. Which is as valid as anyone else's:)

Well, I remember quite recent "controversy" concerning Sasha. She (or rather her family), from the strinct sense of the word, didn't break any law, because during time they flew to Egypt it was still allowed. Though we've heard many things about how immoral, how short-sighted, how blahblah this was. And no meritorious member rushed on her defence. Also, no one of her fans said on the account of some other fans what was said on the account of the fans of particular skater in this case.

Though, I think this is enough. Some fans of figure skating don't enjoy quads, I don't enjoy such affairs, no matter which skater is in.

I’ve seen athletes do salchows and toes when warming up on the floor, but you’re right, they look very much like axels.
